Four Hunger Games Book Moments That Aren’t in the Film

Having been an avid reader and cinema geek for the greatest part of my life from A Farewell to Arms to Harry Potter, I find it helps to know in advance what won’t be focused on and what was lost during the adaptation process. Thanks to the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, we’ve picked up a sample of things that have been sacrificed for the larger story. Producer Nina Jacobson and director Gary Ross have given insights into the decisions:

  • Madge: Jacobson says that “you have so little time to establish these characters. So if Madge has to get thrown under the bus so you can make sure that an audience who hasn’t read the books understands the devotion between Katniss and Prim, then that’s what you do.”
  • Focus on Avoxes:  Director Gary Ross explains “we have Avoxes, but we don’t digress in the film. I think it’s a wonderful way to populate the world, but there are just certain [cutbacks] that have to happen.”
  • Focus on the prep team: Octavia, Flavius and Venia are all in the movie but we won’t really get to know them. Jacobson says “we agreed that the main thing is to establish Cinna. So we had to sort of borrow from Peter to pay Paul!”
  • Capitol gadgets: Gadgets like food automators won’t be shown. Jacobson explains “we didn’t want the Capitol to appear too fanciful. It has to appear ominous and threatening. The Capitol has to be a mind-blowing experience, but it can’t be Whoville.”
Luckily for me, so far these were all things that I either knew or expected. Let us know in the comments what you think: Are you happy with these omissions so far? Or are you worried what else might be in the background or on the cutting room floor?
Also on the soundtrack side of things, Taylor Swift told Entertainment Weekly:
“one of  [soundtrack supervisor T Bone Burnett]‘s objectives was to make Appalachian music 300 years from now-what Americana and bluegrass music would turn into in the future.”

I think it’s fine Madge isn’t going to be in the movie, but how will they incorporate everything she takes part of in Catching Fire??

The reasons Nina Jacobson gives are understandable. I just hope they can pull it all off.

I get that Madge isnt in the Movies but She is the main reason For Catching Fire and Mockigjay because SHE GIVES Katniss the MockingJay pin and I’m a little disappointed in other things that won’t be in These Movies but as long as there good then no complains right.

  4.

So, the Avoxes will be there, but we won’t get the history? As in, they’re not going to show the capture encounter in the woods?

I think in one of the trailers, it shows Katniss and Gale in the woods, and the hovercraft capturing the girl, it probably just won’t go that in depth.

Are you guys serious? Madge isn’t the “reason for CF and Mockingjay.” I don’t mean to be so mean and serious, but that is ridiculous and I’ve heard it so many times. The pin is still in the movie, it just has a different back story. It will still be the symbol of rebellion.
And Madge doesn’t have any crucial parts in the book after giving Katniss the pin. Her other two main uses: 1) Giving Mrs. Everdeen morphling for Gale (which can be changed by saying Mrs. Everdeen just happens to have morphling on hand; easy fix) and 2) Katniss looking for Madge, and ending up seeing the rebellion in D8 (they can do numerous things to successfully change this, one being that Katniss walks away from the party b/c she’s overwhelmed/sad/etc. and sees the uprising on the mayor’s tv. The mayor sees her and tells her to amscray. Tada! Another easy fix).

@Will We aren’t getting the scene where the Avox girl gets captured. She’ll be there to service Katniss, but they won’t have any recognition of each other.

@Christina I think the hovercraft in the woods is bringing Effie and her Capitol posse to D12. It’s already been confirmed (in the Movie Companion) that the scene with the Avox girl is out.

i dunno, these things, (other than madge) may not be that essential to this book, but they are to the others, especially mockingjay with the avoxes and prep team. and i also think that the gadgets are important because they show how important this world is from katniss’

Just because Madge isn’t in this movie they can introduce her in Catching Fire, sequels always introduce new characters. They could introduce her in the next movie they would have to alter the backstory somewhat. I do think taking out the gadgets does make the Capitol more threatening.

I so want to see the scene where Cato and Thresh duke it out in that thunderstorm. I think it would be really cool to watch. Also, I’d like to see Peeta at the Conucopia and how he managed to join the Careers. That would be sweet.

All these things I pretty much expected. When thet trailer showed Katniss with the pin giving it to Prim, I pretty much assumed that Madge would be cut out.

All the other stuff I would have LIKED to have seen, but it’s really not that big of a deal.

    Still excited to see it!!!

I think, overall, the eliminations are understandable, especially when paired with the explanations presented. While I regret the removal of Madge, as she set up future scenes, with the extensive casting for all movies I see the logic. I’m actually surprisingly more upset about the removal of the Capitol gadgets. While their omission may make the Capitol seem more intimidating, the ease of these “gadgets” present served to further empathize the shallow, idyllic life of Capitol dwellers versus the hardships and struggles of those in the folks suffering in the districts. I think it was more of a budget issue, and while a small choice, it was the wrong one to make. Of course, books and movies always differ, and in seeing the movie, that’s something that has to be accepted going in.

Hmm. I really like Madge. It saddens me that she won’t be focused on. It was nice to see that the mayor’s daughter isn’t under the grasp of the Capitol. And it was nice to see that Katniss had a friend, they were perfect matches in their reserved nature. I am really hoping we get to see Madge in the future movies. This is just the first movie, I am not losing hope. As for the avoxes, I am hoping they will have a bigger part later on too… again, to show cruelty and control of the Capitol. I am just thankful that the movie makers are taking it so seriously and are really wanting to please the fans. And if Suzanne Collins approves, we are in good shape, right?

I have noticed that, in interviews, cast members often talk about the tracker jacker scene, but no mention of the final scene with the mutts and Cato… I am starting to think they cut that out as well, or maybe they changed it so that it wouldn´t be as violent and bloody as it is described in the book… final scene without mutts, maybe?

I honestly think that if they tried to include everything in the book, it would be virtually impossible to have a well-paced movie that isn’t insanely long (length is a big consideration). I could imagine critics and people who haven’t read the book thinking a certain scene or character was a little out of place or unnecessary. So I accept these changes wholeheartedly, I trust their movie-making experience.

    mintjellyfish

I can accept everything except the Avoxes. Exploring their background showed that the Capitol could do much worse things than send you to the Hunger Games. Seeing Katniss recognize Lavinia shows just how more cruel the Capitol is. And imagine those in the audience that haven’t read the books reaction when they find out their tongues have been removed!

I wish the prep team was given a bit more focus as they show the personalities of the Capitol (besides Effie) and the scene in Mockingjay where Posy tells Octavia that she’s pretty no matter what is just too touching to cut out.

    @buenlg
The reason they aren’t talking about it is the same reason they don’t talk about the rule change or about Peeta’s interview; it gives too much away. Mentioning what that final battle scene’s about reveals Katniss and Peeta’s alliance and who it comes down to.

  18.

@Kacy I’m hoping that is the reason. The final Mutt scene is what I’m most worried about. It’s hard to do really good CGI animals. People always make fun of the Twilight werewolves!

  19.
    buenlg

@kacy, I get what you are saying, but their alliance is a well known fact,,so talking about it wouldn´t give anything away. I really hope you are right… I don´t know a lot about CGI but the mutts are important, as they are the representation of the Capitol´s cruelty, that scene doesn´t need to be graphic or gory, but it needs to be in the movie

I think the movie will be great, at least these scenes aren’t really that important compared to so many others. Madge had really only one important role – to give katniss the mockingjay pin. And changing it to be Prim instead doesn’t affect the story much, the important thing is the pin and its meaning. I hope that even though they won’t show gadgets of the capitol, they will show a futuristic city. That really is my only concern.

As long as octavia is still green, im all right

  22.
    Spencer

Just to let you know, Suzanne Collins also said in the complete movie companion that they are cutting back on the backstory and importance of careers, which dosent sound too good to me, but i trust lionsgate and of course, Suzanne Collins

It’s so annoying that they don’t focus on the prep team. They symbolize how the capitol basically brainwashes everyone, which is really important to understanding the books. It’s hard to imagine how they will do the next movies without focusing at least a bit more on them.

  24.
    buenlg

i think they reduced the career pack, however i am sure they will explain their behaviour, i.e. the fact that they train all their lives for the hunger games and see the games as their chance to become rich and not a death sentence like the rest of the tributes

  25.
    ara

re the comment about the careers.

i think it will be mentioned. because on the description of the movie it was said along the lines of Katniss being against people/tributes who have trained for the games their whole lives.

    this one:
“Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.”

  26.
    Cece

I think the reasons are stupid, and will come back to bite them in the but! =P
But I am glad the fans of the books, will have things they will know in the movie that won’t be explained to people just watching, like the names of the prep team, and the avoxes.

  27.
    Zack

well i was worrying about what they were going to cut out of the movie. You obviously always have to do that in an adaptation. But if these changes are the worst of it then i’m satisfied

  28.
    Hope

Madge seems to be what everyone is arguing about. It was a nice touch in the book, but other things would have to be cut out if she was included. But i do think the whole prep team should be more… amiable. People who have seen the movies but not read the books will be confused in catching fire. Do you agree?
