Current Status of ‘The Hunger Games’ Movie – Rating, Director & More

Categories: The Hunger Games Movie

I thought I’d post this as it’s own article, since I couldn’t put everything in the previous post.
Collins wrote a draft of the screenplay, and Billy Ray, who wrote State of Play and is set to adapt the Fox action drama 24 into a feature, completed a polish. Producers are now searching for a director.
Lionsgate president of production Alli Shearmur collected all of the studio’s top brass to get on the phone when it came time to convince Jacobson they were in sync. “That never happens at a big studio,” Jacobson said. “We were all just really emotionally invested fans.”The Hunger Games has found older fans apart from the excited filmmakers, which is good news for a potential film franchise; Scholastic’s Leviathan estimates, based on word of mouth and members of the official Hunger Games Facebook page, half of all readers are adults. The book’s mainstream appeal, he explained, can be attributed to any number of its themes. “It taps into the culture of fear we live in, definitely… But it’s also accessible in other ways. There’s action, a love triangle, a headstrong female lead, science-fiction… ”
All involved agree that the film should play to older crowds but “should absolutely be rated PG-13,” Jacobson said. “It would be wrong to make the R-rated version of it.”
“The situations are so intense and frightening; it’s just going to be a matter of creating suspense,” she said. “The power of movies can be just as much about what you don’t see as what you do.”

I agree it should be PG-13

Yay!! I hope it turns out okay!!! Im glad there not going to make it R, because that would loose them most of the 14-15 fans

I think it should be at LEAST pg-13.

i hope the fact that it’ll be pg-13 won’t take away important things from the book, or make them less horrible. I think it would be better as rated R. Just because that’s how it is, and it’s how it is in the book, why should the movies be less?

I agree with Luana
If they plan to make it PG-13 they will probably have to cut alot of the terror and violence from arena, which is partly what made the books so gripping and proved how twisted soicety had become

PG13? Fine. But, please, PLEASE Lionsgate, let it be gory. And NOT focus all on the slight love triangle. I trust that Suzanne Collins wrote a wonderful, true to the book screenplay and I’m pumped. I’m re-reading the series and I just love the fact that the movie migt show us all kinds of things. Like the people in the districts watching the games on tv. And how they react to everything that happens. And how the capital and its citizens look. It’s gonna be amazing and I can’t wait.

if they made it rated R at least half the fans couldent watch so PG-13 is aright with me

If it was done to reflect the story exactly as written and described in the book, it would have to have an R rating, no way around it.
A PG-13 rating means they’ll have to soften something…. probably the gore.

Yeah, to get the movie as gruesome and as true to the book as possible, they’d have no choice but to make it R. But then, I couldn’t see it with my friends, and my mom sure as heck wouldn’t take me! So Pg-13 is ok. As long as it’s not PG- then the movie would be super wimpy! I can’t wait until they get a director!

I’m completely fine with PG13. That means most of the fans could watch it. Also, I like how she mentions that in order to create the terror of the Hunger Games, it’s all about creating a matter of suspense. That’s what the Hunger Games was all about. Sure it was gory at some points, but the parts that really got you was the question of who’s going to live and die. I don’t think gore is even necessary to make the film ‘good’. Blood and gore doesn’t make you feel scared for the characters [it just makes you feel disgusted]; it’s the suspense and terror that keeps on the edge of your seat making you want to see more. I’m hoping that they will be able to achieve that as that’s what I loved about the Hunger Games.
Once again, I have confidence in Lionsgate and Nina Jacobson. I hope they’ll be able to create a good film with the direction their going.

If it’s R I dont think my mom would let me see it. I hope is PG-13 and well made. The Hunger Games is all about the blood! Haha well not all but there is a lot.

I think PG-13 is a good rating. I wouldnt find it fair if it was a R because if the younger fans have read the book and can deal with that why cant they see the film. Also if it was R it would focus too much on gore- I want it to be gory and really hope they dont make love a massive part of it. Im really looking forward to more news on the film ![]()

I’m glad it’s PG13. A lot of people (including me) wouldn’t be able to go see it otherwise. Becuase Collins wrote the screenplay, I’d say it will still be pretty close to the book and gripping, even if the gore isn’t as intense as in the book. ![]()

i am happy it’s pg-13. if they rated it R, they would lose a lot of the original viewers.

if they turn this movie into a love story i’ll lose all faith in books being made into movies

Definitely PG-13. What about casting? Anyone know about auditions or casting? I cant find anything. Let me know. I would like more info on auditions if possible.

I’m super glad it’s PG-13. I also agree with district13girl and Nadine, if the focus of the movie is romance, I’m probably going to want a refund of my tickets. ![]()

Oh, yeah, also I liked the part in the article where it said that Suzanne was concerned that the movie would glorify the violence instead of critique it like the book was supposed to do. I completely agree; the reason the book showed a lot of violence was to make the book more suspenseful, and to show how cruel the capitol was to the districts. I hope the movie does the book justice. ^_^

it should be PG-13 since the book is Teen (UK and young adults (US) and I’m a younger reader myself so I wouldn’t want it an R but it should still be gory.. but no it shouldn’t be about the romance…. it would be devastating if it would turn out like that!

think it should be PG-13, but if it was r-rated, all the goryness and pure-anti war-message would be spread across the screen.
FINNICK-PRIM-CINNA.

I think they will make the film about the romance. Regardless of who wrote it.
Remeber this is a business. If they make the love triangle big, they can advertise it on a larger scale and sell more. They’d make more money – and at the end of the day, they don’t care about the fans. They care about profit.

ohhh this makes me so excited!! one more step down now tey just need to get a director then the actors then the filming then TAAH-DAAH its time for the movie!

Probably won’t happen, but I would love to see Christopher Nolan direct the film. He has an amazing gift for directing. He could keep the gritty escense of the arena without making it offensive to the younger, more sensitive audience. With the right creative team, he could bring the world of Panem to life on screen.

1. I really hope that they don’t soften the gore because that’s really what makes the book so powerful and real for me. 2. I’m a romantic at heart, but I really hope that the romance is only a side-story because the theme of the story is war and the effects it has on people, not romance.

What about casting? I hope there will be open casting calls, especially for katniss

I hope that they choose unknowns for the main characters…cause then the people who come will be expecting them to act like whatever their famous for….

i think its good tht itlll pg-13, cuz then the core audience can still c it, and it wont b too wimpy. i agree tht christopher nolan should totally direct it, i think tht he would do a really good job w/ it. and i think tht they can keep the suspense of the hunger games w/out putting in a ton of gore, all u need is the rite director and stuff. also, if they make this a twilight ill KILL them, but tht all comes back down 2 the director. as 4 the actors, id like 2 c an unknown as katniss, and alex ludwig as peeta, seeing as alex pettyfer is a lil 2 old… maybe him as finnick? chloe martinez as prim (she did a prety good job in diary of a wimpy kid, which, as i meant mention was an EXCELLENT book 2 screen translation) anyways, if the auditions r open and close by where i live, i think ill audition for like, district 6 girl or something. so yeah, thts my oppinion

I swear if they make Peter Jackson the director I am going to have a fangasm. The movie will be so great if he is in charge. He played the violence and gore in the lord of the rings so well, you can’t go wrong with peter jackson.

I agree with the whole suspense and all of that but come on…make it M…cause that way it can be viewed by 13 year olds but also have mature content…….PLEASE

They’ll make it PG-13, mainly because of the ages of the fans.

It better not become a new ‘Twilight’. I want good storytelling, not ‘sexy’ actors falling in love.
They better also have be on the rim of turning rated R. Like PG16.

This is exactly what I was afraid of. Since it’s Scholastic, they’ll want to minimize the violence and try to tone down the fighting and death.
But this book is ALL ABOUT death and blood and fighting! There’s children being thrown into an arena for a fight to the death for crying out loud! How does that even remotely seem PG-13?
How can you honestly recreate all the aspects of a war without death and blood? If the reader can pain an image with Suzanne Collin’s vividly explicit Rated R scenes, then I think we can handle the movie too.

Peter Jackson is working on the Hobbit. (Part 1 and 2)

They don’t even have a director or cast yet, this film is still at least a couple/few years away. By then the “young” fans will mostly be old enough for a R rating. There is no way to do this well as PG.

I think the movie is supposed to come out by 2011 December or early 2012. The movie better stay to the books story line though, I don’t understand what’s so hard to keep the plot right.

Lionsgate shouldn’t be getting their facts from facebook. That isn’t a good way to get realistic numbers. I don’t have a facebook and I still love HG.

No matter what, the movies need to have the blood and guts that the books have. No over the top, but the RIGHT amount as portrayed in the book. Without that, the movies would just seem wrong.

will the people who say Kaya Scoldelario would be a good Katniss STOP?!? She’s only ever been in skins and she wasn’t a very good actress in that. Just drugged up.

im happy about it being pg13. because they can still keep the fans, most of the violence and not have to make it whimpy and pg. i wouldnt want to see it if it was rated r or pg because thats just not right. pg takes away from the story and if it was r i wouldnt be able to go and see it, let alone want to if all its gonna do is violence. thats not the entire premise of the book. so im glad.

i am actually pleased that it will be pg 13. many time when writers get their hands on a bloody mess like this they tend to go out of control on the gore. making it pg 13 will enable all of the fans to see it as well as focus on the inner conflict of the characters. im not to worried about them cutting parts out because you can do a lot with out gore. you can show what happens to people in many ways without actually seeing it happen to them. such as through shadows or using less blood or just quick flashes. as long as they keep under the time limit of how much gore can be seen on camera before it breaks the bounds and becomes R. for there are certain regulations such as how much blood, nudity, sexual content, language ect that all affect the rating of the film. if they can make horrifying plays that anyone over 13 can see. and trust me i have seen some that would twist your gut. then they can do the same with a pg13 movie. so though the book is rather strong in its contents you don’t see Suzanne Collins going on and on about the blood dripping from someones wound. I am thoroughly excited for this film and im sure Lionsgate wont let us down.

I don’t know… I’m glad it will be PG-13 and all… but I’m just affraid it won’t be good if they make it to “watered down”.
