Suzanne Collins Says Gary Ross is “The One’ for the Hunger Games Movie

Suzanne said she thought Gary Ross (rumored to be the likely director for The Hunger Games) was a great guy after having had a phone conversation with him. She also said from the indications she’s been receiving from Lionsgate and the producers, he’s “the one.”
Thus far, Suzanne said she has submitted two draft screenplays to Lionsgate, and they also have a screenwriter (Billy Ray) working on rewrites. She also said that since she wrote the books, she’d prefer to let someone else do the screenplay! However, she’s been very involved in the whole process, and they are working hard to be true to the book, although its extremely hard to condense nearly 400 pages into 2 hours of film.

Does anyone else think the movies should be 2 1/2 hours long. With so much in the book that extra half hour will make it flow better

Well, I don’t know why she’d want someone else to write the screenplay…I mean, I’d totally prefer to write it myself, but whatever. As long as they do a good job, it’s okay! And I’m sort of glad they are planning on making it a 2 hour film (though I wouldnt mind 3!)

She said she wanted the movie told from a audience’s perspective. She probably wants somebody to think outside the box. NOT outside the book, outside the box. Thinking as a audience would be hard for her since SHE IS Katniss. SHE knows Katniss better then any of us, so it would be hard for her to be the audience.

I hope that they consider making this movie longer and not trying to condense it too much. I would rather have a three hour film, then a chopped two hour.

Where is this going to be filmed, do you think? I’m crossing my fingers and toes for Vancouver. I actually think it’s quite likely to be in Vancouver. Here’s why:
-Lionsgate’s HQ is run out of California, but it was formed in Vancouver. And I personally think the Vancouver forests are more “District 12″ and Capitol-like (west of the Rockies) than California
-Nina Jacobson recently produced another film shot in Vancouver, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which shows she is willing to work in Vancouver
-Vancouver has a large film ndustry. It’s sometimes called “Hollywood North”
And I’m sure I had at least one more reason, and perhaps this is just wishful thinking on my part, but I really hope it will be shot in Vancouver. Where does everyone else think it should be filmed?

this is great news..shes the author…as much as we are attached to the books, this is her baby and Im SO glad shes involved in the process…and I love that shes written draft scripts, because ofcourse then we can ensure that the movie will be good…The movie HAS to have an amazing script, cause thats the backbone…without a great script, you can have a 100 million dollar budget and STILL the movie will flop….oh this is SO exciting

i honestly didn’t understand half of the deaths until parts when she named who died and literally said ‘—— is dead’ ‘——,—,—— all dead within 8 hours’ or watever she said (i don’t want to give everything away) i rad way to fast and then i started reading really slowly after i realized finnick was dead

1/3 away though the book(I know what your thinking “An OVERNIGHTER AND ONLY THAT FAR!!!” I was thinking the same thing…That was a long night.)
Night 2: 13 hours of sleep

Night 3: Basically an overnighter, but at about 11:30 Am I feel asleep for about an hour.

yea, i read throughout the day AND night. every chance i got, i was reading it. like the night i got the book, i started reading immediately until like 2 in the morning. i woke up about 8 in the morniing (yea, ur probably like BULL CRAP U DID NOT SLEEP FOR ONLY 6 HOURS) , but i set an alarm on my phone to wake up at that time. that day, i did nothing but read and i STILL hadnt finished it. that night after, i was ALMOST FINISHED with the book, but then i fell asleep with my finger in the book, and i still had my page in the morning (i dont really move around in my sleep). but that morning i FINALLY finished it. and then i sold my extra mockingjay on ebay. i refused to sell it until i finished reading my copy first. LOL

I’m not sure I like this choice… I think they need someone who has tackled movies that are darker than his… I think the movie will seem to light with his direction. But that’s just me.

I think the people that don’t like the ending didn’t understand it. ***SPOILER***
If you think that katniss really wanted another hungergames, and she just gave in to be as cruel as the capitol, then i’d understand why you hate it. I loved the ending because i’m pretty sure, and it seems like lots of people agree, that Katniss was just playing coin’s game until she could kill her. The book talks about how katniss knew that having more games is the worst thing to even think of…then she thought of her options carefully…then said yes. Haymitch understood her…and voted yes aswell…obviously communcicating nonverbally as they often do. LOVED IT!!!
