Speculation: What to Expect in Sunday’s ‘Hunger Games’ Teaser Trailer

Now that it’s been confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence will be unveiling a teaser trailer this Sunday at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, people are now talking about what’s actually going to be in the trailer. How much will we see? Who will we see? Just how bad of a tease does Lionsgate intend to be? We looked back on some popular teaser trailers from the past to determine our predictions.

Crystal: Teaser trailers usually run anywhere from 1-2 minutes, but a lot of the run time usually gets eaten up by fade-in introductions, teaser text, and even more information at the end, so I expect we’ll see about a minute of footage altogether, with one complete scene giving background and then flashes of scenes to build the suspense up to the Games. My prediction is that it opens with a voiceover by Jennifer describing the Reaping, then a bit of footage from the Reaping itself, Prim screaming as Katniss volunteers, and possibly Peeta’s reaping. Later, some opening ceremony shots in the Capitol with a line here and there from Cinna and Haymitch. I think it will end with Katniss looking up as she’s being shot up into the Arena and then fade to black with Claudius Templesmith’s voice booming out, “Let the 74th Hunger Games begin!” Of course, I could be completely off and maybe they’ll release a Katniss/Peeta centric trailer! I’d love to see something along the lines of the first Half Blood Prince teaser!

Kimmy: There are two possibilities here, Lionsgate could either be really generous and give us a great big handful of scenes, or they could be really skimpy and tease us with tiny glimpses of scenes that really make us itch for more. I’m thinking they will probably just reveal enough to get our hearts racing, so we’re super excited. When promoting a movie, less is always more because then they can do more of these exciting reveals in the future, without us seeing the whole movie! I’m expecting the teaser to have a little bit of a back story to the ‘Hunger Games,’ then maybe a glimpse at Katniss running. Often, teasers spend most of their time with epic titles, like ‘There were once 13 Districts.’ ‘One Rebelled..,’ or something along those lines! I’m thinking (and hoping!) we’ll see a flash of Peeta, and Gale in the trailer as well. I’m hoping super-revealing things like seeing the reaping, and Katniss on her spot before the games begin, will be saved for the full trailer later on! I’m just hoping for a short glimpse of the general vibe of the movie.
