Lionsgate emailed these quotes to us!
“When I read the book, I thought Peeta would be the hardest role to cast, and I feel so lucky that we found someone who embodies every aspect of such a complex character. I can’t wait to work with Josh.”
- The Hunger Games director Gary Ross
“I was fortunate enough to be in the room with Gary Ross when Josh came in to audition. Three lines into the read I knew he’d be fantastic. Josh totally captured Peeta’s temperament, his sense of humor and his facility for language. I’m thrilled to have him aboard.”
- The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins
“Gale is a young man who uses words very sparingly, so the onus was on the actor we cast to capture him by showing, not telling. This was accomplished so beautifully in Suzanne’s writing, and Liam was able to translate it so naturally to the screen. At the same time, Gale’s journey across the three books transforms him, and Liam’s performance left no doubt that he would take us there. ”
-The Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson
I trust that they want to make the best movie possible, and made the decisions accordingly.

Im still a little sceptical, but once a trailer is made i’m sure my mind will be changed

I think that they will all do an amazing job! Based on these descriptions of their auditions I have total faith in them. I definitely feel as though Suzanne and the others know what they are doing.

Okay then. Maybe they won’t be so bad. ![]()

i’m not that really into the cast… well, i just hope the actors can do the movie justice… so excited…

I still think Josh Hutcherson looks like a used car salesman blonde.
So Liam Hemsworth had a great audition by barely saying anything.
“Liam’s performance left no doubt that he would take us there”
Whatever. Gale barely shows up in the first movie anyway. If his past movies show Liam’s terrible acting then he has time to improve himself.

These were my choices to begin with, maybe I have a future in casting! Yayy!

I don’t understand the big problem with Josh Hutcherson. The kids seems to be a flexible actor, espeacially after last night sat down and watched the Kids are alright. Some people also say they don’t want a bleached blonde actor…I say screw the changing of appearances. The fact that peeta is a blonde does not affect his characterization at all. So it’s seems irrelevant to make an actor change his appearance just to satisfy fans…when they will never be satisfied.
I’m looking forward to the first trailer.

Just make a good movie. That’s all I’m asking for ![]()

They have my consent
Suzanne Collin’s is especially reassuring, since we’ve all been a little iffy if Josh could really be the Peeta we all love. But watching his interviews, I’m totally floored and support Lionsgate’s decision.

Oh yes! I can’t wait to see a trailer!! This movie is going to rawk!!

I trust Collins and her statements as those characters are her babies. Therefore I totally believe her statement about Jennifer and Josh. They’ll do a great job!
However Collins and Ross missing statement in regards to Liam ‘speaks’ volumes. Him being quiet apparently got him the part…. WOW!

Hearing the comments made me feel a little better but im still a little sceptical as well at how the movie turns out

Reading this made me really excited. I can’t wait for the movie to come out! It sounds like they will do an amazing job.

Is funny that Suzanne is the one who made the statement about the casting choice of Peeta. I think if she keep it real I could respect more but with 3 lines he captured Peeta when he doesn’t even look ANYTHING like the character she create. Imagine that some white guy is selected to play Mathir Luther King and the team production tell the audience: “he captured the temper of MLK” it will be sounds ridiculous and it will show that there is no respect for the audicence. That is how I feel. If they keep it real and tell the audience it will be much better. The real thing is that Suzanne is very happy $$$ and she dosen’t care about the movie reflects the canon and it shows is the decisions that are been made.

If says a lot that Collins said that about Josh. I really hope he can do justice to the character.

This just serves to confirm my suspicion that they casted the wrong Gale. The producer makes it sound like they were merely looking for a guy who physically looked good that way even though he doesn’t say or do much the fan girls will still swoon. Great. Just great. Gale may be more the silent type but he doesn’t just sit there to be admired! I really want to hear Sizanne Collins opinion of Liam. Until then I’m completely and 100% against that casting choice.

When I first heard the casting, I was kinda outraged, couldn’t stop shouting “NO!” at my laptop. Just repeated it over and over again, but I’ve come round to Josh playing Peeta. I’ll reserve final judgement when I see him as he will look in the film. As for Liam… we’ll see.

I’m still shaking my head about Liam, I don’t fully understand what they were thinking when they chose him. But I’m willing to give him a chance.
I’m happy with Josh, and of course Jenn.
0

I’m so confident that they’ll do well. Well, Josh. Not sure about Liam though. But I love Josh, I know he’ll ace this.
And Doxys, what do you mean? Your statement makes no sense.

This is so perfect, now i see josh as peeta, liam is fine i just imagined his hair to be longer though and perfect with Jen as well.

Sorry I was so sleepy when I wrote my first comment that is was a mess, let me try to explain my point again.

What I tried to say is that if Suzanne kept it real and told the fandom that she is happy ($$$$) with the deal she made with the movie production even though the character casting is not accurate with the characters of the books; I could respect her much more. But I feel they’re trying to sell us something that doesn’t make sense. I really think Josh is an amazing actor, BUT he doesn’t even look like the character we portrait at all. My example was this: imagine that some movie production will make a movie about the life of Martin Luther King and they cast a white guy and then they tell the audience who believed it’s a bad decision: “this X actor captured the TEMPERAMENT of Martin Luther King”. The audience will think is wrong because he didn’t look like the character he will play. The same principal applies on this casting. I admire Meg Cabot so much because when someone asked her WHY she let Disney change the canon of her books so much her reply was: “they paid me a LOT of money”. I think if they were less cocky and tell the fandom that they know they changed something but they really wanted to give us a GREAT movie, it will be MUCH better, but they are trying to convince us of something that 90% of the fandom doesn’t like. It’s like they believe that US who read the book long before Garry can’t get the story like he does. Again keep it real.

I’m okay with the decision now. If the movie’s good and the actors are amazing, then I am happy. =D
For some reason Josh’s picture kinda reminds me of Tom Felton and I like it. A LOT. Sorry, I just have this large infatuation on Felton along with musical guys (who sing tenor/ baritone)

@ Doxys – I basically agree with what you’re saying, but you might want to take into consideration the fact that copious amounts of hair dye, makeup, and probably contact lenses will be used. Think of Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) – she cut her hair super short and in the 7th movie, could anyone tell that she wore a wig? No.
Anyways, I was very skeptical about both acting choices. I haven’t seen The Last Song, and everyone I know is very cynical about Liam as Gale, but I don’t know. He seems all right for the role. I’m still kind of upset about Josh, just because I was rooting for Hunter Parrish, but I must say – these quotes made me feel a lot more optimistic about everything! I am changing my mind.
Still, until they make a trailer, I will continue to be undecided.

peeta looks creepy, gale looks too old, but now i can totally see JLaw as katniss!!! hurray for hair dye, contacts, and movie editing!!!

@ RipRedtheGnawer-
actually, emma didnt cut her hair untill after filming was over. thats her real hair…

I hope they realize that Gale does more than just sit there and look pretty. I know he’s not in the first book very much, but he is in 2 and 3. Liam better be able to pull it off or I will be MOST upset. And I hope they don’t get him only to be in this one and then change to a different actor for the next 2. I want consistancy, so they better make sure they chose right! *isteamgale*

If they give us a fantastic movie I then might change my mind about the casting choices…..

Acting can be taught. Something that can’t be taught is that certin something that makes them the characters. NONE of them have. I understand that Suzanne HAS to say that she likes the cast. Are they going to dye this kids hair? No one ever said that they will.

feeling better about their decision. hopefully they won’t let us down.

Those images are making me feel good about this movie. Jennifer looks amazing, just as i pictured Katniss, Gale looks fine.
Josh looks awful. Sorry.
0
0
Meh, sorry, but I won’t take their words for it this time. Jen looks great, but everyone else… no, just no. Josh looks so wrong, and Liam is starting to remind me FAR too much of Jacob from Twilight.
ugh, screw this.

Amazing. This is so reassuring. They actually look like the characters. Still a little spectacle about gale but according to Nina he is great so I am all better. Now I cant wait!

They can’t all make millions of dollars like the Twilight movie I guess. Rob and Kristen, I could just by looking at them side that they had chemisty. I’m not feeling it with Josh and Jennifer. HOWEVER I’m feeling the chemisty between Jennifer and Liam. WHICH is not good.

you know i like liam as gale i’ve always seen gale in him does that make me weird but i still don’t see josh as peeta i know his a good actor and that he’ll do peeta tons of justice but it’s the hair and eyes that make me a non belive if he was born blond and blue eyed i would be totally fine and ready to wet myself (i know i’m crazy)for this movie but he just looks the total oppsite of peeta
MJ has spoken
team peeta/sort of josh

katniss or jen and gale or liam look so right for their roles in the movie but peeta or josh looks like an outsider him he looks really weird next to jen i don’t see the chemisty at all with jen and josh

still not sure about josh for the role of peeta but if suzanne collins is excited with the casting then i’ll keep an open mind

I actually really like the manip shown here!
This one makes Josh look less creepy than the last (though I still think it’s the blue eyes that make him look slightly off), and the blonde hair is looking better.
Also, while I’m still undecided on how well Liam can actually act, I think this picture looks more Gale like than others I’ve seen of him, hopefully he looks similar to this in the film!
0
0
I agree. I mean, they wouldn’t go out of their way to sing these guys’ praises. They could go all top-secret on us and only talk to us when apologizing for leaked pictures of the set.

i love that katniss and gale or jen and liam look like their from the seam like really tough and like if you mess with me i’ll cut your head off with a butter knife i really love that

I fell in love with Gale in the first book! I think he is so important – but I’m afraid by casting Liam – who doesn’t say much – they have reduced the Gale character to almost nothing.
The photo shopped pic of Josh does NOT help his cause. He still looks awful – but with Peeta – acting and chemistry are more important. I hope he does well with the part! And – I would take anything Suzanne Collins says in regards to the movie with a healthy dose of skeptisim. She would never say anything bad. She is doing her job promoting the film.

Okay, explain to me how you know someone is perfect after only reading three lines? Seriously? You know after three lines he has the complete depth and range required for the role of Peeta? Sorry, but I don’t buy it. I was totally on board with Jennifer, but that quote about Josh just made me roll my eyes. It would take more than three lines to convince me as an author, that an actor is worthy of playing the role of a character I created. Personally, I would have felt more comfortable if she had said that they had put him through the ringer and had him read an interview scene and he did a scene with JLaw and a scene from the arena and he nailed every single one of them, then I would say, okay I feel good about it. But three lines? C’mon, three lines doesn’t tell us anything.

well i am warming up to them, still dont love them. But i will save my finnal judgements untill after i see the move, that means eaither loving or hating them- because i have feeling that it will be a bit hit or huge miss. no inbetween. we need a podcast on the new casting, WHERE ARE YOU JABBERJAYS?

I agree Kimmy! I think they picked the right people and I’m way excited to see the movie! I’d feel the same way if they picked Hunter too. I trust Gary Ross and I don’t think he’s taking this lightly ![]()

@Ann: I agree. I feel like Josh was an impulse buy that is following a disturbing trend: having received a recent Oscar nod and/or is appealing to the teeny-bopper crowd.
Also, to those that are immediately appeased by Ross/SC’s praises: what, exactly, would they say otherwise? “Well, they were alright, I guess, but we needed to hire someone so…” I’m not so easily convinced, and even if they turn out to be okay I doubt I’ll EVER be okay with this casting. Call it a mixture of being extremely skeptical of Josh/Liam and still being even more bitter that Hunter Parrish wasn’t cast. ![]()
In any case, it’s sad because I’ve really lost a lot of enthusiasm for this movie. I had high hopes that were quite violently dashed.
0
0
Also, I hate that apparently physical likeness to the roles was irrelevant. Come on, there NEEDS to be a blend, not just acting ability.
0
0
I wouldn’t quite say Suzanne Collins wrote beautifully… :S The story itself was, but the writing style? Erm… no. Hardly Gone With The Wind.
I’m not bashing SC, just Nina Jacobson’s choice of words.

People who cares about the movie in the end the books are what matters that’s what started the whole thing so just deal wit it
0

@PDK I agree with everything you said. People are so easily swayed by a few generic statements. Those involved in making the movie (and Collins) are not going to come out and say “Awful casting choices, terrible, don’t see this movie!”
0
0
Obviously people can still have their opinions about if they like the person or not. And you can question Gary for the casting decisions. But it makes no sense to question Suzanne’s choices! These are her characters!!! If he thinks Josh is perfect for Peeta then he must be! After all, she is the only one who truly knows the characters. We only have our own interpretations on them.
And I am all for Josh being cast, but with blonde hair I feel like he kinda looks like a tool. I guess will just have to hair how it really looks. But I have a feeling they may just keep him with brown hair.

@Katara
Nina Jacobson wasn’t talking about Suzanne Collin’s writing style. She was referring to Gale’s character.

at first i was VERY upset with the actors cast. all three of them. but after seeing these images, and reading what the important people had to say i’m slightly reassured, but not completely.

I hope you guys know chemistry isn’t how they look together…it’s how they act around each other and if they get along…just so ya know…and I’m happy with the casting choices
…just please make Josh grow his hair out or give him a wig then it’ll all be just fine ![]()

katniss and gale i can deal with this peeta is ewww. sry
and NOOOOOO i didn’t want him as peeta!!! (sry team peeta gale doesn’t matter to me…) i wanted lucas till. i’m not spoiled i’m very strong headed. i’m upset that they casted them- a death of another character- what i mean when i say this: there goes the imagination behind the books! you can see it die into the distance.

How does this letter sound?
I’m sure you guys are going to do a great job with this movie, however we the fans feel like you have miscast the roles for Katnis, Peeta, and Gale. Mainly, the role of Peeta. I’m sure Josh Hutcherson is great actor and a great guy, but from the work we have seen him do, he is not right for the role of Peeta. I COMPLETELY understand that you can’t make everybody happy, but we feel like you have been ignoring us the fan who have read the books countless times. We the fans DO know who will be right in the roles too. I KNOW Suzanne Collins had a role in casting, but I also know that Suzanne can’t say anything bad about the cast either. She has an opinion, but It’s not the final call. In closing I would just like restate that we know that you want to make the best movie you can. But PLEASE listen to the fans.

lol, I trust them and really people, why make judgments that the movie is gonna be horrible before it even comes out? How the heck do do you know? Just because the actors chosen don’t look like your mind image of the charactors? I honestly believe that the movie is going to be really good and thats largely in part because these people ^^ didn’t listion to the fan base who were yelling out actors who looked like the characters (in their own mind) because yeah then it would have been a crappy movie because although you would have had a bunch of pretty faces, like Kaya Scolendrio and Alex Pettyfer, it wouldn”t be the story because they won’t be able to actually act these complex characters we have in the book.
A book and a movie have to be looked at as two different things; they will make these three main charactors look like the characters (and in any case everyone’s mind image of the characters is different anyways, you can’t please everybody) but first and foremost is the fact that the resident experts in charge of these film as well as the creator of these very characters we fell in love with believe that these are the best fits for the job. I trust them and I’m really looking forward to the movie. Hey who knows, maybe it’ll suck but I won’t decide that until I actually see the movie.
0

I was already happy with the casting decision but just assures me even more. And people who are still whining about the casting, GET OVER IT. Why would SC lie? Of course she would know how her own characters are supposed to be.
0
0
@Lynn: I agree.
@Lori: Because she doesn’t want this movie to flop and is going to sing the praises of anyone cast. Seriously, I was behind Jen, but Josh does NOT fit the role of Peeta, and Liam is quite simply a horrid actor.
And no, those of us genuinely upset will not just “get over it.” We are angry. We are hurt. Especially those of us who had their hearts foolishly set on someone that would have been PERFECT.
It’s frustrating that we as the fans are not being listened to.
0

I really don’t understand why so many of you are ready to bash these actors without having seen their auditions. “Dream Casting” and “Fantasy Casting” is exactly what it implies… your fantasy or dream. The most important thing is that the AUTHORS vision is accurate. Not our own ideas. I think people should stop acting as if this has ruined the movie as a whole. Fans fell in love with the story and it’s characters. We have yet to see how these characters are going to be brought to life. Please set aside your own casting fantasies and allow the producers to work their magic.

I am so freaking exited for this movie!!! I CAN NOT WAIT! Ok the pics there is not how they are going to look it probably just fan art. So calm down. I really like Josh being Peeta i think he is perfect. I am starting to like Jenn and as for gale… well ya now i’m going to the hanging tree on that one. HORRIBLE. But I LOVE EVERYTHING ELSE!!! I don’t buy this crap. While I adore JLaw for Katniss and I don’t mind Liam as Gale (except that he looks almost 30 but watever i don’t care about that) I can’t stand that they chose Josh for Peeta. I have always disliked him as an actor and it saddens me that my least favorite actor is going to play my most favorite character. I hate how some people say that people who dislike this decision only does because he doesn’t fit the physical description of Peeta, because what bugs me about this decision mostly is the person as an ACTOR. Not just his appearance. Good riddance, I cringe everytime i think of him doing Hijacked Peeta from Mockingjay. Have you seen Josh in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant? *cringes* Sure I’ll wait for the trailer, but I don’t believe that anything is going to change my perception on Josh- I’ve seen plenty of his movies. Not even all these fanmades graphics, they make me like him even less.
BTW can’t wait to know who will play Haymitch. They better not disappoint. coughRDJcough ![]()

I’m not really into this cast. I don’t like Liam for the part I think that they did a terrible job with choosing Gale. I’m ok with Josh but he looks really weird as a blonde. I would’ve picked an entirely different cast. I wish Alex Pettyfer was chosen instead for Peeta I’m just sayin. Hopefully the actors will do the movie justice because the book was AMAZING AND FANTASTIC!! ![]()

Hey guys, I seriously doubt Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins sat there and thought, “Hmm, Hunter Perrish and Alex Pettyfer were REALLY good in their auditions, but just to be stupid, lets cast Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and ruin the movie!” Same with Jennifer Lawrence. So drop your pride and deal with the fact that your fantasy guy wasn’t chosen. It obviously wasn’t a good fit.
0
0
i thought gary ross said he was going to get the characters to look as close to the book as possible or something to make the fans happy and that he’d listen to the fans a little and make them happy. he obviously lied since all of the actors need work done which will probably end up looking fake, and the fans are really angry. i’m really disappointed. everyone is saying they’re trusting suzanne collins but i’m sure the twilight fans trusted stephanie meyer too, and look at twilight
0

Also, just a heads up. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not expect Robert Downey Jr. to be cast as Haymitch! The guy is WAY too famous to be in this movie. It’s just not going to happen. So don’t cry when he isn’t cast.

@ Cookie Monster- I am a huge fan and I totally love that Josh Hutcherson was cast as Peeta! So Gary Ross does listen to his fans ![]()

Every time they cast a new character, all the fans blow up and then collins calms us down by writing another letter. how long will this go on? i really don’t see either of these actors as the characters because they look nothing like Peeta and Gale! I was really looking foward to this movie but with every announcement i’m getting less and less excited.
0
0
@ Rachel- yes i understand that there are josh fans but i’m talking about the majority of the fans.
0
0
@Yenna: Oh yes, because the fact that I am not gullible enough to believe everything the higher-ups say and am critical of their choices (as is the majority of the fandom) means I am just “being negative.” Get real.
@Hellen: I agree completely. While Josh’s physical appearance is a MAJOR issue for me, another qualm I have with him is the fact that he just doesn’t feel like Peeta. He’s not organic. And I am heartbroken also that my favorite character is going to be played by someone so… unlike him.
Sigh. This is what I get for setting my heart completely on Hunter.

@ Anonymous- yeah me too. i’m not super excited for the movie anymore. now i kinda wish that they didn’t make it and we just had the books because i’m getting disappointed with the casting.

@ ANN
THEY SAID THREE LINES INTO THE READ.
His audition considted of more than just three lines, so calm down.
I think alot of people need to step out of the box. I won’t like, none of the actors picked were of my first choices – but this is no longer a who should get the role debate. They have offically been cast, whats done is done – we cant judge what they will bring to the movie UNTIL WE SEE THE MOVIE.
Lets have a little faith.

DOXYS:
Your whole comment is ridiculous. What Peeta looks like has nothing to do with his character. He could be black, and it still wouldn’t change what his purpose is in the story. Josh Hutcherson was cast because the director, and producers clearly felt that he captures the spirit of Peeta.
The whole Martin Luther King Jr. analogy, ummm….that would matter in a film. It affects his purpose, not to mention that he is a historical figure.
It seems a little over dramatic of you to bring that in…since it is irrelevant.
Actually, everyone is being overly dramatic.
“MY LIFE IS OVER.”
Um…The first clip of the movie hasn’t even come out yet…they haven’t even started filming…

i don’t know. when i first saw who would play peeta and gale i freaked out. when i see the picture above i’m feeling a bit better. but i’m still quite uncertain.

Ok I have a few things to say. first @Doxys your example of Martin L. King is very extreme. Had they cast a black girl for katniss then I think it would be more appropriate but i personally think it’s foolish. and they obviously know they changed things i mean they are the ones that cast them. people make changes all the time to try to make it work which is why scenes get cut that were in the book and dont make it to the movie. and for you to speak on behalf of suzanne is just wrong. gary knows how important this is to everyone especially suzanne which is why he’s had her at the auditions and he last said that before casting jennifer he talk extensively with her which i’m sure they did the same for these two. just because one author is a sell out to their book doesnt mean they all will be. i imagine suzanne probably made sure she would have a good amount of say in things before choosing what company and what director would direct her movie.
@LYNN you say that NONE of them have what it takes to bring these characters to life but how do you know that whoever you wanted in the roles did? you did not see their auditions and even if they did good they obviously got out performed. none of us really know who would be best in the roles as we are not professionals and were not involved in the casting. we can only make judgements based on appearances. never judge a book by its cover, the best looking person could be the biggest flop and then you’d be even more pissed. all i have to say is suck it up and support the book you so called love.
@ANN lets be real, just because she said after three lines does not mean he literally online did three lines. geez dont people think. she was probably just using a figure of speech at how good he was. you cant expect them to give away all the details about how the audition process goes, and before anyway say “well we’re the fans so yes they should” well i’ve got news, you arent entitled to anything and should be grateful they are trying to make this a movie. and no i was not a supporter of them based on looks but auditions usually go the best fit wins. just be glad it’s not like the mortal instruments where the lead girl didnt even audition they just gave her the role and they are trying to give the role to alex pettyfer just cause he’s a fan fav…i personally think he is a one-dimensional actor but i could be wrong but if that movie fails it will partly be cause they didnt take time to hold auditions.

Since when is a movie as good as the book? I’m sure if Hunter Perrish were cast as Peeta, you’d find something else to complain about. I take it, you’re the kind of people who complain about everything. YOU”RE GETTING A MOVIE! Learn to take what life gives you and love it! You’re only ruining the experience for yourselves because you are choosing to.

I think Josh will do great as Peeta! Still not sure about Liam but hopefully he’ll be ok in the actual thing.
0

@Rachel: Honestly, if Hunter Parrish had been cast, that alone would have been enough for me, lol. That is where 95% of my pain is coming from (and the rest is quite simply that I don’t see Josh as Peeta). ;(
0
0
@Kaya-I agree. I wasn’t in love with them at first either, but I’m a FAN and I want to enjoy this movie so I’ve excepted it! This cast will not ruin it for me! Show some love people! Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. Suzanne Collins gave you the books and now she’s giving you who SHE (She being the one who wrote the characters) thinks fits the character rolls the best.

so has anyone heard any rumors about any possible haymitch actors???

Eh, looks really don’t matter to me because the idea portrayed in this book has nothing to do with how “cute” Peeta looks. So, as long as they can act well, I’ll be fine.

@SARA I’ve been trying to get people to think that way this whole time. the appearances are mentioned to give them a face it doesnt define who they are and make up their purpose in the story, if it did then i could understand the madness

Really, most of you guys are just really depressing me. “We fans know who is right for the role”. Who the hell do you think you are? You created the character? No. You know anything about the movie industry? No. So what is your expertise in this matter? Just reading the books doesn’t give you any right to decide what actors will be good for the roles. “Hunter Parrish would have been perfect”. How do you know? You haven’t seen his audition and you can’t only rely on his look and his previous movies. I know that SC and Gary Ross would never say that their cast is horrible. If it was the case and they didn’t care about the opinion of the fans, they would never take the time to explain how much they think the actors they picked can do justice to the characters. They would just tell us nothing. We all have an idea in mind of what the characters look/are like, but this vision is just only one in a million. EVERYBODY has a different vision of them, as well as the author. Why not calm down a bit and see what happen. It might suck, and honestly I think it will because translating a book in a movie is rarely done in a way that really please the fans, but at leat give them a chance.
I don’t wanna hurt nobudy with this comment, but some of you seem to have an ego way too big to think that the fans knows what to do with this movie just because we read those books…
0
0
@Sarah- Exactly! Why can’t people see that?! DUH! I have never pictured Peeta as a hottie. Only Gale, which IS how the book portrayed it!

I`ll wait until the movie comes out,but I don`t want Miley Cyrus or Vanessa Hughens any where near The Hunger Games.

@Doxys: It’s different when you’re talking about a possible racial change. Like if they cast a pale, blonde Rue, for example. But a brunette Peeta isn’t the same as a white Martin Luther…js.
I really hope these quotes change a lot of minds. I’ve been completely for Josh all the way. For this particular part, portraying himself with the right charisma and temperment is more important than his hair colour. In my opinion, his face is exactly like how I imagined Peeta. Cute, friendly, but not overly attractive or ‘hot’. I know Caesar Flickerman calls Peeta a ‘handsome young lad’ or something to that effect, but he is supposed to say that to everyone! It amazes me, how people always have to find something to criticize. There’s nothing anyone can do about it now, so we might as well accept it, and wait for the movie before we start talking about how horrible the actors are.

YEA @ Jen and Josh :S still unsure about liam but I’m not going to judge, only put faith in him and Lionsgate!

@Kaya
AMEN SISTER, you’re opinion is exactly identical with mine. i agree completely.
@Lynn
how can you begin your letter with “we the fans” if many of the fans are against what you’re saying? were you present at the auditions? NO. so how on earth do you know that josh is all wrong? you can’t just assume that josh won’t do peeta justice when you yourself have no idea what he could be capable of.
@anyone who is obsessed with hunter
open up your minds. what’s done is done. josh was better at peeta than him, suzanne could tell right away that this was the peeta she envisioned.
@anyone who is judging by looks
get a life. just because you pictured a character one way doesn’t mean they had to look exactly like that on screen.

How do you know what they are gonna do with Josh’s looks seriously? I’m not gonnna be one of those rude people (because there seem to be enough on here as it is) but honestly? we don’t know what they are gonna do so how bout we all just calm down about it and wait till we actually see the actors as they’ll look for the role? Don’t judge off of pictures that are simply photo shopped, and I know some of you think Josh won’t look good with blonde hair but honestly I’d rather have a blonde guy that isn’t totally gorgeous than have a brown haired Peeta, but besides the issue with the hair I love Josh and I trust lionsgate and I especially trust Suzanne who created these characters in the first place! That is all I’m going to say.

I’m terrified that they’ll mess up this movie with poor actors. Liam Hemsworth by all means is not fit, nor a proper character for Gale. Josh Hutcherson is an amazing actor. Other than his initial appearance, all is well with him. I was very skeptical about Jennifer Lawrence at first, mainly on her appearance. I have never seen her before in any movies. Hopefully Suzanne Collins hasn’t completely lost her mind and made the right choice in who plays The Girl Who was On Fire. Let’s just pray these casting directors do their job right. If this movie goes bunk due to their poor choice in actors, the movie, and there career’s, will most likely go bunk as well. I’ve got my finger’s crossed.

@doxy how can you say that he looks nothing like the character when your projection of him is subjective? I don’t remember there being that much facial feature description for that to be an accurate claim.
@anonymous there is no use telling this group of people to calm down. This message board has a fairly positive reacton but most of the others are nothing but hate-filled people. This is honestly the worst fandom out there because no one supports the work that the people involved in the project are doing.
Congratulations to Jennifer, Josh, and Liam I know you’ll do great.

Come on guys do you really think we are going to get Robert Downy Jr. as Haymitch or Kristen Chenoweth as Effie, and other fan favs? I originally thought that Gary Ross and co. respected the fans, but I have come to the conclusion that he really doesn’t. I also can see that he has had these roles cast for a long time and nothing that we say is going to change that. I would bet money that the other four guys up for the role Peeta were just for show.
THG has always been about organic, vivid characters and now all three main actors are going to be far from natural (hair color/color contacts). I deeply saddens me that Gary Ross was so willing to disappoint a majority of the fans.

@Bri
I agree fully.
They’re definitely not going to get RDJ, he’s going to cost them WAYYYY TO MUCH. They’ve only got 60 million to spend and already have an oscar nominated star, a distinguished actor, and a famous guy. Also, they’ve got an oscar nominated set designer. They’ve got no more money to spend on his HUGE paycheck.
Kristen Chenoweth is totally not going to be picked. If he turned down Hunter Parrish, they’ll turn down her.
And I totally agree with everything else too.

@ASHLEY Exactly. Super hate filled comments, and i am utterly disappointed in all of the fans. When it comes down to how some people are insulting the author, without whom there would be no story, then that’s when you know that there are problems.

@BRI …-____________________-
Why would he pick someone who is loved by the fans, but doesn’t fulfill the part, versus someone who the fans hate but who is perfect at the part, and someone whom the fans can grow to love?
I hope they paint them blue. Screw their appearances. I’m betting money their portrayals are going to be amazing. They beat out a bunch of other people.

In the fans. I’m disappointed in the fans. But not all the fans, naturally. Just the spiteful ones. U MAD? Too bad, don’t see the movie. There. Done. Sure, you CAN write about how much you hate Lionsgate and Josh and Liam and babies and unicorns and all the good things in the world. You have that right, sure. Will most people really care? Will the casting change? No. And no.
I thought Hunger Games fans were the cool ones.

Love that people are now talking like they know how much money ppl are being paid “They can’t afford Robert Downey Jr.” cause they would totally know this. psh ppl. and anyway they dont make most of their money from the budget anyhow and he’s not the lead so even if his asking price is usually1 million he would probably get a little less than that cause its a supporting role…and if he’d turn it down for reasons like that i personally wouldnt want him in the movie anyhow

Give them a change guys, geeze… Suzanne Collins made the right desicions, we warmed up to Jennifew right? And I warm up to these guys everyday, I had imagined Peeta to be cute, not some god, but cute, likeable. Josh dosent look like this. @KAYA Look, I’m not stupid, I know they didn’t have him read only three lines for his audition then give him the part. You are not me so please don’t ever presume to know what I’m thinking or what I am going to say.
I don’t expect to know every detail of the process, I was merely saying that her statement did not ease my concerns about their decision to cast Josh as Peeta. Sorry, but reading three outstanding lines does not prove worth to me. I would have rather heard her say that they threw scene after scene at him and he nailed every one and because of THAT he blew every other actor out of contention. We’ve all fallen in love with things at first glance, but it’s when things are truly tested that we know for sure they are what we want. I mean how many times did you just go gaga for something right on the spot but then after a while say to yourself “what the heck was i thinking?” That is why her statement doesn’t sit right with me. Everyone has their opinion and I think that’s great, but this is mine. I don’t appreciate getting reamed for it.
I apologize if I came across a bit jumbled and a bit emotional in my first post, but I was in a rush. I just… I’m really scratching my head with all this.

Okay, not to sound paranoid, but what’re they supposed to say. Are they going to be critical of their choices? No. They have to defend their choices. If not, why were the hired. They have a studio and investers to pacify. They’re chasing the almighty dollar. Yes, even the author.

Will everyone please stop saying Liam is a bad actor! I read Nicholas Sparks The Last Song and then saw the movie(which sucks b/c it left out too many important aspect and b/c MILEY CYRUS CANNOT ACT OR SING) but anyway Liam translated the character from the book to the movie PERFECTLY, he was the only great thing about that movie. If you read the book and saw the movie you would know what I was talking about.
NO MORE HATING ON LIAM’S ACTING CHOPS!

Peeta is suppose to be brave and sensitive and not 5’7!!! He is too short to play this part, i’m extremely disappointed in the choice, he doesn’t look the part for Peeta. I envisioned a handsome, stocky and like a big teddy bear. This guy is neither. YUCK!! And he is playing the main charcater. Unbelievable!!!Liam on the case is a perfect fit!! I can’t wait to see him and Gale isn’t even my fav Character. That’sd sad. GET RID OF THIS PEETA!!!!!

Wow. If I see anything it is how much everyone is invested in the book and movie. That should make Suzanne Collins happy. That said, I wasn’t overly thrilled when I heard Josh was cast as Peeta. I haven’t seen much with him, but what I have seen hasn’t shown a lot of depth of character. Whether that’s the roles he’s previously chosen or his acting ability, I’m not sure. I’m hoping it’s the roles… and that he can act. Peeta, for me, grows as much if not more than Katniss during the course of the 3 books. Whomever they cast has to be not just adequate, but GOOD! Hair and eyes are easy to fix. I am concerned about his build, though. He doesn’t look like he could heft 100 pound bags of flour. Or be charismatic enough to charm a nation… but again. Hopefully Suzanne and Gary Ross saw more in his audition than I’ve seen in past roles. As for Liam… I haven’t seen enough of his work to judge at all. I guess I’ll just have to hope for him as well.

MMM look I’m not a teenager pouting over the cast because they didn’t choose a teenage hearthrob for the role but I still believe Josh was a bad choice for several reasons.
1) Gary Ross has only directed two other movies and in both movies Tobey Maguire was the lead men. He has been very enthusiastic toward Josh since the beggining so I believe he must be the kind of actor he feels comfortable directing and he sort of remind me of Tobey in both demeanor and appearance. That doesn’t make Josh the right actor for Peeta.
2) Both of Gary Ross first movies gained positive reviews so he must be thinking about reviews rather than fans with the whole Hunger games process. He of course will be reducing the cast options or be proned to select people who have been involved with critical acclaim movies but that also reduce the options for him to choose someone who is right for the role without consuming more time in the search. That’s bad because since this is the only movie will get about HG the cast should have been taken more time and money including not hundreds but thousands of actors just like Harry potter cast.
3)This is not a series just for teenagers, older women will be watching too and we are a considerable part of the market. Although HG is not a love story the romance is crucial for us. I’m in my thirties but that doesn’t stop me from drooling over teen romance when the couple looks cute or the guy doesn’t look too young or fake blond
. Why do you think there are so many grown women attending twilight movies? Here I guess not many of us will be inspired for a Josh-Jennifer couple.I’m not saying Peeta has to be a stud with no acting skills but he has to be appealing for all audiences not just teenagers or movie experts. And even though this is not a romantic movie romance can do great things for movies like AVATAR and Harry potter and Lord of the rings(barely there and yet you feel the love inspire the audiences without turning the movie in a chick-flick)
4) With the opening day of HG scheduled for March next year is obvius they are running out of time. Usually when casted the actors have more time to prepare for their roles. The decision of going for Josh appears to be based not on he being the right one for the role but that he won’t delay the production due to any inexperience. I wish they had taken the time to cast an unknown GOOD LOOKING yet talented actor and gave him time to prepare for the role.
So my conclusion: They didn’t cast Josh for being the best for the part. They casted him because he was the only option with the deadline over their heads and because they are not aiming for pleasing the fan base of the book but for the critics to take the movie seriously.
I won’t see the movie unless I read good critics from people in this forum. The trailers and teaser I’m sure will be fantastic but I won’t be sure until the fans have their say.

@Myra- So what your saying is, Gary Ross is only interested in good reviews over what the fans want? So what your saying is that you don’t care if this movie gets bad reviews as long as the fans get the guy they want? Sounds like you just put your foot in your mouth. Gary Ross makes movies that receive good reviews. So people should trust Gary Ross!
Also, these actors have had plenty of time to prepare for this role. Josh obviously did the best job. You should never judge an actor by every role they’ve played. I swear, everyone who is upset about this is judging Josh based on his looks. Don’t people know that a great personality can make someone attractive? It happens ALL THE TIME in movies!

@ANN I was in no way shape or form pretending to know what you were thinking. I was simply going off of what you posted. I understand what you mean about falling in love with things at first sight and it’s hard not to when you’re already passionate about it. I’m just saying that your response to her statement which you again said the same thing seemed as if you believed josh got a short audition and everyone else was cheated. Her words were “Three lines into the reading” not “the reading only last three lines before we cast him” for all we know they did do all that stuff you suggested. They are very busy with production so we can’t expect them to give essays as to what happened step by step. Like that you’re passionate though, just trying to get people to be a little more supportive than they have been ![]()

I’m getting tired of all the complaining, especially since most of it is based on how the actors look. Appearance is something that can be easily changed. I think it’s more important that they cast someone that portrays the character the bast rather than who looks most like the character. I highly doubt that they would cast people that were not suitable, especially when the actual author seemed to have an input. She’s the one who created the characters so she must know who’s best. We have no idea what happened in the audition so I don’t think it’s fair to judge. Everyone had their dream cast and the moment their favorite person wasn’t cast, people lost it. I admit, I wanted Hunter to be Peeta but I also knew that there was the chance that he wouldn’t get the part, and that’s exactly what happened. I was disappointed at first but now I’m feeling better. Some of you guys need to relax and have some confidence. I can’t believe some people are actually refusing to see the movie because of this. I’m going to wait until I see the trailer and the actual movie to make my judgments.

@Myra
No matter what you think, the director always puts his/her heart and soul into a movie. The director would not make judgements based off of what type of actor he likes (which is impossible to find out in auditions, which are about a minute or two long) or what he thinks will get the best reviews. Also, the director doesn’t make the decisions, he only puts out his opinion and then the casting director decides, whether it was the director’s choice or not.
Please think about things before you write them down because you sound like a bitter housewife. And I don’t mean that rudely, It’s just that your opinions are not going to change the decisions made and I (personally) like to keep the comment section a happy and peaceful place and not full of hate comments and actor wars.
(And some people may interpret this comment wrong, but I meant for it to not come off snarkily/rudely)

I am happy they had Peeta and Gale and is ready to move on to other characters. I might have doubts about whether they are suitable but I strongly believe while appearances can be altered, chemistry, talent and ability to portray the characters cannot be faked. The production team so far has been alright. Getting the author involved, choosing award nominated actress, set designer, producer etc shows they are serious about this. I shall sit on the fence for now until I had watched the movie.
Some people annoys me though by being outright bashing. Sure, you might not like their choices but I don’t think there’s a need to say they are ugly. terrible etc. I have seen a lot of nasty comments on these related articles and I am ashamed that people who claimed they love the books are being so downright nasty. We have not even seen anything like a trailer, pictures of them in the getup etc. Is there a need to be so agitated?

i like Liam as Gale and he seems to match up well with Jen, Josh im on the fence about….
but im not bothered by any of this casting news until the final product comes out.
people who keep bitching and moaning about “he is the wrong Peeta/Gale” need to let it go. if you have such strong issues/dislike of the actors cast, dont see the film, that simple.
i agree with @ Vanora about people outright bashing the actors with nasty comments. so you dont agree with it, there is no need to be cruel and stress out about it.
personally, i dont really have high expectations of the film (i expect to enjoy it though) because film adaptations rarely do books justice and seeing as it will be PG-13 makes me think alot will be toned down to appease the younger audience but the books shock factor was its brutality so i am apprenhensive about how that will be dealt with

I do think that these people could make a great movie and I don’t doubt their ability to act, I just really hope that the manuscript is good and that they get the essense of the books. I’m totally ëxcited about the movie though!

@KAYA Obviously you didn’t read my post and you are presuming to know what I think.
I repeat I am not stupid and don’t think they only gave him a three line audition then gave him the part and I certainly don’t think they treated the other actors unfairly. I never said anything of the sort. I would appreciate it if you would stop analyzing my posts and again presuming what I think. If you don’t like what I say, ignore it, and don’t accuse me of things I did not say.
I have a problem with Suzanne’s statement. Simple as that. Sorry, but it does not ease MY uncertainty in casting Josh as Peeta. Maybe she was just being flippant and just trying to cite it as an example to falling in love. Like, I knew the moment I saw him I loved him… But to be honest when it comes to casting movies, that doesn’t work and that’s why this quote bothers me. It’s more like he’s a shiny new toy she had to have rather than an actor that had to work hard to get the part.
I’m sure he read more scenes, as did everyone who auditioned, but if she was going to say anything about the process, I would have rather heard about how he nailed ALL his scenes rather than just the first three lines. That’s all I’m saying.

I will be 100% happy with this casting choice (despite them not being my first choices) once Gary Ross/Lionsgate releases a statement saying the actors will be physically transformed in to the characters. For now, there is no guarantee that we won’t have a blonde Gale and Katniss and a dark-featured Peeta. For me, the physcial aspect is a HUGE part of these characters. Peeta’s light features paralleled the “hope” he gave Katniss, from the dandilion, through the Hunger Games, and in the end, why she ultimately chose him (because she would choose who she needed to survive, and she needed Peeta’s hope). She didn’t choose Gale because he had the same dark personality traits and negativity toward the Capitol that she did, which parallels their similar darker physical traits. IMO, they HAVE to change these actors physically to recreate the depth of their characters and relationships. PLEASE, Lionsgate, just reassure the fans that you will do this!

It’s now a bunch of 20 year olds fighting.
Rue will be 16, if they want it proportional.

Rachel:
I’m not saying they should only please the fans, they should try to work all the angles. I didn’t think any of the frontrunners for the role were enough for peeta.
What I’m saying is that successful sagas like LOTR and Harry Potter have been very careful to please the fans and guess what? They do well with the critics as well. Hunger games is my favorite book. The saga deserved not less than that. If the deadline is all over their heads and fandom are not supporting the casting then KEEP SEARCHING. It’s not the phisical appearance here that matters. That can be changed. But you won’t make me think Josh is Peeta no matter how good an actor he is. And I don’t know if you are related to Gary or what but he wouldn’t be the first director that screws up a saga. Eragon? Percy Jackson? Golden compass?
I just stated my theories you don’t have to agree with them. But you have to admit that the cast wasn’t as extensive as Harry Potter cast was. Only caucasians girls for Katniss? That limited so much the choices. I’m ok with JL as Katniss but I’m not ok with Josh as Peeta no matter how much they work in their make up.

@Courtney.
The director is human. The director can mess up. And no, he didn’t observe Josh for just a minute, they have resumes and videos and a lot of information before hand. Or don’t you think Gary has seen The kids are alright?
And it wouldn’t be the first time that a director or casting directors mess up a saga. Eragon, Golden compass and Percy jackson were disasters in general and the directors took part of that mess.
I just stayed my opinion, didn’t mean to offend anyone. Last time checked we were allowed to express our opinions here. Too bad you didn’t like my views but that’s how I feel.

Those pictures just reinforce even more how much they suck for the roles

i am not sure with this casting but im hoping Gary Ross knows what he is doing and even thought i was mad at him at first, he chose them for something and i am going to trust him

HOLY CRAP! I made those images!!! I never imagined that they would show up on here!!!
And I’m glad they’re making the impact that I hoped they would when I made them; for people to see how good it *could* be, with the right looks to the characters.
I was just trying to be optimistic–still am–and I’m frankly just blown away that my little images made it onto this page. And you linked to my DeviantArt too! WOW! Thanks for the honor to let my manip grace your front page, Mockingjay! ![]()

You know, even before reading this I was fine with Josh being cast. Yeah, he doesn’t have blonde hair or blue eyes… but that’s such a minor detail. I’m more interesting in them casting someone who can completely embody the character, not someone who just looks like them.
As for Liam… I’m still very up in the air about it. For now I’m going to trust their decision for him, and I’m really hoping he’ll surprise me. But I do very much have my reservations.
Thankfully, Gale isn’t in the first book/movie too much anyway.
But I do think people need to stop focusing on the looks. The chances of finding people talented enough to really be these characters and get them and be convincing at them and having them look like them as well are slim. It’s better that they cast people who can act the role, rather than look like the role.

If Tobey Maguire with Ronald McDonald red hair and Chris Cooper with a platinum blond ‘do in Seabiscuit are any indication, let’s hope that Gary doesn’t let hair dye anywhere near his cast this time round.
*shudder*
Wigs made from natural hair might be a better way to go.

^^Edit – okay, Ronald McDonald might be a bit of an exaggeration as it’s more auburn than red, but it still looks really fake ![]()

Dear She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named,
why did you copy your name off of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in Harry Potter?

I think these actors will just take getting used to. I can see Jennifer as Katniss more now, you just have to picture them in the roles. And if they act thier characters well, then they will look more like we all imagined them too.
But I’m pretty skeptical about Liam Hemsworth. ![]()

Those images and hearing the reasoning behind the casting is making me feel much better about everything. I think the three of them will do a fantastic job
