Lionsgate Extends Marketing Officer Tim Palen’s Contract

A great deal of The Hunger Games box office success can be attributed to the wonderful marketing campaign by Lionsgate. It was thanks to the work of Tim Palen we never saw footage from the Games in the campaign, we were sorted into districts via Facebook and felt like Capitol citizens waiting for the Games with CapitolCouture.pn, along with beautiful posters and other incredible marketing strategies. Due to the merger of both Lionsgate and Summit, Palen’s job was at risk however, with Lionsgate combining departments from both studios and choosing “an executive from one or the other to be in charge.”

Now the Los Angeles Times reports that Tim Palen’s contract has been extended:

Tim Palen, Lionsgate’s chief marketing officer who is coming off of the blockbuster success of “The Hunger Games,” has signed a new deal that will keep him in his job through 2015…

Palen, a photographer who takes many of the pictures and designs some of the art for Lionsgate’s advertisements, is well respected in the community and said to be a favorite of Chief Executive Jon Feltheimer…

Going forward, Palen will oversee the marketing for movies that were already in the works at Lionsgate, including the upcoming “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” “Expendables 2″ and next year’s “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire.”

Cannot wait to see what Palen and his marketing team create for Catching Fire!

If the new contract runs until 2015 could that mean he’ll be working on one or both Mockingjay films too?

Definitely fantastic news, Palen and his teams strategies worked brilliantly for The Hunger Games, and as has already been said above I can’t wait to see what they come up with for Catching Fire :D I hope the arena parts will largely stay a secret again.

Why weren’t they smart enough to give Gary Ross what he wanted?? Happy for Palen! This means no glimpses of the clock arena??

The marketing team is to be commended, but I think the main reason the movie is so successful is because the books are marvelously written. The poignancy takes you by surprise. It is so wonderful to see people’s capacities in full flower — whatever their professions!
