Do you think there are any places in the world that could become like Panem?
Are any places close to this post-apocalyptic world, filled with corruption?

I can’t see the future government(s) of North America having teenagers go on live TV and fight each other to the death, but some aspects of the government of Panem do seem realistic. Like possibly the government getting so powerful, that they don’t really help all parts of the country equally. Then some parts would be as poor as District 12, but others would be more like Districts 1 and 2. I think it would also be possible that they would invent all this new technology and keep it for the Capitol. Like the way they healed Katniss’ ear in The Hunger Games, or the force fields around the arena in Catching Fire.

It could happen, but I doubt it. Although, if something similar happened, I would imagine that it would be much further. I believe that America fell after they lost all natural resources, or something along those lines, and they formed Panem out of that. We’re trying to do a lot of things that will change the way the future looks for us. And I must agree, it is quite possible that the government would become too powerful. My only question is, what happens to the other parts of the world?

i think that it is possible, but not so extreme. i don’t think (like sean said) that the government is going to force teenagers to kill one another on live tv, but i think that the U.S. government will take over. but who knows…?

I agree with Sean. I don’t think our government is so corrupt that they would start forcing teenagers to fight to the death, especially not on live TV, but it is the reasoning behind The Capitol’s decision that is very realistic. We have a very power hungry government here, in the U.S. They don’t like it when their plans get messed with. I mean, look at Glenn Beck. He is questioning many things the government is doing. And, just because he is expressing his opinion on matters he thinks are wrong the government are calling him crazy and a liar. I definitely think that if our whole nation tried to rebel, and failed, the government would find some kind of consequence for us. Because the want power, simple as that.

Welll i don’t know about the government not starting the hunger games. If you’ve ever seen the episode of Dr.Who where they go 5000 years into the future, everyone’s killing each other for entertainment. if two separate writers can think of this, who else has? And if they have, and voice the idea it could trickle through the generations and become reality after an apocolipse e.g Yellowstone park erupting and then be put into place. So it’s not as unrealistic as we may think. What if these to pieces of literature are the catalyists for a warped twisted phyco of the future to start the actual hunger games? Scary huh?

I don’t believe that our world could become as corrupted as it is in the Hunger Games. I’m sure that even if things got that bad where reality TV morphed into people watching children killing each other for entertainment and the government being over controling, someone would do SOMETHING. It seems like in the Hunger Games the underpriveledged citizens of the districts made that one uprising against the capital and then just gave up when they failed. In the world we live in, no one ever seems to truly give up when they fight for their freedom and equality. Most people in our world are too independent to just let the government walk all over them without a fight. Someone like Katniss would always rise up to lead a rebellion and put an end to it.

If our government(s) create a Hunger Games, or something of the like, then they would’ve really gone insane, wouldn’t they? If they did do something of the sort, I’m sure, like in the Hunger Games, someone, or a group of people, would start a rebellion. The idea of people having to send their children to fight to the death is just really bizarre. Maybe if they did start a Hunger Games way off in the future, they would raise the age minumim to 18. You would have to be an adult. Something that I would like to have, if you do get a Hunger Games, is you can choose to enter in your name. But, really, I don’t think that anyone would enter, do you? So, the idea is just plain creepy. I don’t think the government would do that.

I certainly hope not. That’s all I can really sa right now, because my brain is on a low frequency. But, I always wonder why the other countries don’t interfere with the Hunger Games. It’s scary because what if Panem is the most humane out of them all.

As far as the implementation of the Hunger Games goes, what needs to be considered is not if it could happen, but how it already has happened. Ancient Romans held their gladiator games, which were meant to entertain audiences. Collins took her inspiration directly from history and applied to a new a new media.

i think that it could totally happen. i mean, the government is weak. so weak, anyone could attack us at any moment. or some americans are becoming desperate. a dictator could easily convince people to do things.

I agree with everyone else, that the goverment probably wouldn’t become that corrupt. But what I see in the world’s future is how our interets will change. Already, music and television are a lot different than it was “in the old days”. Now, we hear about death, sex, drugs, etc. daily and slowly we are becoming more immune to it. It sort of ties in with one of the past disscussions of what the hunger games tells us about reality television. What does it REALLY take to entertain us? What WILL it take to entertain us in the future, after wars, natural disasters, and destruction? Our entertainment will be COMPLETELY different in the future. And we can see it even today as technology advances and gaming becomes more and more violent.

But, I do hope it doesn’t end up that way… killing people for pleasue… that would kinda suck.

Panem was created from the ruins of North America, I think we could’ve possibly been leaning towards this, but since we’ve realized, we’ve all started going green, and we’ve been making a big difference. I think if we continue with what we’re doing we might be able to save our earth. But, the rate of violence and crime is rising every day. Every time I turn on the news I see another horrible story of a shooting, or a stabbing or a serial killer. It’s horrible. If the crime rate continues to grow we might just tear our nation apart, which could cause something like Panem to happen. I think we should make everybody read The Hunger Games, so when they feel compelled to kill someone, or do something horrible, they can think about Panem and what our nation of America could become.

(Reply to mrspeetamellarkx3)
I was watching the news about a man in prison when the news woman said he “died of natural causes”. “Natural causes?! What’s that supposed to mea- oh yeah! I forgot you could die that way!” I was so used to hearing about peopled being murdered, drugged, or dieing of cancer I actually forgot you could die normally! How sad is that! Scientist that study genetics say that guys are born with an x and y chromosome, but the guys who murder people usually have an extra y chromosome… Weird huh? But what about girls that are agressive? Anyways, Panem is SO technology advanced, it would have to be in the next 4,000 years. The whole “futuristic countries” deal reminds me of The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. It is an amazing book, but I won’t give much away. Basicly, America is a 3rd world country, Mexico is a giant New York, there is a corrupt country between the two, and their technolgy is somewhat advanced. It isn’t as good as The Hunger Games (or as dramatic), but it will probably give you a new view on books.

With the power one can generate nowadays through things like usage of language, persuasion, and social media even the minor things can make a difference and change the minds of the people. Though I don’t see something like this happening in America any time soon, I can see how it /could/ happen. You see examples of governmental influence in works like George Orwell’s 1984. Ultimately, I’m sure it’s easy to influence the minds of a people if they threaten them with… well, death. Though I don’t see anything as cruel or violent being able to happen here, I do believe we can have similar situations in which the government threatens our freedom, so to speak. However, at this point, I know /we/ don’t have to worry about that. Seems like everything’s headed in a good direction, and ultimately, the government is looking out for the people of America as a whole. (Though, of course, there’s always minor inevitable corruption.)

I think the world could end up like this in the end. The fact that someone is in control but taking advantage of it could definately happen. I don’t know if we would ever have anything like the hunger games though. However we hear about death so much these days I think something might happen. I think Suzanne Collins did a really good job of thinking of a future world.

this might be because the book is set in america and i live in america, but i don’t think that would happen in the future. I don’t think we would blow up a part of our country because we didn’t like it. We’ have had civil wars, but we never would bomb ourselves, if you think that way the government had been messed up before the hunger games started. When Panem blew up district 13 that started the hunger games, so if our government doesn’t bomb ourselves( which we won’t) then America won’t be that messed up as Panem is in the Hunger games

Well, I think that this actually could be something that could happen. After all, they say that the rebellion ended horribly because the people didn’t have enough power. And then that fear the spread down the generations from what they saw kept the people from even thinking of rebellion. And the Hunger Games were just a way to ensure that the people were kept in fear, and that anyone at any time, no matter how young or old, was essentially in the palm of the Capitol’s hands.

Yes, it seems possible. The Hunger Games, a book about the far future where corruption and entertainment keep humans from being humane for greedy purposes that would benefit the majority. Only question i would ask is what type of society would exist-capitalism or communism? Both seem to have bad endings for the far future.

by KelseyDN on February 05 - 11:35 am

I definitely think it could happen. I know that we can’t see that now since we see the world we live in as the current. But as it was said earlier, the world is capable considering our own history. Why couldn’t we go back? The Roman Empire was extremely profitable but they tortured and killed the citizens who went against it. Imagine what would happen if the world became more violent than it is now, more animalistic. The Olympic games wouldn’t be about coming together as a world, it would be about proving who’s strongest. (Isn’t that kind of what it is now anyhow?) That is if the world went into war if we’d even have any sort of Olympic Games.

Ultimately, if the world went into a world war, and someone could bring America back from the ruins, even if it was in a dictatorship type of government, the people would follow and Panem could be possible.

by Katie on February 05 - 3:15 pm

I think this is a scarily realistic future. Many countries are already a less-drastic version f what Panem is today. Who’s to say that an apocalyptic event couldn’t occur that would through the world in turmoil. People would need stability, and a Panem-like set up would, in theory, offer that to them.

This future, unfortunately, is a very realistic portrayal of a dystopia. And remember, Panem is set in the not-so-distant future. Panem could easily be the future of North America in as little as about 300 years.

Yes. I can imagine the world being like that in away. With the corruption right now in AMerica, Panem seems like it is getting closer and closer. In some ways though, It doesnt seem like it. I mean, Suzanne Collins is an amazing writer. She does make Panem seem real. With all of the cruel, harmful people and governmet, I can’t see the world being like that anytime soon. There are still some questions hanging in the air though. Like, What happens to the rest of the world? Does it collide into a Pangea 2 again, leaving thousands of miles deserted? Or what? What happens to the world’s population? Do the people all cram into the districts or just die due to the wars and natural diasters that North America underwent? I don’t know. :)

It could happen… A few hundred years ago it toally could of happened. No one coudl get away with somthing like that at the moment. You know how common sense has grown. It sounds like something in a Roman colesem. Imagine if our world took a total turn backwards into total insanity. Everyone in seam are living in poverty and living in a olden day fashion. There could be a dictator of a politician like President Snow.

The thing about the hunger games actually being real is kind of hard to believe, because the government wouldn’t be like that, throwing teens into a fit-to-the-death thing, but again, the fact that America might rise from ashes might be…sorta realistic…and the fact that it is split up is probably 98.9% true because the land might spread and break apart.

Here is my predictions for the future
1. We will have another fifty yeasrs of how we are now: A democracy, the United States, yada yada yada.
2. Mt. Saint Helens will erupt massively, destroying most of Washington (Except where JD lives. I’m sorry, but I have no sympathy for Forks, WA) and sending ash spewing all over the west coast and as far as Texas and Ohio, blocking out the sun. About half the population there will die of suffacation, mudslides, hunger and thirst (Except hosts of Mockingjay, who will hopefully still try to make a podcast).
3. About a year later, with the west coast still in ruins, a MASSIVE hurricane will wipe out the gulf of mexico (Islands, Mexico and States included) and travel up the east coast all the way up to Maine (Poor old me, I live in Virginia…) and cover most of the once was the east coast and gulf states with water.
4. Six months after that, with America in full crisis mode and with a lot new ocean area, a series of giant tornados will ravage all of the U.S, leaving about only 50,000,000 people left.
4(1/2). All the while the rest of the world is experiencing similer disasters. All ocean touching countries are gone.
5. Finally, two weaks after the tornadoes, a giant earthquake will destroy most of the Earth and kill about half of the remaining people alive.
American Population: 25 million, about the population of Virginia.
6. We will have 25 years of no electricity, no outside connection, and no Government.
7. A group of individuals will establish themselves leaders and will take control of North America, rebuild everything, and make the U.S a totalitarian government and put us into 13 districts. This will take about 56 years.
And you know the rest.
So, in simpilist answer, yes, The Hunger Games is our future. Drat.

I disagree. I think that our government is sane enough right now to not decide to send in teenagers to kill each other. But, we aren’t talking about right now, in the present, are we? So, maybe in the very far future, possibly. I just don’t think the government would go that far, unless they’ve gone crazy and insane. So, I don’t think it will happen. Here’s my statistics.

75%: No, they won’t have a Hunger Games
25%: Yes, they will, or they’re seriously thinking about it.
