Casting Fire: Fancasting David Tennant as Beetee

Continuing Week 4 of our ‘Catching Fire’ fancast series Casting Fire, this Wednesday we take a look at David Tennant for the role of Beetee. I told you this week was random!

David is best known for his role in ‘Dr Who’, but he has recently lent his voice to ‘The Pirates! Band of Misfits’ as well as ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, among many short appearances in various TV series. Our opinions were pretty unanimous this week, with none of us fans, but perhaps there are some Tennant supporters out there?

Ciara

I’m not gonna win any fans here, oh well must be honest, possibly the most over-acting, overrated actor of his generation. I want David Tennant nowhere near the cast of Catching Fire. I haven’t forgiven him for playing the most irritating Hamlet I’ve ever seen on stage (3 hours of being irritated and surrounded by people is not fun) and like a repressed memory, I still find it difficult to come to terms with Barty Crouch Jr from Goblet of Fire… I mean, what was that?!

Crystal

Just like Erin, I’ve only ever seen David Tennant in Goblet of Fire and therefore I find it a bit hard to let go of the villain in him. I know that sounds silly since I’m such a big backer of Michael Emerson since Ben was such a villain on LOST, but he ended up redeeming himself. And I know I’m an embarrassment to sci-fi fans for not having seen a single episode of Dr. Who, but that probably also contributes to why I’m not much of a Tennant supporter.

Erin

The only role I’ve ever seen David Tennant in is when he played Barty Junior in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.’ I do think he looks a bit young to be Beetee, but if he can pull off awkward and nerdy the way he pulled off deranged and creepy in the Potter moive, then I think he might work out. However, looking at his resume on IMDB, it looks like he’s quite busy at the moment.

Tash

I have never seen David Tennant in a single thing, not even Harry Potter (I know, I know!) so sorry but I’m going to have to base it off looks this week. To me he just doesn’t look the part, a bit too gangly/lanky/weedy for my liking. I’m not saying Beetee is a portly fellow, but I certainly imagine him to have a nicer, rounder face, not the harsh lines I see on David. Looking at the photos of David on IMDB, he always seems to be frowning/scowling, and its almost like he really only has the one facial expression. I guess he does look like a mad scientist, but I don’t want Beetee to look so creepy.

No, definitely not! I don’t really like him, plus he’s tooooooo young! I think Michael Emerson would be fantastic and Gary Oldman would be cool.. though that’s a bit of a stretch ^^

  2.
    Emma

no. i still say micheal emerson

  3.
    Kat

YES!!! I love Doctor Who, and Harry Potter, AND David Tennant! He would be perfect for this role! He has background in sci-fi and fantasy, plus, I think he’s just nerdy enough for it to be easy for him!

    Kat

Gary Oldman is awesome, too, though! I think Micheal Emerson is a bit of a stretch.

Sorry but David Tennant is the doctor! In my mind he will always be the doctor! I just don’t think it would be right if he was in Catching Fire! Defiantly not Beetie!

  6.

I DON’T think david should be beetee he looks to young.

  7.
    Saber

    Too young
Beetee is about 60, people. With dark hair and ashen skin and a slight frame. Nothing like this guy

    mayahabee

Not too surprising about this. But then again, Beetee is pretty old for him.

  9.

    OMG i love david tennant
    perfect choice

Although he’s a good actor, he looks way too young and not nerdish enough for Beetee.

So many people are like “he doesn’t seem like Beetee”… based of Doctor Who and Harry Potter, but of course he won’t because he plays different characters. However, in Doctor Who he does do very well at going off on rants people don’t understand, and being incrediably smart.

If David Tennant was cast as Beetee, it would be the best casting choice in my opinion. For the most part, I only read the Casting Fire’s for Finnick and Johanna, but because of DT, I had a look at this one.

I can’t believe none of you like him. But the fans known he will be good for it :)

    David Tennant for Beetee!!

    Meg

David Tennant is amazing!!! (Way better than 11th Docter) I understand it would be weird having him as Beetee, because he plays such a good docter. But he’s a great acter and could totally pull it off. Am I right?

    Susie

Not my favorite possibility, but I if on the off-chance he were our Beetee….I may be able to get used to it…

I’ve never seen Dr. Who, so I’m not basing this off of an obsession with that. He was creepy (and kinda weird) in Goblet of Fire, so it’s a little hard for me to forget that, but he acted well in Harry Potter, so I think he could do a decent rendition. Looks wise it’s had to say, ’cause in Goblet of Fire and in all the pictures I see, he always seems to look a little deranged, but I can see it. I wouldn’t be opposed to it, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

I’m still rooting for Clark Gregg. I think he would be perfect.

    desiree

Hes too young i invision beetee as an old man…

  18.
    Rachel

Sweet Jesus, I never made the connection that Tennant played Barty Crouch Jr. as well as Doctor Who. Freaking flabbergasted.
That pretty much shows that he can play an role that comes his way. Wide-ranged acting ability.

  19.
    the doctor

holy crap, you guys need to watch doctor who. david tennant is basically my favorite man on the planet. i can’t believe you’ve never seen doctor who. seriously. now THAT is what i call a true cult following.

Too young and all wrong for beetee though. dunno what anyone was thinking.

  20.

Mmm… Im not so sure about Tennant. Don’t get me wrong, i love Dr. who but i always pictured micheal emerson as beetee when reading the books.

  21.
    Clover Everdeen

Yes, Yes, and YES!!!! David Tennant is a wonder as Doctor Who, and would (will?) be the PERFECT Betee!!! Oh, you guys are gooooood!

  22.
    Momo

I want Bradley Cooper as Betee

  23.
    Becky

David Tennant is such a great actor and different in everything he does! He can go from Doctor who to Secret Smile Shakespeare and Harry Potter! He has in my opinion the perfect body type for this character and I think would absolutely be the BEST choice!!!!

  24.
    Qwerty

DOCTOR WHOOOOOOOO!!!!! Love Tennant yet never thought of him as a possibilty. He does differ appearance wise from my imagination however I think he has great potential. Geeky? Check. And how he he was in Harry Potter is pretty much the other side of the spectrum from Who so that proves he has range. It wasn’t that fair to review him on one minor role, so give him a chance! He’d be great!

NOPE! He looks too young. Get over it!
The perfect actor must be played as Beetee is Michael Emerson!

    Amanda

As a Tennant fangirl, I would normally support the idea of him being involved in anything I love, but in this case I don’t think he’s right for Beetee. He’s too attractive :)

    Cece

Noo! Keep the doctor away from the Hunger Games. It would be too weird to see two of my favorite fandoms collide!

I think I’ve never been so angry with this site.
Yes, I do understand the concerns about his age, though I don’t know exactly why you all pictured him being so much older than Tennant. I might have overread something, but I pictured him to be in his 40s or maybe early 50s. He’s older than Wiress who’s probably in her 30s, so I think he’d be okay. (though it is true that he looks younger than his age – especially when he’s being enthusiastic)
But complaining that he looks villainous and not nerdy enough just because of a 3 minute role in HP (that I actually didn’t like too much because of the way this interesting character was butchered into a one-dimensional psychopath – but I never thought it was the actor’s fault. He just delivered what the poor script requested of him)
If you ever look the word nerdy up in a lexicon you’ll get to pictures. One of Tennant as the Doctor and one of him just being his enthusiastic self talking about socks or the day he met George Lucas.
I never found him to be “over-acting” since he’s just doing it, when the role requires it. He’s pretty good at doing eccentric characters like the Doctor, Hamlet (which I find brilliant, btw), Peter Vincent in Fright Night and of course Campbell – a manic depressive – in “Takin’ over the Asylum” but he’s also great in more quiet roles like “United” (which I do recommend a lot), “Single Father” or “A Minor Character” plus he’s just sweet and likeable in stuff like Casanova or “Much Ado About Nothing”.
Seriously, I know that acting like everything that’s got something to do with art is a matter of personal tast, but if you’ve got nothing to judge an actor about but one 3 minute appearance in Harry Potter, you probably shouldn’t talk about him at all (I’m okay with Ciara disliking him for Hamlet. I can’t understand it, but at least she saw a lot of him – even if it was just of one character he played – before she judged him)
because you said he’s not nerdy enough: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-4_kvxPBYY
The Hamlet Soliloquy Ciara hated so much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYZHb2xo0OI
The United Trailer because he looks a bit older than usual in that one (and I cried a lot watching the film) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myNAceLxHI4
and this because it’s one of the best scenes of my favourite Doctor Who episode (though I probably shouldn’t add “creepy” stuff^^)

So, uhm sorry for the monster-rant and yeah, sorry for my bad English. German’s my first language.^^

He would be perfect! i’ve watched all the episodes of him in Doctor Who, and he could totally playt the slightly insane, super smart victor. and, i’ve seen him in Harry Potter a thousand times. he could totally play him without a doup

    Evi

David’s not my favourite Doctor but he is a brilliant actor. He’d definitely do the role justice. And he looks great when he wears glasses. He’s not too young for the role, Beetee should be in his forties and David is. They can always make him look older too.
I understand that Finnick’s casting is all about the looks, but Beetee’s isn’t, the role only requires a good actor. I’m disappointed that you guys and many people in the comment section judged Tennant based on his looks and a couple of minutes of a poorly written children’s movie.

  35.
    Meg

I think it’s rather unfair for the reviewers of this proposition to have not seen Tennant’s main thing, and the reason he’s even being considered. Hamlet and GOF aside, he is listed as one of the most brilliant Doctors of all time. Even in the Smith era he tends to capture as many fans. And if you were to know anything about Dr. Who, you’d know that the Doctor and Beetee share many a similarity, such as extreme quirkiness and a genius for science and technology. I feel like what Tennant could bring to the role with his background as the Doctor makes him one of the best ideas for the job.

    Maite

Beetee has something David Tennant had as the Doctor but no, at least not for dear Beetee. I’d love to see him on Catching Fire or maybe Mockingjay 1 or 2 but… Not as Beetee.

Y’ALL CANT JUDGE DAVID TENNANT IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN HIM AS THE DOCTOR! Sorry for caps but SERIOUSLY! He is my ALL TIME favorite actor <3 <3 <3 and-as Rose always says-HE HAS GREAT HAIR :) :):):)
