Imagine Better Celebrates Katniss Everdeen for International Women’s Day

Katniss. Prim. Rue. Annie. Johanna. What do all these awesome characters have in common? They are all awesome, strong women, of course!
Today we are celebrating our favorite female characters for International Women’s Day with our friends over at The HPA’s Imagine Better project. Think of today as a day to reflect on how authors like Suzanne Collins portray women in a positive light by making them strong, thoughtful, smart, and rebellious.
What do YOU think makes your favorite female characters great? You can get involved today by telling everyone who your favorite women in literature, TV, and movies are and what makes them so special. Check out everyone else’s stories too – let’s make it a great day to celebrate women!
Later tonight, tune in to a livestream launch event which will include guest Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter)!

I’m kind of a t.v. addict so I’ll start by naming some of my favorite female t.v. characters.
First off, the “strong” characters in the traditional sense (physical or mental or both):
- Sarah Walker, Ellie Bartowski, and Anna Wu from Chuck
- Sydney Bristow (though she cried a little too much for my taste, lol), and Irina Derevko (maybe the most a$$-kicking woman ever) from Alias
- Lindsay from Freaks and Geeks
- Kate Beckett and Lanie Parish from Castle
- I’m sure there’s many more I’m forgetting but those are the first ones that popped into my head.
Then there are the characters that don’t necessarily have all their shiz together, but are great characters because they are complex with lots of fully realized strengths and weaknesses:
- Liz Lemon from 30 Rock
- Leslie Knope from Parks and Rec
- All the gals on Community
- Deb Morgan from Dexter
- Carrie Mathison from Homeland
- Again I’m sure I’m forgetting some, but those are the first ones that popped into my head.
My favorite female character in The Hunger Games trilogy is Katniss. She is strong, brave and would do anything to protect her family. I love her attitude and she is just an amazing character
My other favorite female is a singer. Taylor Swift is just so kind and she is just such an inspiration:)
@Rachel
Community. YES. LOVE THEM!
What makes a strong women is independent and isn’t restricted by any barrier of sexism. Katniss is a perfect example of a strong, smart, being her real self. I am a bookworm so all of these strong female characters are form books:
Alanna- The Song of the Lioness Series
June- Legend
Amelia- Hereafter
Wisty- Witch and Wizard
Skeeter- The Help
Minny- The Help
Aibeleen- The Help
Cat- Fat Cat
Nancy Drew- Nancy Drew Series
Susan- The Chronicles of Narnia
Lucy- The Chronicles of Narnia
Miri- Princess Academy
yes, yes, I do read a lot
My fovorite character is Prim because she is full of hope and she likes to help others!! My second most be katniss or Rue they bothe are good persons but at the same time they are strong, Rue never gaive up even went she was 12!
and from others series i like…oooo ema watson she is such a god girl!!
@Jane – Yeah!! If you like the female characters/actors/writers on Community, you should check out this recent article: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/02/28/community-alison-brie-yvette-nicole-brown-gillian-jacobs-megan-ganz-roundtable.html
Oh yeah and I know that Taylor Swift isn’t a character but I ment like if she was a character thats my inspiration. You know?:)
Favorite Female Characters:
-Annie Cresta (The Hunger Games) Won the games in an awful mental state and *spoiler* had to tough it out with her new baby after Finnick went to a happy place.
-Annabeth Chase (Percy Jackson) Daughter of Athena, a very smart strategist and fighter
-Sadie Kane (Kane Chronicles) Can’t remember much about her…
-Hermione Granger (Harry Potter) Smartest student and spell caster
-Valkyrie Cain (Skulduggery Pleasant) All powerful teenage sorceress
-Holly Short (Artemis Fowl) The only female fairie cop in the LEP
Other People I Don’t Want to Explain:
Mina Harker (Dracula), Christine Daae (Phantom of the Opera), China Sorrows (Skulduggery Pleasant), Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd; not one to look up to really but still awesome)
All are not only physically strong but mentally too and really know how to tough it out.

My favorite character is Katniss. She went through so many things, and had to deal with alot of pressure. Also, Annie (from THG) becuase of *SPOLIER* Finnick dying, and having a newborn baby to take care of. I also love Rue and Prim. But all of them are amazing! Happy International Women’s Day!
My favorite female character( beside katnis), is Buffy the vampire slayer !!!!!
Julie Andrews was always my hero growing up, but not for any of the typical reasons. I love acting so I thought that if I could just be her, and have her voice… She’s wonderful, and I was so in love with her on some level. I’m in my thirties now and part of me thinks that it’s kind of silly.
I have a page that I made about Katniss Everdeen and there have been several comments about why she is NOT a hero. It’s an interesting thing to think about. I happen to disagree. I think she’s absolutely wonderful, personally. It’s interesting to watch the things people search for to reach the page as well. “Why Katniss is not a hero” is one of my favorites. I’d love to be able to turn that question around. Why ISN’T she a hero?
