Nina Jacobson Talks ‘Hunger Games’ being next ‘Twilight-like’ Phenomenon

Entertainment Weekly talks to producer, Nina Jacobson, about Hunger Games’ potential:

One can’t help but wonder if the demand for an R-rating comes partly from adults who are somewhat mystified by the fact that they devoured a trilogy marketed to the YA audience. Not everyone appreciates being told that they’ve fallen hard for “the next Twilight,” as many in the press have already dubbed Collins’ anti-war trilogy.

Producer Nina Jacobson is no stranger to the comparison, even if it’s one she doesn’t buy.  “I think anybody who’s read the two books knows that they are as different as night and day, with very little in common other than the youthfulness of their protagonists,” she says. “I mean, Holden Caulfield is young too! But as a producer you can’t help but be thrilled that people are comparing something that you’re working on to something that so many people love.”

‘HUNGER GAMES’ BEING NEXT ‘TWILIGHT-LIKE’ PHENOMENON

Hope not, because that basically means ‘Crappy films being overrated’ and also means a lot of haters.

I rather it be a LOTR/HP like Phenomenon.

NOOO. NO TWILIGHT COMPARISONS. It all became about the male actors in Twilight. And if that happens with the actors for Peeta and Gale . . . . the series would be ruined.

I love that she mentions Holden Caulfield. That book was so weird, but I loved it. I love her too. Yay for this love-fest! <3

Just PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let a new-comer in. And let her not act like a drug addict like CERTAIN PEOPLE WE KNOW.
And R-rating? You trying to lose money? Is this not titled a YA-fiction? And does “YA” not stand for Young Adults or Audiences? Come on, now.

@Joelle: Lol, love the comment about the drug addict. But Nina Jacobson already said that they were shooting for a PG-13 rating, and that they can probably achieve it.

    It’s going to be BIG!

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I really don’t want this to be like Twilight which is the worst movie in history. I f Peeta and Gale were like Edward and Jacob I would die and it would butcher the movies. Why does everyone always have to compare new movies to old popular ones?

OMIGOD!!!!i completely agree with everyone!!!Twilight sucks and we all know it, so dont compare the best book ever to it!!!!!and i hope they dont rate it R cause that means me and a lot of other kids wont really be able to watch it…well i would be able to but parents can be you know..overly dramatic about rating if you know what i mean

No, No, AND NO!!!! The Hunger Games is NOT Twilight!!!!!! In my opinion, I hope people compare it more to Harry Potter than Twilight, because the HP movies were actually good!!! Or maybe people could think of it as its own thing. That would be best!

One qestion. Are those THG fans on the right? I hope so, cause i like to see devoted fans showing off their adoration for the hunger games like me!!!! THIS IS GONNA BE GINORMUS!!

(Ginormus: word made up by Buddy the Elf!)

God God everyone, they mentioned Twilight and you broke out the caps lock and million exclamation points.
Really. Get a grip. We all know THG is nothing like Twilight.
(@ Peeta is a studmuffin-Have you seen these toilets? THEY’RE GINORMUS!)

I don’t think the comparison to Twilight is very much about content – anybody who knows a little about both can tell they’re totally different stories, not to mention that THG actually took thought and effort for its author to write… haha. The comparison is more about the phenomenon, in the same way LotR and HP were big phenomenons geared towards the YA audience… Twilight was the last YA film franchise – when it came out it was “the next Harry Potter” for the same reason that THG will be “the next Twilight” …

So the comparison is not an offensive comparison at all but merely a note on the way THG is probably going to be marketed and received…

which, if THG gets anywhere NEAR as big as Twilight or HP, then its a comparison I’ll be more than happy to acknowledge, because it means our demographic finally has something awesome to focus on again.

when they compare it to twilight they are talking about how big it will be not the quality of the work. and if people hate the hunger games its there loss because it is amazing

Is any1 else afraid of “fake fans” as I call thm ska pol who read the book right b4 or right after they c the movie then completely diss the books saying the book got some odd fact wrong while really it was the movie that was changed

I am not a fan of twilight at all, and anyone comparing THG to twilight (in regards to content and story) hasn’t read one of them, but I assume majority of people comparing HG to twilight is just predicting it will be as BIG as twilight. As long as people don’t write off HG because it is being compared to twilight. I know many people who were put off by the HG because of stephanie meyer’s recommendations. I just don’t want that to happen with the movies!
    :D

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
If anyone compares this to twilight it will suck…( hahaah geddit)

    happythyme

hahaha yup! I get it xD I’ve read the two books…and besides the narrative point of views are both girls, there is nothing really similar to one another…there is more gore and violence in the Hunger Games…and more intimate relationships. Twilight focuses more on Bella’s life and her relationship between vampires and werewolves…but in Hunger Games…you see a lot of the tributes and it sounds more realistic. And definately! Hunger games might be as big as twilight…or even bigger!! =D

    jess

@JESSICA….wow grow up were not whoress for having an opinion…and btw twilight sucks!!!that is all

ya umm twilight really doesnt do it for me….sorry but like i have heard someone say before if THG turns out like twilight than people wil be all gaga over peeta and gale and not the whole point of the movie just like what happened in twilight…..so agree with people twilight sucks!!!!!!!!!!long live the graet books called THG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21.
    Katie

Twilight is not my thing… but it would be awesome if THG became as big as it!

  22.
    b.j.

@KATIE i agree with you…but it kinda makes me mad cause when they show those screaming dans one person commented saying they were HG fans but based on the description under neath i think theyre twilight fans which to me isnt right especially when this is supposed to be about THG

    Rue

I hope thg gets really popular, but I don’t like it when people say “it’s the next twilight!” It’s like…
    a) they’re comparing it to twilight, and even though I’m a fan of the twilight series, I don’t think thg is ANYTHING like it.
    and
    b) Twilight is stealing all of the glory!! if they want to compliment thg, say it’s a great book, not “it’s great like twilight!” >:-(

    Rein

Ive got to admit I’m guilty. Yes I am a twilight fan, but I know that if this were to turn into “the next twilight” I would have to shoot someone. The films were great, but so many of the so called fans of twilight have never even opened the book once. The movie is not the Book. I would hate to see the hunger games as just another teenage movie like twilight

    daydreamer.

And again. The Hunger Games is not the next Twilight. It is the next Harry Potter <3<3
