EXCLUSIVE: Thomas McDonell Read ‘The Hunger Games’ Movie Script

We spoke to newcomer, Thomas McDonell, at the ‘I Am Number Four’ premiere in Los Angeles on February 9th. We went into the interview expecting nothing more than a short book-related chat for the main Page to Premiere Network site…and ended up with a possible Gale contender! McDonell is in his early 20′s, and a fantastic artist. You can watch a great video portrait of him by Interview Magazine, that showcases some of his work. He got into acting accidentally while studying abroad in China, and since then guest starred on an episode of Law and Order, and has the lead in the upcoming movie ‘Prom.’.
Q: What is your favorite book?
A: I actually just got ahold of a copy of I Am Number Four.
Q: Is it a good read?
A: I started reading it.
Q: Is that your favorite type of book? Sci-Fi?
A: No, but I read them sometimes.
Q: Which book would you love to see become a movie?
A: That’s a good question! I don’t know, you thinking of anything in particular?
Q: Yeah, we actually run a website about The Hunger Games, have you heard of that series of books?
A: Yeah.
Q: Would you be interested in becoming a part of that project?
A: Yeah, they’re making it I think, right?
Q: Yeah they actually just started casting right now and…
A: I read the script. (Smiles)
Q: You read the script!
Q: We were thinking you’d be a great actor for the role of Gale in The Hunger Games. What did you think about the script?
A: I think that Gale is sort of…well they’re all sort of interesting characters but Gale’s a cool one.
Q: The characters in The Hunger Games are actually supposed to be 16, and you’re probably a lot older than 16.
A: I’m a little older than 16. (Smiles)
Q: You could probably play a little younger. Do you think that’s a really important aspect of the story; that they need to be young?
A: I think that it’s important that they are young, to that story…but that’s sort of how the movie business works. Some play older and some play younger. Acting, you know.
Q: Yeah. Hopefully we’ll see you in The Hunger Games, perhaps, in the future!
A: That would be cool, huh!

Wow!! He does look exactly like I pictured Gale. HE IS TOTALLY THE FIRST PERSON I’VE EVER LIKED FOR GALE!
But what is with the one word answers…He’s got the looks, but I suppose its up to the casting director to say if he’s got the chops or not. Even if he looks just as I imagined Gale, I don’t want someone in the movie who isn’t excited about it…

What I appreciate the most about this guy is what a humble approach he took towards the interview, he seems like hes the kind of guy take on a role for the emotional value, and a true understanding of the character , not just the prospect of all the possible fangirls and fame he would get for it.
To top it all off, he definitely looks like a Gale
He is an all around yes. Thumbs up.

he’s defnitly got the looks. i love the fact that he’s completly….idk….quiet and unemotional. that’s exactly how i always thought of gale. the kind who keeps everything in and you’d never be able to tel what he’s thinking or feeling. the number one proof of that is how long he’s liked katniss and never showed a single feeling to her. she never found out he liked her till he kissed her. yeah, he’s a definite gale!!
mairead, i completly agree with you!!! he looks exactly like prince rillian. if i had to pick between him doing sliver chair and hunger games, id definitly choose silver chair. but….he’s not british. and no one even knows if theyre gonna make the silver chair next yet or not. so……we’ll see!!!!

I like him! He’s got a great look and a great attitude. I don’t think he seems unenthusiastic… I think he’s purposely trying to be vague and deadpan, but you can tell that he broke into a smile a few times So he’s probably interested, even if it’s just a little bit. Anyway, the way he responded to the questions, while mildly awkward, is very professional. He’s not jumping up and down and going YEAH I TOTALLY LOVE THE BOOKS I THINK I’D MAKE A GREAT GALE!
I don’t know about the guy’s acting, but looks and attitude wise he’s great.

Omg this guy looks like a young Johnny Depp he’s gorgeous! But I think he is a perfect Gale and he’s actually really sweet! I liked how he asked the interviewer what her name was. It’s sweet!

I don’t see how they could possibly cast anyone before they cast Katniss…am I the only one who thinks that? I feel like the story is supposed to be hers and whoever they choose to tell the story with her should have the proper chemistry. What if they cast Gale or Peeta and when they find the perfect Katniss, it just doesn’t fit? I’m hoping to see that they start with Katniss and go out from there, looking at a handful of actors that have auditioned.

Well, there he is! That’s my Gale. He’s perfect, in my opinion. The interview -was- awkward, but at least he seemed humble, There are lots of soft spoken actors out there who have amazing chops. I’m glad he’s read the script–he’s exactly how I pictured him.

Truly he didnt really seem perfect. i am desperate to find someone who has more of an in depth personallity. i want this movie to be spot on, i hope they will find someone ABSOLUTLEY GREAT for the roles of peeta and gale. especially katniss as well. she needs to be cold, confused, and shouold look reasonably like the book depicts her.

Anyway, I like him for Gale. His role in Prom kind of matches Gale’s personality. And he could really play off that harsh, cold personality Gale is supposed to have. And he matches his look! He’s skin is actually darker than that, so yeah. I think he’s perfect
