Jennifer Lawrence: “Every Time I Pass a ‘Hunger Games’ Poster, [I Get] Goosebumps”
Jennifer Lawrence and Gary Ross had a really interesting chat with the Chicago Sun Times:
“Mostly, I’m clueless,” says Lawrence, who adds, “Every time, I pass a ‘Hunger Games’ poster, my entire body breaks out into goosebumps.”
The 21-year-old native of Kentucky looks tough enough to take it on.
“I couldn’t have been more wrong about Hollywood screwing this one up because we didn’t,” she says in a defiant voice. “Everyone involved in this film was a fan of the books. We vowed not to make a watered-down version of a great story.”
Lawrence might have had an Oscar nomination under her belt for an obscure film called “Winter’s Bone,” but that didn’t mean she was a lock for a role coveted by other accomplished actresses including Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit”), Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Hanna”).
“Hell, yes, I was competitive about it,” Lawrence insists. “For me, it has nothing to do with being a better actor. I’m not better than those other girls.”
“This role was just me. It was a little bit like Katniss and I were soulmates.”
Director Gary Ross says Lawrence is the kind of actress Hollywood sees once every 10 years. “She actually has subtlety,” he says. “I don’t even understand where she gets it. But in the end, I was directing this girl in awe of her at the same time. One day I actually said, ‘Where do you come from? Where do you get this?’ She said, ‘I don’t know, I had a very ordinary childhood.’ ”

If Abigail Breslin were to play katniss, I would not watch this movie. She’s like 14! Though, saiorse is a great actress!
@Jess me too! SHe is so humble which is funny because in the first book Haymitch was telling Katniss how un humble she is. I would not want anyone else to play Katniss especially Abigail I used to like her but now she is just weird.

Saoirse Ronan kicked all kinds of a$$ in Hanna, but I still think Jennifer fits the part of Katniss a bit better. Hailee Steinfeld was also great in True Grit, but she gives off too much of a “plucky” or “perky” vibe for Katniss. And Abigail was great in Little Miss Sunshine and stuff but I just can’t picture her in this role.
Even before Jennifer was cast, I just thought she was the only natural choice for the role. She was so impressive in Winter’s Bone, and Katniss and Ree Dolly are practically the same character. She is always so down to earth in interviews too, I really hope she never loses that after her level of fame skyrockets!
