1. What was the most difficult part of filming this short film?
Actually, most of the hard work was done by John Lyde beforehand in getting all the props together and making the spear that went through me. We did have problems with one of the cameras while filming, but it all ended up great.
2. How long did hair/makeup take for you?
My hair and makeup didn’t take too long, maybe 10-15 minutes. I didn’t have any cuts until they had me put the fake blood in my mouth and around my hands.
3. Does it take a while to get into character for such intense scenes?
I prepared myself by putting myself in Rue’s situation. John Lyde was an amazing director in helping me to understand Rue’s perspective. I also tried to think about what would be going through my head if this were really happening to me. I thought about being worried about who was going to help and care for my family and siblings. In the book it says that Rue had younger siblings that she loved and took care of, and I know that was a thought that would be going through my head if that was happening to me. I have a strong relationship with my siblings and I love them and take care of them a lot and I would be really worried about my family if I was dying. Also I would be thinking about how much the spear in my gut would hurt. I know that something like that wouldn’t be very easy to just ignore so I tried to portray the pain that Rue would have been feeling.
4. Is crying on cue difficult / were those real tears in the short? If they were real, how do you make yourself cry?
Crying through a scene is not difficult as the emotion of the scene builds up- you can just feel it and you can cry… they were real tears.
5. Some people believe that young actors shouldn’t be allowed or aren’t able to handle such emotional / graphic content in their projects. Why do you think young actors need to be chosen for this movie?
I think that younger actors make the scene more emotional and believable. There are kids out there that can act and should be given the chance to prove their skills.
6. Do you think the actor’s appearance before hair/makeup should be a deciding factor for a role, when there is a specific description in the book?
I think the acting abilities should be the first deciding factor, but then I know a lot of “movie magic” can happen behind the scenes to make people appear however you need them to. I’ve been able to dye my hair and wear different colored contacts for a few of the roles I’ve played. I do think people should fit the general description given in the book, but that their acting is the most important thing. For me, bad acting would ruin the movie before the wrong color skin would.
8. If you were in Katniss’ situation, would you volunteer for a family member?
Yes! I could never send one of my little brothers in to be killed!
9. What would be your strategy in the Hunger Games, do you think you would win?
Umm- I don’t think so! I don’t have any of the skills that would be useful in the Hunger Games! Maybe I could ACT like I did. =)
10. How much rehearsal went into the film? What did you do to prepare?
We only rehearsed the scenes just before we shot them. I had been very busy with school the week before we shot the scene and didn’t actually read through the scene until the night before. I always read through the script until I have them memorized, and since there were not very many lines, it didn’t take long. Everyone else came prepared also, so the scenes went pretty quickly.
11. What was the most fun part about being a part of this project?
The spear in my gut!
12. How was the scene shot where you get stabbed by the spear? It looked very realistic!John made the spear come apart and hooked to a belt around my waist. When he had the boy throw it, it wasn’t any where close to me, but my natural reaction was to jerk when it hit the ground. John’s editing makes it look like it hit me. I asked them to make the belt as tight as possible because I wanted it to be a little hard to breath so I could “feel” the spear better. I actually had a lot of fun walking around before and after the scene with a big spear in my belly! I went to the park and told the little kids not to ever play with spears!
13. People think you would be great for the role of Prim, Katniss’ sister. If you could choose, would you want to play Rue, or Prim?
As much as I loved playing the character Rue, I would love to play Prim. I think that I fit the description of Prim better than Rue and I just had a strong personal connection with her.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
She shold play Prim. YES!!

Her answer for question 3 is a little off….she says “In the book it never says that Rue had younger siblings that she loved and took care of…”
Quoting from the book: ‘And I come to know Rue, the oldest of six kids, fiercely protective of her siblings.”
Sorry that was just sort of bugging me!!!

@TeamPeetaForever: Haha! That bugged me too. I’m like, wait a minute! Did you read the whole book?
Anyway, I wouldn’t be mad at all if she were Prim. I always pictured her a bit younger and smaller, but Savanna’s good.

@TeamPeetaForever- Same.
That, and #8. ‘If you were in Katniss’ situation, would you volunteer for a family member?
Yes! I could never send one of my little brothers in to be killed!’
You can’t volunteer for a boy, if you’re a girl.

She’s such an amazing actress, and she’s only twelve years old. I wouldn’t mind her as Prim at all. Heck, she’s my top choice! Her kind spirit just refreshes me and that’s how I find the right actresses. She would be wonderful. I want her and Danielle as close to the movie as possible.

hey everyone, thanks for all your support! I’m Savanna’s mom and I just want to apologize about the mistake she made about Rue’s family. She’s only read the first book (I wouldn’t let her read them last year) and I wasn’t sure if it mentioned Rue’s siblings in the first or second book and didn’t want to spoil anything for her!! You are amazing fans and dead on in all your observations of the book! Thanks again and please keep your fingers crossed!

I think the girl who played Rue was really good! But she’d be better at Prim. But The girl who played Katniss, I don’t think shes good for her, she would be a better Clove or something but she looked a bit too old to be playing Katniss

Savanna is beautiful… I wish I could talk to her sometime…

Katniss in the short film is played by Danielle Chuchran, who looks a LOT better than the actress they chose to be Katniss for the Lionsgate film coming up. But we’ll just have to wait to see her acting skills in the movie, can’t wait!!
YOU’RE A TRUE FAN ONLY IF YOU READ THE BOOKS BEFORE YOU WATCH THE MOVIE SO READ… READ TO BE A TRUE FAN NOW…!!!!!

OMG Savanna’s MOM was on this post? OMGOMGOMG I have loved u 4 3 years Savanna. Seeing u in this film pushed me over the edge into Hunger Games OBSESSION! Just know that somewhere out there, a girl got to school and cried when Prim was cast. That for 3 years someone has been watching your movies (ONCE UPON A SUMMER is my absolute favourite) and that her name is Gabbi. Love u Savanna, and I hope that u auditioned! MWAH! And BTW I hope u make another short film with Prim in it so u can knock my socks off because you are the most pure, beautiful, talented actress out there.
