Kaya Scoldelario, the fan favorite for the role of Katniss, tweeted that she hopes to audition!
A fan tweeted her a petition they had put together for her to play Katniss.

She has a weird smile sometimes, but I wouldn’t mind her playing Katniss. She looks young enough, and her face works. She’s also pretty skinny looking, which suits Katniss.

Am I the only one who thinks she looks nothing like Katniss? I’m literally stunned at how many people think she looks like her. And her American accent isn’t that great either. Plus I want to see an unknown. I’m tired of all these other actresses getting their feet in everything; it’s getting old. Fresh faces are what Hollywood and this movie need.

I don’t get it, why do you all see her as Katniss, is it due to the fact she played effie in skins? I need a fresh face…Hunger Games will play out better that way, and no offense to Brits for they have super talented actors, but the girl should be an American. It would spin well with the films…..Harry Potter capatilized on that idea.

While I think that she does have a certain look about her that could pull off Katniss (pretty but could also be a killer. Haha) I think that she’s to tall to play the role. Katniss is supposed to be small statured for her age and look young. But I do think that she is better than a lot of other options people have been discussing.

I don’t understand why people have a problem with Kaya being British. First of all there are people called dialect coaches who are hired by studios to help actors speak with the correct accents of the regions they are playing their characters are from. Just because her american accent may not have been perfect before (I wouldn’t know, Ive never heard her speak with one) doesn’t mean she can’t improve it! Secondly, I don’t think it matters where the actress who plays Katniss is from. Panem is not the United States….just because its North America doesn’t mean anything as far as dialect goes. Suzanne Collins has been very vague about telling us where the districts are located, only giving a few hints about some of them. Somewhere she has said that Katniss’ accent is a future version of an appalachian accent. Even the people from the Capital talk with a weird affected accent. So all that being said, who cares where the actors hail from because the accents they will be using in the film probably aren’t around today anyway.
As far as Kaya for Katniss, I’m all for it! I think she physically fits the description and is a good actress. I also am one of the people who think that even though Katniss is 16 the first book, she probably looks a bit older than her age considering the hard life and conditions she has been through and dealt with. Stress and hardship age you. Just look at the photo of the national geographic girl….she was around age 13 or younger when the photograph was taken of her, whereas she looks like shes more in her mid to late teens. And if you look at the picture taken of her recently, she looks like shes in her fortys when in reality she was in her late twenties. My point is that especially since the death of her father, Katniss has taken on the role of mother/father/provider for her family, which is stressful in and of itself as an adult let alone a child. She spends lots of time outside in the sun hunting (also ages a person) And considering the lack of $$ and her personality towards “beauty”, I doubt she has any face creams or lotions to help soften her skin and overall look. Now don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying they should cast an actress who looks 25, just that if the actress looks a bit older than a 16 year old, I think it would be a bit more realistic and believable….

My issue with the whole American vs. British conflict has nothing to do with that I have anything against British actors (for many of them are my fav) and the question that can kaya pull off an american accent. (Even with dialect coaches, some actors have difficulty manipulating their voice.)
The reason why I just put out this idea that the main cast should be american is due to the fact that this book is stapled as a fresh face piece. For example, in Harry Potter all the actors in those films are British, it is a proud reputation for them. I think that Hunger Games should take that on as well. Another example is the The Girl with The Dragon Tatoo: the movie was beautifully done in sweden with swedish actors…..why have to “hollywoodize” it.

And to the person who says who cares if she doesnt use an american accent…..do you know how much we differ from a typical british accent due to the last 100 years. Across the country, our dialects are so diverse than from its origin….that most americans can not properly relicate a british accent. The way americans prouniciate our nouns vs vowels are not in sync with with the majority of western Europe. So if she comes in with a british accent, how awkward would that be to belive that accent would exist in the far future in america or panem?

why not an unknown Franny? Much better an unknown than an american actress/actor. I mean look at harry potter, that turned out just fine. I just think that familar faces that u have seen in so many movies..just kinda ruins it. Unknowns are a breath of fresh air. i’m tired of movies being messed up and over done by “hollywood”
P.S. As for kaya, she wont have her british accent. they’ll have her learn to speak proper american. simple as that.

I totally agree with “not so much” comments. We need an American girl from the appalachian region. Come on, people, this is an American work, deeply rooted in American soil. I also agree that the Swedish Movie with the Dragon Tatoo girl should not be redone. Why change a masterpiece? It’s like the American version of “Death at a Funeral” Forgive me for saying this, but why Hollywood tends to Americanize everything? I love foreign films because they enrich and expand my own culture and I have to say that foreign films as just as good or even sometimes better than American cinema. Why change a good thing?

About the whole accent thing: You never know, maybe in the future the british took over america and the languages merged. If she could pull off at least a half decent american accent, I think it would be believable. To me, she is the best katniss I have seen so far, although none fit my perfect mind image.She’s a bit pale, but they can fix that.

And another thing with the American accent. Suzanne Collins always reads the books with Katniss having a Southern accent. And it would be even harder for her to do that than just a normal American accent. Now personally I don’t want them to have Southern accents in the movie. I mean just the thought of Gale and Peeta talking like that gives me the creeps….. so not attractive. But yeah if they did then that would be even harder. Just saying.

Yeah I just can’t imagine her being all BA with a southern accent….. And don’t get me started on the idea of Peeta and Gale professing love with southern accents. Makes me cringe. Glehhhh. Oh and just so you know I am totally on your side about the whole Katniss hating Gale argument. Although I think that it was less about Katniss hating Gale and more about the fact that whenever Katniss saw or thought of Gale after that it would always remind her of the pain of Prims death. And Gale knew that in order for Katniss to go on living in happiness she needed him out of her life so she could get out of the pain of her past and move on with her life. Especially with the whole “That was the one thing I had going for me. Protecting your family.” line. That just shows that he realizes that in her mind his need to be around is gone because he can no longer protect her family. In fact in her mind he might have been the one to harm her family. So yeah saddest thing ever……

And yeah I don’t think that Kaya would be a bad choice. In fact out of all the people that have been suggested for the part so far I think she is the best. She has the pretty/unusual/tough look about her that Katniss needs to have. But overall I think they should do open auditions to try to find an unknown and then if an already established actress is their favorite pick then yeah pick her. But I think they should give unknowns at least a chance!

People are so effing stupid sometimes. I can bet 100% that whoever the hell said that Kaya had a fake tan doesn’t know that she’s half brazillian. Kaya can act. She’s shown that over the four series on skins. She just got cast as Cathy Earnshaw in Wuthering Heights, a role that was sought after by actresses such as natalie portman, gemma arterton. She’s talented.
Also, Kaya is really petite, if anything she looks younger than 17. And she can just get a dialect coach. It’s not that hard. Or she can work on it a bit harder. I mean really guys. She had what literally four lines in Moon. I bet she didn’t practice that one as much, or get a dialect coach then, because she had more of a cameo role in that film. So people shut up.
And Nina Dobrev looks way older than Kaya.

If she was used for the role, I think she’d have some beefing up to do. Sure, she’s pretty and angsty looking, but I can’t imagine Katniss without imagining her looking pretty buff, as well. If you’ve ever shot a bow, man, that’ll make your arms look pretty ripped.
I think they should cast a HS linebacker or college freshman as Peeta – seems to me people forget that he’s not some slender little ripped guy… he’s described as ‘stocky’, and he’s from a family that’s well-fed. Chord Overstreet has a really pretty face, and honestly, a lot of the fanart I’ve seen (I’m really thinking of burdge-bug’s stuff the most) looks a lot like him. But he’d have to start pumpin’ some serious iron. He’s got that trustworthy face, though.
Ellen Albertini Dow (from Wedding Crashers) would make a fun Madge (as long as Ellen isn’t being all evil/crazy looking).

Honestly, you need to be more respectful about other people’s opinions. I’m merely pointing out facts, and my own opinions. So calm down. And I’m not going to debate with you. because you’ve obviously have never watched skins. and anyways, Kaya probably won’t be able to do it anyways. For one she has Wuthering Heights to do, which honestly I would choose over the Hunger Games, just cause she worked way to hard to get the role, and second if the Skins movie is confirmed then she really can’t do the hunger games. Kaya would be fantastic and I don’t see why her being British damages anything. And FYI Harry Potter wouldn’t have been as appealing if it had been American actors (I think I saw a few people comment with something like that). Harry Potter is written by a British woman, the story takes place in the UK and it is a very British book.
I don’t really think that any of THG is set to any specific race or accent. If they want to make one district Bristish, then they can be British. Also, Hugh Laurie is British, so your argument is invalid.

Technically, it doesn’t say anywhere that they have a southern accent in District 12. Honestly, how many people read THG and thought Katniss had a southern accent? Also, just because it takes place in NA doesn’t mean that every one is North American. Seeing as we know nothing about the nature of the rest of the world, I don’t think we can conclude so quickly that people from other continents have all conjoined in one place.
People often have dialect coaches to help actors hide their accents for roles. I see no problem.

When I saw her pic before, I think that she’d do great for role of Katniss, but after I saw her biography, pictures and videos in Skins, I was turned off. Ewww. I can’t believe that she can do the daring stuffs. Ewww. Seeing her with her underwear? Gross. And I just saw a picture of her, smoking.

As for Katniss having black hair I don’t think it ever said ‘black’ but just dark. I think it said that gales hair was black yes and that they looked simler but I also pictured Katniss with dark brown like what Kaya has anyways. Her eyes can easily be changed with contacts and the hair if it has to be black can be dyed. This is Katniss (to me anyways)

Anyone known would ruin the movie. Besides, Lionsgate has announced they are casting unknowns, but the casting director is currently casting Breaking Dawn.
I think they should have some sort of online auditions, like having a place to email headshots and resemees and being able to send a video of yourself auditioning.

I’ve never heard of most of the people you guys are arguing about, but I agree that the lady at the top of the page looks totally wrong for katniss. I think that a lot of things about katniss can be changed, so long as she is kind of short and looks young for a sixteen year old. She needs to be easy to underestimate ( remember how one of the contestants thought she was just a simpleton and barely a threat in the first book), but she also needs to have a quiet confidence, something that says “you don’t know what I’m capable of.”
I think that Hugh Laurie would be great as haymitch if he acts the way he does on house. He’s probably the only known actor that wouldn’t completely ruin it. Unless Kristen Stewart plays one of the other tributes, maybe the girl from One… she was a horrible pick as Bella, and I would love to see katniss kill her (I know that’s mean, but it’s true)
anyway, back to katniss
she’s small for a sixteen year old, and since fifteen year olds are about the same size, she should be played by a thirteen or fourteen year old. She shouldn’t be particularly pretty, or be Hollywood perfect. acctually, she would look more realistic if she had a few small zits, or maybe a mole. Her inner forearm should be kind of pinkish because she wouldn’t have acsess to a gaurd and no matter how good you are at archery, you still clip your elbow every once in a while. Then again, she’s pretty smart, so she may have made one, but if she did, it has to be included with her costume. She shouldn’t be too tan because katniss spends most of her hunting time under the cover of trees, but she shouldn’t be too pale because she still swims in the lake. I don’t really think that her hair should be dark. If anything, it should be blonde, like prim’s and her mom’s, but haircolor won’t make me dislike a katniss if she is the right katniss. I mean, look at annabeth from percy jackson; she was supposed to be blonde with grey eyes, but the acress that played her had brown hair and blue eyes, and she did well (my only qualm about annabeth in the movie was that she didn’t call Percy “seaweed brain”). However, whoever does end up playing katniss needs to have hair long enough to braid, or it will be immposible to think of her as katniss.
