Discussion Wednesday: Does Madge Undersee Have a Secret?
Posted by Kimmy
Categories: Discussion Wednesday

“Madge walks straight to me. She is not weepy or evasive, instead there is an urgency to her tone that suprises me. “They let you wear one thing from your district in the arena. One thing to remind you of home. Will you wear this?” She holds out the circular gold pin that was on her dress earlier. I hadn’t paid much attention to it before, but now I see it’s a small bird in flight. “Your pin?” I say. Wearing a token from my district is the last thing on my mind. “Here I’ll put it on your dress all right?” Madge doesn’t wait for an answer she just leans in and fixes th ebird to my dress. “Promise you’ll wear it into the arena, Katniss?” she asks. “Promise?”

Does Madge Undersee have a secret motive for giving Katniss the pin?

I think she does… or maybe she is being told to act like this… no idea really :S

I think Madge was “sent” to contact Katniss and the pin might show the others in the rebellion that she met with Katniss. I feel bad for Katniss being the messenger without her consent, but at the same time its pretty ingenious. And Haymitch was right to not let Katniss be the “planner” :)

I believe that Madge-or her father-or both- are a part of/aware of the rebellion. Sending Katniss in with the pin may have been a few things
1) The Mockingjay was already a symbol amoungst the rebels and the wanted katniss to wear it to show other watching districts that District 12 is a part of the rebellion, too.
2) It was a set up. The picking of Prim so that Katniss would volunteer, the pin, even the explotion that “killed” her father (I strongly believe it was a set up). All of this to get Katniss in on the rebellion because she’s strong and would make a good mascot :-D
3) Madge’s father told her to give it to Katniss because he’s a part of the rebellion, stressing the urgency but not the reason, hence her hurried words.

I could be just too hungry for conspiracy, but a girl can dream, eh?

I think Madge’s secret is two-fold… one, being the daughter of the mayor (who is well aware of the tensions in other districts, I would assume), she likely knows that *something* is going on in the other districts. She also probably knew of Katniss’ more rebellious tendencies (going over the fence to hunt, etc.), and knew she might be the one to ignite the spark that would blow the rebellion right open.

Also, she knows her aunt was in the arena with Haymitch. Since Katniss is probably the person closest to her to go into the arena since her aunt died in the games, that could also be another reason she’s so intent on getting the pin to Katniss.

I think Madge’s family is definately part of the rebellion, or if they are not part of it they favor it (thats if they are still alive) I bet they are though cause I think Gale is gonna hook up with Madge but anyway, Katniss’s mother makes a reference in catching Fire she says to Haymitch “Its starting again” and it was Haymitch who was in there with madge’s aunt Maysilee who was the actual owner of the pin. So I think there is something there.

Madge defiantely seems like she knows the other districts are rebelling though, probably from the private announcements her father gets, and that was the urgency in her words.

On one hand, it could’ve been Madge just giving Katniss the pin because Madge thought she had a good chance of surviving the games, that being the reason why she would give her a special token. Also, they are friends, right? She might have just given it to her to show she cares about Katniss. But then again, when looking at what’s going on more closely, it might’ve been that she was told to give her the pin as a sign for the rebellion to come to the people of the districts watchinig the games. It’s not very definiate what was going on, only that Madge thought it urgent that Katniss wear the pin as a token. You can’t really know what the motive was for Madge giving the pin away unless the book were to outright tell you, which it might in Mockingjay. Marge giving Katniss the pin might have been part of the rebellion, it might not have been.

I think, maybe, Madge knew what the bird meant, but it didn’t occur to her what the symbol could become. Like, she gave it as encouragement, because the bird is like courage and stuff.

What if they killed Maysilee because she had the pin?? What if the mockingjay has been a symbol of the current rebellion for longer than they thought? And I think the gamemakers are in on it too, because she didn’t die until she left Haymitch, which might mean something…. Maybe the winning of the two tributes of district 12 was a signal for the other districts to take action. Because it can cause enough of a riot to cover the true reason of rebellion. The mockingjay pin was only ever in the arena whenever there was a promising chance of two victors. I believe that Maysilee and Haymitch, in a field of 48, would have both been victorious if they had stuck together……. but that’s just a really long theory…

Ironically enough, I was just talking to someone about this yesterday.

Yes, Madge definitely has a secret.

As mayor’s daughter, she has access to things that no one else in the District does. She easily could catch the news on her television, overhear her father’s conversations, and even possibly has been out of District 12. It wouldn’t surprise me if we find out Madge is one of the leading rebels in the uprising. She’s got the perfect cover – shy, sweet, innocent little girl. Who hopefully can kick some Capitol a**.

I’m sure Madge knows something. Knowing what we now know about Haymitch, I would say the pin was sent in as a signal to the other districts that it was “time” for the rebellion. Madge may or may not have known all the details of the situation, but I believe someone, possible Haymitch told her to give the pin to Katniss.

I also think that Prim’s name was chosen on purpose, seriously out of all those slips in there a person with a one in a gazillion chance gets picked? Not likely. I wouldn’t doubt that it was rigged because they knew that Katniss would volunteer and with her strength, determination and courage who better to send in. I also think that Peeta’s name was not selected at random either, I believe he was sent in to be the voicepiece, while Katniss was sent in to be the symbol of the rebellion.

Madge may or may not know all of this, but I feel strongly she knows more than she let’s on. I’m starting to wonder if Gale does too.

I think there’s a whole thing going on with the mayor’s family. The mayor bought strawberries from Katniss and Gale so of course he isnt completely devoted to the Capitol. I don’t think he even LIKES the captitol. And in CF didnt it say that the mayor’s tv told Kat about the rebellions in the districts? I think madge’s mom gave her the pin, and her dad told her about the rebellion, and the connection. Then, madge gave it to Kat to help spark the rebellion. I mean, it says she was urgent, and I think thats because she NEEDED Katniss to take the pin.

Yes, she hiding something. I think she was sent to Katniss by some group of underground rebels (possibly Katniss’s father? and probably the mayor too) and may not have been told the whole entire story behind that rebellion but was told that she had to help them by passing on the pin to Katniss.

She and her dad where probably part of that secret organization mentioned at the end of CF. She and her dad knew Katniss’s father was still alive (and her father was probably part of the rebellion plan to thus they knew she probably inhereted his skill). So they took advantage of that and gave her the potential to be the figurehead of the rebellion while she was oblvious to it. This theorie is a bit far fetched so it could be less or more of that. Also like a lot of people who are into the Gale v.s Peeta thing are saying if Gale lives through the rebellion he’ll probably end up with madge (it sorta hinted that at the beginning of the hunger games when they drop off the strawberries and in CF when Katniss realizes there might be something going on with Gale and madge when she drops off the medicine after Gale’s whipping).

I agree. I think all authority figure must know about District 13 so the mayor probably knew about District 13 and Madge could have found out about it… maybe everyone knew there was going to be an uprising before the Games even started, Katniss was just the key they needed. But Madge also could have given Katniss the pin simply because of their mother’s and the history they had with Madge’s aunt.

Right now (SPOILERS FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN’T READ CF!!! (which, why haven’t you?)) we don’t even know if Madge is alive. But if she is, I do think she’s up to something. If she knew the mockingjay was the symbol of the rebellion, she played dumb with Katniss because they were talking about the mockingjay & she said, “But it’s just a songbird, right?”

And I hate how people stick Gale with Madge because they want Peeta and Katniss to be together. I doubt Gale would go with anyone else besides Katniss. Let’s just stick Peeta with Johanna while we’re at it! >:(

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@Bee- That is a good point. Madge might have just given her the pin because, heck, Katniss is her friend and both Madge’s aunt/Katniss were in the Games. Maybe even Mrs. Everdeen gave Maysilee the mockingjay pin to begin with.

Who knows?

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

The pin was Maysilee’s here aunt..I don’t think madge truly forsaw all of this with the pin but being the mayor’s daughter if Undersee was part of the underground group she would have a guarenteed seat to the ship. I think she’s alive. Secret..perhaps?

Doubt its anything for the rebellion. It didn’t even really start until Catching Fire, and before she pulled the act with the berries, I doubt if a rebellion was starting, they felt a sixtenn year old girl ws essential to the rebellion effort….well, until at least after she completed the first Hunger Games and defied the Capital with the berries.

Wow, i never thought of that. There IS an certian urgency in her motives. I think maybe it was always the symbol of the undercover group trying to over throw the captial; the one Pluatch Heavensbee is a part of.

It would make sense to have the mocking jay as a symbol, because the Jabber Jay’s were the only thing that the captial had no control over

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

by Lily in July 28 - 2:42 pm

Yeah, I don’t think she had an alt motive… Katniss was her friend, and the pin was Madge’s aunt’s (who was in the Hunger Games). Katniss even brings up that it’s funny to have that pin, since of the jabberjays, and Madge doesn’t get it.
Though I agree that the mayor is probably keeping up with if not helping the rebellion.
And I don’t think that it was planned to have the pin be the mascot, it just happened that way.

Well, it all goes with the idea that Katniss going into the arena was planned. If that is correct, and the whole idea of Katnniss winning because of a conspiracy theorye is also correct, then i think that the mayor and, more importantly, his wife are involved and Madge was told to give Katniss the the pin. I think it’s all about the fact Madge’s mother’s sister was in the games, and that Haymitch started getting the undercover rebellion for her. Madge’s mother was of course involved. Madge then was told to give the pin to Katniss for the rebellion.

This is just ideas, of course! I’ll guess we’ll just have to see in Mockingjay!

i don’t think Madge had some secret motive. keep in mind the rebellion wasn’t started until katniss pulled out the berries in the arena. if you think about it, it wouldn’t be possible for the rebellion to have started before that. if there had been a rebelion before that, wouldn’t katniss or gale have found out about it, considering that they were both known law breakers and people would have known to tell them about it? i just don’t think there was any rebellion before the berries. plus, think about how angry president snow was at katniss for the berry act and starting the rebellion. there is no way it could have started before that.

by Abby in July 28 - 4:57 pm

I once read a fanfiction that was about Madge’s motives in giving the pin to Katniss.

Mrs. Undersee and Maysilee were probably twins. Twins are known to have pyshcic connections. Maysilee died, and now Mrs. Undersee has horrible headaches. In the story I read, Madge gave the pin to Katniss because she knew about how much her mother missed Maysilee. Maysilee (at least in the story) wore the pin into the arena, and Madge thought that if her mother saw Katniss wearing it, she might think that her sister was still alive and she might be happier for a little while.

It’s kind of a sketchy theory, but I think that it’s just as likely than Madge secretly forcing Katniss into leading the rebellion. I don’t think that she meant anything when she gave Katniss the pin; maybe she just wanted to do something for her friend before Katniss went to die.

The only secret that I think Madge has is that she’s secretly in love with Gale.

I’m sure there are other people whose ideas are the same as what I think Madge’s secret is, but I’ll just say I agree with Kate. :D I think Madge was sent by the undercover group that Plutarch Heavensbee (and possibly Haymitch) was part of. That way Katniss was unintentionally showing the symbol of rebellion all across Panem while in the arena, perhaps warning/preparing others in the undercover group.

Madge for sure knows something because of her family and how she makes it seem crucial that Katniss has to wear the pin in the arena but I don’t think that she knows as much as people seem to think. I also don’t hink that the reaping was riggeed in the first book. Maybe in the sencond but not in the HG. There’s really no motive to anyone doing this.

@Abby: that seems a little to far fetched becuase Collins doesn’t really talk about Magde at all in CF and I think it would be just a big surprise if she did.

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

by Gab in July 28 - 8:19 pm

Sarah,
I’ve always thought the reaping was rigged. Especially in CF because all of the more well-known or most damaged victors were picked. Victor’s children are always picked, too, aren’t they? And then there’s little Prim, who only had one slip compared to thousands, most from tessarae. It just seems like they purposely pick 12-year-olds to upset the districts, and crippled kids, too. I’m willing to bet the Capital chooses which kids to go in. (The thing that goes against my opinion is that clueless escorts pick the tributes from a ball filled with slips with names on them. So the question, to me anyway, is: How does the Capital rig the reaping?)

by Claire in July 28 - 8:22 pm

there is definitely a secret about madge that we dont know. i think that she is part of the undercover group for the rebellion and that the mayor is too, and katniss’s father (who i dont think is dead), and haymitch, and i think cinna was a big part of it too. when kat first met him, it was his first year as a stylist, and he even said that he asked for district 12. and he helped to “spark the rebellion” with all of his fire outfits. and right before they went into the arena, he made sure that katniss had her pin, even though she totally forgot about it. he must have known something to remember the pin. and turning katniss into a mockingjay at his own expense helped with the rebellion and it showed everyone that katniss is the mockingjay.

i think that the reaping was rigged to be sure that katniss would go in. she is one of the few people in district 12 who is a strong fighter, and she is not afraid to defy the capitol, because she goes hunting in the woods every day. i thinkprim was chosen on purpose, because she was only it there once, and it is totally unlikely for her to be called, but she was. and they knew that katniss wouldnt let her little sister go into the arena and that she would take her place. this already makes katniss look like a better person than the others. and i also think peeta was chosen on purpose, because it says that when effie reaches into the reaping ball, she pulls out the first slip of paper she finds. maybe she knew about the whole thing too. and maybe someone, possibly peeta’s father, has told the rebels that he was in love with katniss, which also gave her an edge. i really dont think that it was a coincidence that the sister of the one person in the entire district that peeta loved was chosen, and then he was chosen as well. talk about unlikely.

i think neither katniss nor gale knew about it, but they had both been part of the rebellion all along

And, yeah, seriously? Gale/Madge? The only way that would be possible would be if Madge liked Gale. Gale, on the other hand, is devoted to Katniss. Doesn’t mean he’ll end up with her (which I hope he does) but he’s not going to fall for some other girl if Katniss chooses Peeta.

Yes i do think Madge has her secrets.. Someone isn’t urgent for no reason right? I do think her whole family is helping with the rebellion.. Why else would the mayor buy Gale and Katniss’ strawberries? Isn’t that considered illegal itself? As for Madge giving Katniss the pin? I don’t know if she was just giving her friend encouragment? or if she had some bigger purpose, warning the rebals maybe? But that in itself doesn’t make sense because didn’t President Snow consult Katniss about how she started the rebellion with the berries? Or is he just trying to find someone to blame and Katniss was the easy choice? I don’t know what is going on but something isn’t right about the whole situation.. I guess we will have to wait for Mockingjay!! :)
And as for the whole Gale and Madge situation… Give it a rest people! Hasn’t Gale had Katniss’ back since she was twelve? Doesn’t he know everything there is to know about Katniss? Katniss is going to end up with Gale so why don’t we just stick Peeta with Madge and get this whole thing over with?

@everyone who thinks the reaping was rigged and Gab
Okay I would understand if the Capitol was targeting the victor’s children but I would think that the Capitol wouldn’t target the 12 year olds and cripples. It would make the most sence to target the older more stronger kids. As for Prim, I know it was really unlikely that she was picked but sometimes really unlikely things happen. I just don’t think that rebel group mentioned at the end of CF rigged the reaping because how would they know Katniss would start a rebellion or do any of the things she did. Besides, if someone was targeting Katniss to help then why not Gale? In the beginning of the HG it would appear that he has a lot more hatred of the Capitol then Katniss. He might not have Katniss’ skill with a bow and arrow but he’s not exactly incompetent, is he?

Why does the majority think that Katniss’ dad is still alive? Katniss, Prim and their mother were boardering on starvation, surely if he was alive he would have sent them help through someone in District 12?

I think it was Madge’s mum Maysilee’s twin who sent Madge to Katniss with the pin. I don’t think Madge is all too cluey on what is going on, but I do think she will be a quick learner.

SARAH I agree, I don’t think the reaping was rigged, because Gale would have been called up. @SARAH I completely understand your point about Gale having more hatred for the Capitol than Katniss. But maybe they did rig the reaping and sent Katniss and Peeta into the Games? I mean Katniss has the advantage in the Games because of her skills with the bow and arrows.. Gale can set snares but what is that going to do against a boy bigger than him with a spear? And i know he is not incompetent with a bow but he is not a skilled as Katniss. I think they rigged the reaping to send Katniss ad Peeta in. Because Katniss has the advantage with the bow and arrows and Peeta has the voice and personality to move the crowd… and think about it don’t they need a strong leader if a rebellion does break out in district 12 while the tributes are still in the Games? Wouldn’t Gale be the best choice for that position? I mean he is strong, smart, has strong opinions about the Capitiol, and has enough rage to fight back if needed.

I think Madge knows a lot more than we thought she does.. I mean, perhaps the her family had long since part of the secret group Plutarch Heavensbee mentioned which wanted to overthrow the capitol.. Poor katniss, she was chosen to be the spark..

I don’t think she has a secret, she is probably just a character who had her moment on the spot and now she is done

Thank you Gab and “Unnamed” : )

Some have asked how could it have been rigged with all those slips and since Effie was pulling out the names. Well it is possible the ballot box was stuffed. I may be wrong, but they can’t keep the same slips of paper in the Reaping each year because some of the kids hit 19 and are out, others are chosen and cant’ be chosen again (because they died). Therefore each year they would have to go through and remove the uneligible. It is more likely that a listing is kept of how many slips each child has and then at some point before the reaping the names are written out on slips and then placed in for the reaping. Therefore it is entirely plausible that someone could have made sure that Prim and Peeta were chosen by making sure that the majority of the slips (or perhaps all) had their names on them. I’m doubting no one is checking the slips for stuffing. Seriously why would anyone suspect that. ;)

Definitely. Madge is definitely someone who has to know a ton of stuff that her family would assume she is ignorant of. I think, also, that the rebellion is within her range of knowledge and that either she was told to give Katniss the pin or she figured it would be a good way to help the rebellion effort get underway. Whether she knew Katniss would have a huge target on her back later on in the story, that remains to be seen. But I know she is not in ignorant bliss. She knows a ton, but has to play innocent for her father and the people of her District. Otherwise, we all know she would be in deep trouble, as well as putting her family in danger.

I’m thinking the whole family knows something. It can’t just be Madge. In book two, remember how the Mayor had to watch the news on the rebellions in the districts? What if he was formulating his plans around what the other districts are doing. The pin pretty much stated it all though. They are all up to something. I’m pretty sure Haymitch was in on it from the beginning also.

Wow I didnt even think of Madge being apart of this rebellion. I have read Catching fire twice and never even thought about that. But all I know is the answer will be in Mockingjay. CANT WAIT.

by rachel in July 29 - 11:57 am

madge could easily have had a motive for giving katniss the pin and it could have been for any reason but i like this one that i read earlyer, some one said that the pin was it the arena before when there was two good tributes that could win from district 12, and how the two district 12 tributes with the mockingjay symbol can be the sign that rebellion might be coming for the the districts and that the mockingjay has always been the symbol for rebellion so to see it was motivation for the districts. they would have known its time to rebell when the two district 12 tributes that have a mockingjay symbol win the hunger games. so i think madge was told to give katniss the pin for the rebellion but i think she would have done it anyways because of there friendship. and even though they dont say much about there friendship in the books yet, i think theres a deep bond between madge and katniss.

I agree with thisperson. The rebellion didn’t even start until Katniss held out the berries. So how was it planned? But I still think Madge knows more than she lets on. Because she’s the mayor’s daughter, I think she knows something about District 13.

Madge is definatly in on some grand plan. The question we have to ask is simple:

HOW MUCH DOES SEE KNOW?

opps, she not “see”

by Hanky in July 29 - 11:10 pm

@Blaze

haha i totally agree… it’s just what fan girls make up so that Peeta and Katniss can stay together.

But seriously, Gale won’t go with Madge, it’s got to be Katniss or no one… unless he meets someone in Mockingjay…

HEY that could happen, like when they get to District 13 (they are going there at the end of CF right?) he could meet, or have already met someone that he falls in love with

Okay probably not going to happen but that’s more likely that Gale and Madge

Sorry guys… but I don’t think so

oh yeah… and I think that Madge probably knew that it was important to give it to Katniss, but not the whole meaning of it. And maybe the Mockingjay has been a symbol of rebellion for a while and that’s why her aunt died… she was killed by the capitol so maybe it’s for her pin

Yeah… I like that idea… but we’ll see… what is it? 26 more days? SO EXCITED!

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

by Hanky in July 29 - 11:14 pm

@Me- totally… I really want to know… maybe she might get to District 13…

@Abe- Maybe not… I mean Katniss might not have known that the rebellion was going on, so we wouldn’t have because its her POV but it could be going on, but on a smaller scale.
The berries could have just made it bigger, or brought it on to more Districts…
Or if the whole Katniss’s father is still alive thing is really true than that District 13 thing would be going on right? What if it changed that from and underground operation to widescale?

@ BLAZE and HANKY

I completely agree people just want to stick Gale with Madge so Peeta and Katniss get to stay together.. I mean Gale isn’t just going to “settle” with Madge, Katniss is his love! Haven’t they had each others’ backs for years now? Didn’t Katniss pretty much choose Gale in CF? And Gale made it clear he loved Katniss… They are going to end up together so let’s just stick Peeta with Madge and get this over with!

By the way i’m totally Team Gale and Team Katniss! ;)

She definitely has a secret. I think the pin will play a key role in the next book (the title gives it away). There might have been a plan for the rebellion, but I doubt she was or knew she was a part of it. Maybe the pin sent out a signal to people in other districts that it was time for the rebellion to start. The rebellion was probably going to start with Maysilee Donner (Madge’s aunt.) but backfired when she died.

Well, fist things first. The big question is did Madge even survive? Remember, “Katniss, there is no District 12.”

I think that Madge just gave the pin to Katniss because she cared about her and to remind the Capitol that they ARE responsible for her aunt Maysilee death.
Though By the way Madge has acted toward Gale in the begining of HG and after Gale gets wipped in CF, I think they should be together
@THISPERSON – how can you think that Peeta and Madge should get together?!? they barley know eachother where as Gale has known her for years!!! What the heck?!?!?!?!?!?

by Everglade Lizzil in August 05 - 5:36 pm

Interesting concept. I was thinking about this when I first read the book, then again when I re-read it.
Since the pin is a mockingjay, the symbol of something that exists against the Capitol’s will, it HAS to be predesigned. And later in Catching Fire when they figure out that the pin was Madge’s Aunt’s, who was Katniss’s mother’s friend and a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games – the second Quarter Quell. All that leads you to believe that the rebellion has existed since then and that Haymitch winning against all odds, being the only district 12 winner (that is still alive) when there were 48 tributes that year instead of 24, also has something to do with rebellion. It takes you in endless circles that can eventually conclude in that the 1st rebellion that started the Hunger Games, never really died. District 13 was destroyed, but that doesn’t mean that the rebellion was.
So, yeah, there was definitely a predestined meaning to the pin. Someone sent Madge to give it to Katniss. And later, when Katniss forgets about the pin, and Cinna gives it to her before she goes into the arena. I don’t think that’s just Cinna being nice. There was a reason Cinna was a new designer and why he CHOSE to design for district 12. And, again, Catching Fire proves Cinna being in the rebellion by turning Katnniss’s dress into the mockingjay…

by Mrs. Peeta Mellark in August 16 - 8:21 pm

I think that Madge knew about her aunt and the token in the 2nd quarter quell and that her mom was friends with her and everything. She probably knew that it meant a lot to Katniss’s mom.

Or, on the other hand, she could have been just being a good friend and giving her her own token, but may not have known about the effect it was gonna have on the rebellions. In my opinion, Madge is very smart, but most likely not have known about the mockingjay and what it represented and the whole story behind it and how it symbolizes rebellion.

There can actually be many theories for this question. It is very unknown to what the real answer might be because nobody sees Madge as a really important character. She doesn’t have a big role in the book, but her role is very important BECAUSE of the mockingjay that she gave Katniss as a token.

Madge definitly knew about the pin because why on earth would she give her a pin with a mockingjay on it. Madge seems really smart and she wasnt really Katniss friend then so it makes no sence for it to be a gift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

madge definetly knows something.

And ppl be realistic, peeta and katniss r so going to be together!!! i mean, Gale’s a likely choice but he’s just another Jacob(Twilight).

plus, i think madge dies. come on she basically started the rebellion(maybe), so it’s likely she’ll die because of it.

I think Madge is in on the rebellion. Or maybe her mom is not who she says she is. I think her mom traded places with her twin sister when she was chosen. I also think Madge found out about the rebellion by accident.

by Eve-district 8 in November 08 - 7:47 pm

Madge was no doubt related to the rebellion, or else she wouldn’t have been in the books at all. I think she may have had orders to give it to Katniss to signal other districts.
Whatever her reason it was clearly very important, because of her extreme urgency. Its too bad we never find out in the book.. maybe there will be something in the movie.
