Vanity Fair Releases Gorgeous Photo of Main ‘Hunger Games’ Tributes

While the odds may not be in favor of these actors in the arena, they certainly were in the casting room. In what was one of the most-watched casting calls for young actors since Twilight, auditions for The Hunger Games were a battle royale in their own right. Anxious to make the cut, hopefuls went all out: they covered their faces with dirt, put twigs in their hair, and wielded various weapons (including a Nerf crossbow and plastic butcher knife). It was all for the chance to play the “tributes” who fight each other to the death in contests broadcast throughout Panem (the futuristic ruins of North America) in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s wildly popular young-adult novels. Ultimately, director Gary Ross took a liking to a fresh-faced cast that includes stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, and a host of new breakout actors.
I just squealed, had a mini freakout, then just stared happily at my screen. WOW! I can’t wait for this issue of VF!

““I got to meet [Hunger Games author] Suzanne Collins at the first meeting, which was very exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. But I had a great read-through, and then came back to do a test screening a few weeks later. I also hit it off with Jen—the chemistry between the two of us really worked. A couple of weeks went by where I couldn’t say a single word about it … then I got the call. It still didn’t even hit me, until I walked on set for the first day.””
One of the things that will sell HG for me will be the chemistry between Peeta and Katniss. I can’t wait to see the end of the movie where Peeta reaches out and say “One more time? For the audience?”

I was so excited then I clicked over and saw the picture.
This looks like the same exact field and I’d guess the same photographer, with the same FX lens as the Twilight VF cast photo from 2008. Does VF do that with every “teen” movie? That’s pretty disappointing and not creative.
The clothes are different. Maybe the other shots will be better…
Haha anyone else notice they propped Josh up on a rock to make him taller haha.

Yup its like almost exact to the Twilight photo shoot. I don’t know if they ran out of ideas for a shoot or what but its pretty much exact. Like you said the coloring of the clothing is different but that’s about it.

LOVE this! Love the coloring, the composition, this whole cast.
Though, I was surprised they put so many spoilers in the rollover comments. A lot of people reading VF probably haven’t read THG, and will now know that Foxface lasts to nearly the end without killing anyone, that Thresh plays a key role in Katniss’ survival, and that Peeta has been in love with Katniss since he was a kid. I mean, a big part of THG’s intrigue for me was trying to figure out Peeta’s intentions along with Katniss in the beginning, and I was hoping new movie audiences will get to experience that same mystery without all these love triangle spoilers…

I have to say, one of the first things I noticed about this pic was that it looked exactly like the Twilight VF photo except with different outfits. Literally, it’s the same background, same style, everything, ugh. I mean, really?

Oh wow… Josh is soo short! They had to prop him on a rock and have Jennifer bend in an awkward pose to make them look proportionate! Whatevz he’s still perfect.
