The veteran screenwriter Billy Ray has been doing a draft/polish of the script that was initially written by Collins herself.
Ray has a number of action movies under his belt, including “Flightplan” and “State of Play” (as well as “Breach” and “Shattered Glass,” both of which also saw him sitting behind the camera). But perhaps most notable is that the writer-director has been chosen as the man to adapt “24″ for the big screen. (His pitch, which has Jack Bauer running around Europe, Jason Bourne-style, was favored by Fox executives.) There’s probably not a lot of overlap between the globetrotting battle to fight violent terrorists and fighting to survive in the futuristic nation of Panem, though, now that we think of it, there are looser comparisons out there. (It’s also worth noting that “Hunger Games” comes from Scholastic, the same publisher as the Harry Potter franchise.)
Fans have been wondering who’ll pay the young heroine in “Hunger Games” — Chloe Moretz, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan are among the fan favorites, as far as we can tell — but first the project needs to find a director. That could happen soon; Ray’s script is about to come into producers, if it hasn’t quietly been slipped to them already. And with that will commence the next step in the battle to create the next “Twilight,” a competition as fierce as anything in “Hunger Games” itself.

This is awesome! This made my day! I mean any actress can play Katniss if the actress is very talented but hopefully its someone that has not been discovered in the Hollywood showbiz. There is always Movie magic that can make someone look a certain character but its cool if they had someone with the natural looks that fit the character Katniss!
I like Billy Ray writing and he is perfect for the screenwriter of this movie! I can’t wait tilll they announce the director! This is so exciting!

Dakota Fanning is a fan favorite as far as they can tell? They can’t tell too far now can they?
But, if by some weird instance she is going to be Katniss, give her a tan and dye her hair and she’ll be fine. At least she can actually… y’know… act (which is more than I can say for some actual fan favorites). No need to worry though, my guess is casting mentions are pretty much all conjecture at this point.
Anyway, this Billy Ray guy seems competent enough. I trust him with this wonderful book.
The next Twilight? *sigh* I’m not even going to go into Twilight/HP/HG stuff. They are all good books. I just haven’t ever gotten around to reading a certain series…

Chloe Moretz, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan?
None of these actresses look the part for Katniss. I think they got Prims and Katniss’ ages mixed up. Not only that but a majority of the HG fans can’t quite understand Katniss is olive skinned, and most of the suggestions from fans are white actress’.
As for the whole Twilight deal HG and Twilight shouldn’t be compared at all. HG and Twilight are both extremely different. In fact people should stop comparing things to Twilight at all period.

I DON’T think the hair and eye color are a big deal. Wigs aren’t that expensive and there aren’t going to be too many actresses out there with gray eyes!
Also, if they can make people pale white for vampire movies, I’m sure they can take care of a white actress’s skin color. The casting should be based on the ability of the actor to represent the character, movie magic can take care of the rest! I do hope they cast somebody totally unique for Katniss.
As far as the Twilight thing goes, the stories are entirely different. In my opinion, the Hunger Games series has the potential to surpass Twilight in popularity. (I am a fan of both)

So excited that things are moving forward! As to actresses, if anyone from Twilight is going to be involved in Hunger Games I’m hoping it’s Jodelle Ferland. I know she has read the books and absolutely loves them.

I also agree that book series/movie need to stop being compared. At first it was comparing HP and Twilight now it’s comparing the next thing to both of them. Nothing will ever be the next Harry Potter, nor will anything ever be the next Twilight, or the next Hunger Games, these series are all unique and cannot be compared with anything else out there.

THANK YOU, D!!!! Your message is perfect…literally spot on perfect! I have heard so many people suggest actresses that do not have a NATURAL olive-skin tone……I understand that those people are worried about talent and that they can use tons of movie magic on them….BUT I think it is possible that somewhere in this country, there is a OLIVE-TONED and AMAZINGLY TALENTED ACTRESS out there! Let’s give those girls a chance!!! When it comes to vampires in Twilight, if the character has to have fair white skin…they don’t go and cast a olive-skin toned male and put movie magic on him to give him a lighter tone!

And yes, twilight and hunger games ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE DIFFERENT! Twilight is first and foremost a love story and the Hunger Games is dystopic adventure story.

I have never ever heard of any of those actresses being optioned by fans. I think the majority of fans are lobbying for an unknown actor. I agree that the actress should have a naturally olive skin tone. If her hair is more brown as opposed to black or if her eyes aren’t gray those things are easily fixable. But I think they should try to find a girl with olive skin. Plus with so many kids in the cast I think HG will be good opportunity to showcase talented actors of widely varying ethnicity

Glad to see news on the screenplay, but it looks as if the LA Times didn’t do any fan research. They just picked the 3 most well-known teenage girl actresses. Who all, ironically, are the opposite of what the heroine looks like.

So, happy about the update, but not happy if this is any indication of how casting will go.

Saoirse Ronan is the perfect choice!!!! I think she did amazing in The City Of Ember- which wa also a book, and she just fits the part- Dakota has played roles in twilight and ALOT of other movies- and that other chick is to young and she could be prim.

Wow, the three actresses they mentioned as fan favorites are three of many actresses that I could never see as being able to pull off Katniss. I’m not saying that they’re bad at acting, but I just don’t see Katniss in any of them. So maybe they could get picked up as some of the other tributes or people from the capital, or even people from the other districts that Katniss meets along the way. I’m extremely excited about the progress they’re making with the movie though, and of course, I can’t wait for Mockingjay.

Im so excited that the movie has started to come together now. I hope that someone just didnt put enough research into the so called “fan favourites” listed and that when choosing a cast they will pick an actor that actually suits the role, someone with an edge. The ones listed are probably great actors but they have no physical similarities to how Katniss is described and just don’t seem like they would fit into the fierce part.

UHH… WOW There is some.. uhh.. feelings in this comment/discussion thingy.
Anyways, this is great! We’re finally getting news about the Hunger Games movie!

Okay I’m going into the directors first. YAY! We’re finally going to get our director! Crossed fingers that it’s a good one. Hehe.

Secondly, they talk about how the Twilight, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games thing. First of all.. I’m sorry but I think Harry Potter is a LEGEND. Lol Sorry.. But I’m seriously worried about how they’re giving us hints about how this is the next Twilight. And I DONT want that. I mean I love the Twilight Saga, REALLY but I want this Movie to make a name for themselves not be the next anything but I want this movie to have a next rather than being the next. Get what I mean?

And Lastly they talk about some of the “fan” favorites for Katniss. I’m not really going to go in to this because there are alot of people that have already commented about this and go see those comments if you want an in-depth actor thing. But I’m not a fan of the actors they have on here. Chloe Moretz is adorable and too young to play Katniss, she should be Prim not Katniss. SHE’S 13 for PEETA’S SAKE.
And the other two (Dakotan Fanning and Saoirse Ronan) just don’t have that Katniss look in them.

So there! You have my oppinion. Can’t wait ’till they announce the directors, better yet the ACTORS. YAY.
BTW I’m still Kaya for Katniss and JD for Peeta.

She’s not a good actress, she has no business playing the role of someone she doesn’t fit into at all, no matter how much makeup and stuff they put on her, she will never be Katniss.

When you make a movie, you’re making it for the viewers, correct? So why don’t they take “fan favorites” from the actual FANS???

NO! Those 3 girls don’t look anything like Katniss. MAYBE if they gave them colored contacts, a wig, and changed their skin tone, then yes. It should be someone not well known yet, in my opinion. and they CANNOT compare this to Twilight. EVER. Twilight is not NEARLY as good as the Hunger games, and it never will be! Also, for the smaller parts like Foxface and Rue, I think they should have open casting auditions. You never know what talent you can find, plus a lot of the smaller parts don’t have any speaking roles. So you can’t go wrong, you just have to find a person who looks like a character! Plus it would be a lot cheaper to hire people from open auditions than experienced actors and actresses for parts that they’re not even going to speak in. (this doesn’t necassarily apply to Rue since she speaks)

I sure hope none of the girls mentioned for Katniss get the role. I’ve seen movies with all 3 of them and think they’re great actresses (especially Dakota Fanning) but don’t imagine them as Katniss.
I’m happy we got some movie news though, I can’t wait! I hope they don’t mess up casting. I’m a huge Twilight fan and even though I’ve already gotten over it, think some of the casting was wayyy off! so I hope this doesn’t happen to The Hunger Games. Hopefully it’ll be like the cast in the Harry Potter franchise which to me was brilliant.

I hope they really pay attention to detail! I don’t want the movie to be like Twilight or to be over advertised and stuff. It’s so annoying. I only hate Twilight now because of all the over- mechandising crap and hype. If that ever happens to the movie, the books will lose its authenticity. The Hunger Games has so much more depth and realism. I get REALLY pissed off when I see it being compared to Twilight. The Hunger Games owns.

I know he’s more in Catching Fire, But I think he’d be a great President Snow.

dakota fanning as katniss???? NO Way! i love dakota fanning and all but shes supposed to have an olive skin-tone and dark hair and i personally think she would be the wrong choice.

Hm. I think the lead, Katniss, should be totally unknown, I wouldn’t want anyone associating her actress with another character as they watch the movie. I think Nina Dobrev is too friendly looking. Katniss is a tough girl, shes the man of the house in book 1.

I agree with Gaspard Ulliel for Gale though!!! I think Lucas Till has too much of an outgoing aire about him. Peeta is very weak in book 1.

I love Christian Siriano as Cinna, but Johnny Depp would do well too in that character. Tom Hanks is too nice for president snow. I’m thinking lots of less well known actors/actresses. Great suggestions so far though!

I think I’d puke if Dakota Fanning ruined another great role. First Jane, now Katniss? Whoever runs this website
a) needs to do more research. the fan favorites are NOT any of the three baby-looking tweens listed above.
b) needs to read the book again. “olive skin and dark hair”. not white skin and blonde hair.
I swear, the only thing that could ruin this movie would be the actors – every one listed is way too well-known and won’t do a good job.

i completley disagree with the actress choices. i mean really-dakota fanning?? they already ruined twilight with tht joke of an actress Kristen Stewart who dosen’t kno how to act if it was sniffed up her nose, now they have to go and do the same thing with the Hunger Games?? i don’t think so!

sry for the harshness but i just feel tht a perfectly good book should not be destroyed…o and i totally agree with SINGING CANARY’S comment-they should definetly find someone who isn’t as familiar to the public. a new face and one who has some talent!! i kno thts a lot to ask but out of a trillon people in this world i think they can find someone!!

I think that Kaya Scoldelario would be good for Katniss, Hugh Dancy as Cinna, Johny Depp as the interview guy, Alex Pettyfer as Peeta, for Haymitch (don’t laugh at me) Jack Black, and for Effie we could do Kristen Chenoweth. Dakota Fanning would DEFINITELY NOT be good for Katniss. Oh, and Drew Roy for Gale, LETS GOT TEAM PEETA ALL THE WAY!!!!

I think Dakota Fanning is a great actress and all, but I don’t think she would be a good role for Katniss. Maybe someone that looked a little like they described in the book? I hope they can find someone that

First of all, I have seen a BUTTLOAD of movies and never even heard of Chloe Moretz. A quick google search shows me that she’s not even anywhere near the right age for Katniss and she doesn’t look anything like her either.

Second, Dakota Fanning is very talented and capable and I think she could do well as Katniss but once again, she is the complete opposite in the look department for the role.

Last, Saoirse Ronan, who I think of the three here would be the BEST choice however, once again, she does not have olive skin, brown hair, and brown eyes.

I can REALLY picture Shailene Woodley as Katniss because she looks the part first of all, is the perfect age, and she’s extremely talented and versatile.

I will be very, VERY upset if they get this movie wrong by picking a stupid director or casting the wrong actors. They are already comparing The Hunger Games to Twilight which means the movie might already be doomed seeing as the Twilight movies were slapped together without much thought so as to make as much money as possible before the Twilight fever fad was replaced by something else. They better take great care to make this movie right. They should take hints from other book-to-movie transitions that have gone well in the past. Take for example Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Outsiders.

@Girl on Fire: Nina Dobrev certainly looks like a grown-up Katniss doesn’t she? But Nina Dobrey is a few years too late to play Katniss. She’s too old to pull off a 16-year-old girl. Lucas Till yeah, I can see him as Peeta lookswise, but can he act? Do you know who I think would make a GREAT Peeta? Jeremy Sumpter. But he might be too old as well. *Sigh* I HATE when they cast a 25 year old man to play a 16-year-old boy’s part. Sumpter is 20 so that might be out of the question. Johnny Depp would make an AMAZING Haymitch! Prim should be played by Elle Fanning. Kevin Zegers would make a great Gale if he weren’t so old. Gaspard Ulliel? Ew no!!! And he is the same age as Kevin Zegers. I almost think it would be best to just find a whole bunch of extremely talented unknowns like the did for Chronicles of Narnia.

I swear I just about cried. When I read that they said DAKOTA FANNING was a fan favourite, I wanted to kill myself. I don`t want anyone from stupid Twilight to be in the Hunger Games. It feels good to know other people agree! Saoirse Ronan, she did good in the City of Ember, but I think there should be someone new. A good actress who at least resembles Katniss-wether she has dark brown hair,tan skin, or brown eyes instead of black hair, olive skin, and grey eyes. The girl needs spunk though, too. I swear to god if Miley Cyris, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato or anyone of those stupid Disney Stars or w.e are picked, I will sue. People already ruined Twilight (whom I was a BIG fan until the movie came out) with Kristen Stewer and Robert Pattinson (they’re good actos, but they just don’t cut it) who didn’t even read the series or care about the fans. I’m hopeing that they’ll pick somene geniune, who looks like Katniss and has the guts like Katniss. Don’t screw up another good series. Well, this series is way, way, waaayyy better than Twilight…. but still- look how much they ruined that.

I don’t care if they play on you’re favorite show (I love pretty little liars:D) If you’ve already read Mockingjay, Peeta says to her: You’re not that pretty. Sooo, I want this girl to be ‘ruggid’ looking. Not big-eyed and gorgeous like Lucy, and god-forbid Shaileene.. no… ew… god please…. I’m praying and hoping that this movie will not make me want to rip up the book.
