‘The Hunger Games’ Approved for June Release in China

Following on from the immense worldwide success of ‘The Hunger Games’, the film has now been approved for release in China!
The film will be released nationwide in China with both dubbed and subtitled prints by The China Film Group in conjunction with Lionsgate’s promotional partner, Talent International. THE HUNGER GAMES will be one of the first Hollywood studio films to be released in China under the new blockbuster revenue sharing agreement announced in February that allows Western distributors to collect up to 25% of a film’s receipts in China.
“THE HUNGER GAMES juggernaut continues to gain momentum around the world, and we’re thrilled that we can now share the exciting first installment of THE HUNGER GAMES franchise with Chinese moviegoers in June,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman. “China is already one of the leading territories at the international box office, and the launch of THE HUNGER GAMES in this key market is another sign of the franchise’s continuing emergence as a truly global phenomenon.”
It’s fantastic that fans in China now get the chance to see ‘The Hunger Games’ on the big screen and share our excitement

More important than the Chinese fans sharing the excitement is the fact that China is one of the biggest Markets, and Hunger Games being released there will not only improve the movie’s BoxOffice numbers (wich are already big) to something more impressive, but may also help to consolidate the “hunger Games” presence in the International Market – remember that, though The Hunger Games was big in the US, it wasn’t really that big in Foreign Countries, and that is something that needs to be fixed. That happened because though the book was a best-seller in the US, it wasn’t anything like that in most foreign countries. I Live in Portugal, and I didn’t even heard anything about “The Hunger Games” until the movie came out, and I can tell you, for the Portuguese BoxOffice Numbers, the movie’s performance here was very poor (it’s Ok though, since Portugal doesn’t Contribute much for the overall BoxOffice Numbers). What is expected is that the films Domestic success will bump booksales all over the world and, by the time “Catching Fire” is released, everyone will know what are the Hunger Games and, henceforth, will see the sequel. China (and Japan, if it is released there) will definitely help to increase the movie’s visibility in the International Market.
