CONFIRMED: Jennifer Lawrence is Katniss, Suzanne Collins Says She’s “Perfect”

LOS ANGELES, CA, March 17, 2011- Lionsgate and the filmmakers of “The Hunger Games” are pleased to announce that Academy Award® nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence will assume the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games.”
The film will be directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of science fiction/action novels which have developed a global following. Lionsgate will release “The Hunger Games” on March 23, 2012.
Newcomer Lawrence’s meteoric ascent began in earnest with her breakout role in last year’s “Winter’s Bone,” and culminated in an Academy Award nomination. This summer, Lawrence will star in Matthew Vaughn’s “X Men: First Class” and in “The Beaver” directed by Jodie Foster. Later this year, she co-stars in the Sundance Grand Jury winner “Like Crazy”.
Author Suzanne Collins weighed in on the selection of Lawrence, “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.”
“I’m so excited work with Jen and see her bring this character to life. Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.” said director Gary Ross.

She’s blonde, she’s pale, she’s 20 years old. I don’t think Lionsgate could have cast a more wrong person for Katniss. So what if she’s a great actress? She has to look the part first. The fact that Suzzane Collins supports her makes me wonder if she forgot what her own character looks like.

I’m sure she’ll be awsome, I’m really happy they chose someone like her, who really can act! I’m very ready to trust the filmmakers and Suzanne Collins in that Jen will be amazing. We get an actress who was nominated for an Oscar playing a character very similar to Katniss, but you’re devastated because she doesn’t have brown hair, or she’s too curvy, or too old, or not exactly how you pictured her.

Just read an article ‘proof that hollywood has gotten lazy’.
It says that in the time it took to find a seasoned actress like JL they could have started off someone elses career like Hailee Steinfield was started off.

It’s ok to be upset. Katniss’ look is part of who she is: she grew up in the Seam. If she hadn’t, she never would’ve met Gale. They wouldn’t have needed to sign up for Tesserae, Prim wouldn’t have been selected. There would be no story. Katniss was young, that was the point of the story, the vulgarity that was children murdering children. So yes, we have a right not to be happy. It should’ve been Hailee.

Congratulations, Jennifer! I think this is something she’s definitely earned and will create a spot and dazzling career for her.
So, no matter what others say, I think that if she held her own at the auditions and impressed Gary, Nina, and SC, she deserves the role and I wish her all the best.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS A GREAT CHOICE.
Has anybody heard of 90210 or Gossip Girl? They cast 20-30 year olds playing 16 yr. olds. What about Twilight? Not many of them were too close to their characters ages. Society pictures teens looking older.
This movie will be seen by all age groups. The industry is doing it right, two hot lead characters. It’s all about sex appeal. It will still be an amazing movie with older and sexier actors. Katniss in the movie can not be the Katniss from the book. It’s two totally different industries.
Abigail Breslin coming at you with a bow and arrow? She’s too young to be considered hot. They want the new IT girl, that will give the movie more publicity. They want a girl that is older, more intelligent, and can act well. The younger ones still need to mature.
Lawrence will be doing countless interviews, magazine covers, and years of hard work to stay in the spot light. There are child labor laws that will restrict a 16 year old from shooting as many hours as an adult can.
So no, she’s not who we all pictured. But she will KILL it as the new IT girl. Guys will wanna see a hot girl shoot bows and arrows, girls will get a romantic love story, and adults wont feel weird watching a bunch of young tweens running around the screen killing people.
I am not some adult either, I am 17, but I understand both industries and Jennifer Lawrence will be great as Katniss.

I agree with all of you hoping for a new face, but of you who are saying no just because she blonde and pale? Why do you think it’s called “movie magic”? A little hair dye, some makeup, and I think she could maybe pull it off. I’ve never seen her in a movie that I remember, but if Lionsgate cast her, she ought to be a good actress. We all know that Gary, Nina, and Suzanne listened to the fans for the most part, and they thought this was the best choice. If all of you pessimists keep looking on the bad side of things, how are you going to even enjoy this movie?

I find it funny that some of you believe what the author says. I mean, she might be telling the truth or not…but no author is gonna say “Yeah, I don’t like her” or “She’s not what I imagined.” That’s just rude and gives a bad impression. I for one wouldn’t believe what SZ says or any author on the matter….this is after all, public media etc etc.
Well, I’m upset with the choice they made. Sorry, but the fact that 20-year olds in a movie where the book is based on “children” killing each other has a totally different aura than the book. I was hoping for Hailee. Oh well.

@Liz When does it ever say in the books that Katniss is some super sexy hot chick? She grew up in a post-apocalyptic society where children are forced into fighting to the death. She was among the poorest of the poor, and was lucky to even get a decent washing before having to care for both her mother and her sister. I not so sure anyone, no matter their potential gorgeousness, would have time to primp themselves up for a day in the town. I’m not the happiest about the casting, but what is keeping to going is the fact that special effects can and WILL dirty this girl up to make her actually look the part. Not super sexy Capitol Katniss.

To those of you who question Suzanne Collins’ ability to judge the casting decision, I feel like saying, Right, let’s just go tell her what Katniss looks like. ?!
I can understand the concerns that Collins may have been forced to give a nice comment about Jennifer Lawrence, but probably if she wasn’t pleased, Collins would have said something much more ambiguous like, “Oh, I’m sure she’ll be fine” or declined to comment. It seems unlikely that she would give such a glowing recommendation without meaning it.

Do some of you not realize that half the actors on television and movies playing “high schoolers” are in there twenties. Rarely is anyone the age they play on tv. Look at Diane Argron from Glee, She’s 24 and passes. Besides Katniss is very mature and has had a hard life so she it needs to be someone that can carry that. I loved Hailee too but I like Jennifer for it too. It could be A LOT worse.

Well, if Suzanne has such lovely things to say, I’ll have to at least go and see it. But it depends on who plays Peeta. Honestly, I’d rather have the characters brought to life by the acting rather than what the actors/actresses look like. Truth is, she’s not going to please everyone that is a fan of the Hunger Games. There will be her supporters, and her opposers. Sure, she doesn’t look anything like Katniss. I see that a lot of people are putting that hair-dye and tans and colored contacts can’t change a thing. But they can! Even a wig. Look at Danielle Chuchran, who portrayed Katniss on the Youtube video “Katniss and Rue” (look it up if you haven’t seen it). She looks considerably less pale and that wig is amazing. Imagine that wig on Jennifer, only as hair dye. Just another point from a random fan. (;

@Liz You are totally right. I think the point that you’re trying to make that people don’t get is that this is a book adaption. Not every character is exactly the same as in the book. Katniss being a little sexier isn’t the end of the world. She’s not going to be walking around the arena in pumps and red lipstick, guys. Lionsgate knows what they’re doing. I’m happy! I think JL will pull off Katniss perfectly. And for those people who are whining about her being pale and blonde, I’m sure she’s going to dye her hair and get a tan. It’s not a huge deal, so I don’t get the bellyaching. And in Hollywood, casting a 20 year old as a teenager is actually kinda on the young side. Most people are like in their mid to late twenties playing teens. There are all kinds of reasons (like child labor laws, media perception). Hailee could have been great…if only she was a few years older. Maybe they can still find a part for her.

WOW! CeazarSalad is right. There really is no pleasing some people! But the haters and forever negative nancy’s would be protesting and complaining no matter who got the role….
Now I know, some of you who are against this choice are chosing not to believe that Suzanne Collins meant what she said about Jennifer Lawrence. But this is an author who is relatively quite about certain aspects about her books as to questions such as “what happens to Gale after book 3?” or choosing not to list her vision of a dream cast. So why NOW, after all this time would she make something up about her feelings just to be PC? Just doesn’t seem to fit with her statements or lack of statements from the past. Plus, if you read it correctly, she says “I never thought WE’D find somebody this perfect for the role”. She said WE’D not THEY. To me, this sounds like she had some say/influence in the decision. And lets not forget, Susanne has worked in television before and so she knows how the casting/transforming part of an actor works. Not to mention the talent!
As for the age thing, Katniss, while being physically 16, is not going to look like a 16 year old looks today. She’s gonna look older. Her hard life of being poor and basically being the head of the family from such a young age will make her look a lot older than a cushy 16 year old in today’s world. Its a fact that strife ages you, so I think they did just fine in casting Miss Lawrence.

I think she’ll do great. As it has been pointed out by many people, hollywood make-up and such will make her who the DIRECTOR wants her to be. You are not the one filming it. If you want, direct it yourselves. Please stop complaining and give support to the actress, author and director. LIZ is right. This *is* a business and there are other things to consider aside from talent. Whoever they get needs to be not only talented but also marketable. The movies will have a better draw if they have an older actress who can look hot on the red carpet but normal on screen. It’ll expand the demographic and not limit the watchers to just fans of the books.
I for one love her b/c she’s so Katnissy, even in real life. Sure, she doesn’t LOOK much like Katniss, but when I hear her talk in interviews it’s like hearing a (happier) Katniss talk. Plus she was AMAZING in Winter’s Bone.

If Suzanne Collins, the AUTHOR and creator and the one who birthed Katniss into the world of literature says that she is perfect for the role, then who are we to say that she’s wrong? If you don’t trust the Lionsgate production team then above anything else, you SHOULD trust Suzanne Collins!
To say that the very author of her own character has no idea what she’s talking about is just downright insulting and condescending. If SC says that Jen is perfect, then Jen is PERFECT, and we are in no position to judge.
We are readers and fans, and while we do have some authority, I think the author has more. Everyone trust SC and her decision to say that Jennifer is perfect, sit back, and let the actress do her thing!

Other than appearance, Jennifer Lawrence appears flawless in terms of acting. I’m going to watch Winter’s Bone first before I comment on her acting for real, but from what I read, most of the credit for Winter’s Bone critical appeal goes to Jennifer Lawrence’s acting skill. Also, it saddens me that people considers her as the worst choice ever. You guys seriously don’t know how bad this could have been. Sure her appearance doesn’t match up, but in the end I believe acting trumps physical appearance.

While Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress, I personally do notnthink she is right for the part. Now I know she can dye her hair, get contacts and use makeup to darken her skin. In fact, she better do that or the entire fan world will kill her. The problem I have is with her age.
The hunger games are centered around a reality tv show where children become murderers. The key word in that sentence is children. Jennifer is an adult. And yes, adults do play teenagers on tv all the time. But those are shows like Glee, and they have nothing in common with the hunger games. Overall, shes too old. This just dissent sit well with me.

@Alex i completely understand why you would have a problem with her age and i have a feeling you read my comment from earlier because you mentioned glee, but please remember my other example of ralph macchio. he played a 16 year old kid who killed someone by an accident and was on the run and got deathly injured from a church fire in the outsiders, and he (ralph macchio) was 22!! and patrick swayze (may he rest in peace )’: ) was 31 when he was in that movie and his character was supposed to be 20!! (he was born in ’52 and the movie was in ’83, so… well, yeah) and he played a pretty intense part. the whole movie was intense.
i think i may have made my point.
and @Elle, although i’m over this now, i think by the whole starving to death thing is mainly about her chest. in my mind, katniss had a pretty flat chest, and jennifer has more of an average chest.

The problem isnt if Jennifer Lawrence can act, she can, or if they can make her look 16, they will. The problem is that the most compelling part of the books is that she faced so much at the age of 16. Is loses realism this way. As an example take Hailee Steinfeld out of True Grit and put a 20 year old playing younger in her role. Part of the charm of Mattie was that she was played by a 14 year old.

I just read an interview with Gary Ross and I am now won over on why they picked an older actress. Yes, Katniss is young and in the book, the age has a lot to do with the meaning of the book–they’re going through what they go through at that tender age. However, in the real world, we won’t find a young actress that can fully understand and ‘bring across’ the emotions and afflictions with the movie.

AT ALL. if you know anything about bmi (if you don’t, look it up), her weight is well in the healthy range. for those who do know about it. her bmi (i think, either that or it’s around there) is 20.7. i do agree katniss should look a bit more like she’s starving, but in my opinion that would mean either casting someone who hasn’t gone through puberty yet or casting alyson stoner (they have pretty flat you knows, which means skinny, in case you’re wondering why i mentioned them).

It’s pretty clear that Hailee was considered for the part, and she wasn’t chosen. That means she wasn’t right for the part for some reason, a reason that probably would have been obvious to us if they went ahead and casted her anyway.

@:’( well, they will for sure dye her hair, and they might do the contacts. that might not work, though, because they did that with daniel radcliffe and discovered he was allergic to them, but it’ll probably work. it’s not a big chance that it wouldn’t work. but really, why complain!? they’ve already cast her. we just have to look at the positives, like the fact that they’re making progress with the cast now.

I’m okay with it. At least it wasnt someone horrible like Miley Cyrus or something. The only thing I DONT like is that she looks too old. Katniss is supposed to be young looking and small. I’m not too upset but she’s not my first choice.

Flashback moment! The casting of the leads in both Harry Potter and Twilight upset many. But everyone ended up loving them. So could you just watch the movie? I bet you anything you’ll fall in love with her and start acting hypocritical.

I dont think jennifer would make a good katniss cause in the book it described her as having brown eyes and brown hair and i find jennifer looks to pretty to be katniss

Do you know how WRONG that sounds? OH my God. If she’s a good actress, that’s ALL that matters. Make-up teams and costuming make her “look” the part, guys. Just because she’s pretty doesn’t mean she can’t play Katniss.
I’m very happy with these choices.

I think a big important part of how the reader perceives the book is not taken into account. Writer in this case doesn’t matter. We read a book and get a mental image of what is happening, the way we see the characters plays a very important role in overall perception of the events. If the character is described as a slender, dark, bony and rather small girl and an actress cast for the role is a complete opposite, it creates quite a disparity with this image formed in reader’s mind. This is a red flag right there for Director’s ability to communicate. He is not very good at it. The movie won’t be good either. All the people in the village don’t look doing too bad, judging by the trailer I’ve seen. It doesn’t look like they need any “Hunger Games”, they all look like they just stepped out of an expensive sushi bar and are totally content with life. I consider this very important, because where you part with reality and fail to create a similarity to a reality, you fail to relay any interesting and valuable communication to your viewers. Director that doesn’t understand it, or doesn’t care, waving a flag of “artistic license” is a failure. The movie will probably be “ok”, but really nothing special, for sure.
