Rumor: Sam Claflin, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Cicley Tyson Considered for Catching Fire?

The Catching Fire rumours don’t seem like they’ll be stopping any day soon. Lainey is talking audtions yet again this time claiming that in the Finnick casting camp Garrett Hedlund’s alleged audition went very well and Sam Claflin also read for the part. Apparently Oscar nominated Catalina Sandino Moreno was approached for Johanna and also Oscar nominated actress Cicely Tyson is being considered for Mags:

“As reported yesterday, Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the role of Plutarch. Interesting choice. He was, way back, my pick to play Haymitch. I’m also told that while Garrett Hedlund’s audition went very well for Finnick, Sam Claflin also read for it. So again, they’re trying to look at as many options as possible. And with some imagination too. I hear exclusively that Catalina Sandino Moreno was asked to audition for Johanna Mason. But this is inspired, non? I am excited about her. Please note however that nothing has been decided. These details are just meant to give you an idea of how wide their searches have been although my sources tell me they are seriously considering Cicely Tyson for Mags.”

If these considerations turn out to be true, what are you thoughts? Read the full article here, including pics of Jennifer Lawrence allegedly starting her training regime for the next film.

Love, love, love the idea of Cicely Tyson as Mags!

I’m not too fond of Sam playing Finnick. However, I REALLY like the idea of Cicely Tyson for Mags. Even though I pictured Mags as Betty White, I think Cicely could pull off the role too. If she made me cry in The Help, I have no doubt she’ll make myself and many others cry in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Also, Catalina for Johanna.. hmm. She may work. I am not familiar with her acting skills but the look sure does seem to match the character!

Catalina Sandino Moreno would be okay for Johanna. The guyup there seems to old to be Finnick– and Finnick has to be SIZZLING HAWT, and this guy isn’t (not Finnick hawt, at least). And that older lady up there wouldn’t be a good Mags because, and I’m not racist, I imagined Mags as a white old lady with quite a few wrinkles. ;)

OMG I know this is a late realization but Sam Claflin plays William in Snow White and the Huntsman! I LOVED him! Everyone around me liked the huntsman but I loved William! Now I know why I subconcsiouly knew he was the perfect Finnick! Please let this not be just a rumor!!!!!!! I love that guy! I pray he’s Finnick!!!!!! ……sorry for the fan girl outburst lol

Tell me I’m not reading comments about Cicely not being Mags b/c she’s black and nothing about the FACT her acting and credentials is top notch. Seriously?! Really?!……I can’t even. I really need people to evaluate some things in life…Smh. Thank God for Nina and Suzanne being open-minded, its a beautiful thing!

I love Mags’ casting news/rumor! I think she’ll be amazing! Although I still want Garrett as Finnick.

I can see her as Johanna, but not him as Finnick, I see Finnick more as Andrew garfield! Cicely looks more like seeder type, not mags.

In the books does it say nags as is black I don’t remeber it. I always felt that the book suggested that all African Americans lived in 11

Sighs…no the book does not mention RACE for Mags. #Jesusbesomecommonsense

I reallllllly really trust lionsgate to cast this well. I’m 100% they’ll do a great job.

@Destined – it is alarming and sad to hear these comments. I’m so impressed with their considering Tyson – she would lend such gravitas and dignity to the role. We should all be thrilled they’re considering such top-flight actors.

Mockingjay97 – do you hear yourself? You pictured Mags as a “normal” old brown-haired lady? We need to stop combing through the books to verify the racial makeup of every single character. Tyson is perfect for Mags.

Cicely is cool great cast if they get her. I think using a 10 year old picture of Catalina isn’t going anywhere. Whatever in using a grown woman for Johanna is in there minds.

I never pictured Mags as Betty White. She’s mainly done comic roles lately, and I just never thought of Mags that way. Mags won’t have a ton of screen time, so she’ll have to make a big impact in a short amount of time. I agree that CTyson would bring gravitas to the role. Her face and her eyes tell stories…..she’d be perfect! I’ve never seen the other two in anything….physically, they look alright.

@SPM: I think Mockingjay97 didn´t want to say only white people are “normal”. If Mockingjay97 is from the same part of the world like me, where we can walk walk the streets and the chance of meeting a black person is next to nothing, white as “normal” is just an everyday reality, not racism. “Normal” as opposite to “extraordinary”, “normal” as common. I don´t think people who didn´t imagine Mags as black are racists.
I have never seen Catalina or Cicely act, but if they´re good, grab them and don´t let them go, Lionsgate. The rest will be a make-up department work :-)

I’m liking these choices. Lionsgate, keep it up! That is, if Lainey is reliable…

@She – Then I think that’s a great argument for diversity in casting. And I didn’t imagine Mags as African-American, either – until I saw Ms. Tyson’s name on the list. Now having her in that role makes perfect sense to me.

Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere? ;)

I would actually be kinda content with Sam being cast as Finnick. I think I’d still prefer Garrett Hedlund but Sam’s great, too.
And I haven’t seen neither Catalina nor Cicely act, so based only on their look, I think they would be okay. ;-)
I just want something to happen already :-D . I hope the casting doesn’t take too long, now that the script seems to be finished.

I think Cecily Tyson could be Seeder

I don’t think just saying “I didn’t personally picture that character as black” (or Asian, or Hispanic, or even just white) is racist. But I think that assuming that unless a character is specifically described as black (or some other race) that they’re automatically white, so that casting someone who’s not white is *wrong*, is — well, I wouldn’t quite call it racist, but perhaps suggestive of a limited worldview, or not much exposure to a diverse population. But if Beetee and Wiress wind up being played by white actors, I wouldn’t say the casting is wrong just because I pictured them as having some Asian ancestry. Though demographically, as most Americans with East Asian ancestry live on the coasts, I guess many would have been killed off in the coastal flooding that was part of the catastrophe that preceded Panem. So I can understand if there’s not a lot of Asians in Panem, but I’m sure there are still some left.

    SPM

@Satsuma – I agree. To me the indicator is whether someone is willing to let go of “how they pictured that character” once they’re confronted with a different reality. Sure, as a white person I often tend to picture people that way. But when I see an incredible casting possibility like Cicely Tyson, it makes me realize my own limitations (as you describe) and makes me very thankful that the casting people have a broader vision for these characters than I do.

For example, I never thought of Beetee and Wiress as being Asian, but I like the idea and would be very happy to see casting possibilities along that line. I wouldn’t even mind if the actor playing Finnick has brown hair and brown eyes (!) so long as he captures Finnick’s pathos.

The only thing that matters is how well an actor can sell me the character, and that has nothing to do with his or her skin color or other physical features.

Sam looks like a pretty good Finnick canidate.

Cicley looks like a good candidate. More so than Betty White. Everyone wants Betty White because she’s the first elderly movie and television actress that comes to mind. Catalina, from that pic, looks pretty good as Johanna.

    AOI

not bad, not bat at all. While I didn’t hoped for sam to be finnick, I’m still liking the choice. The others are OK for me as well.

  25.

Sam was not my first choice, but oh well. Catalina would be good for Johanna, but I think I’m for Naya Rivera. Cicely Tyson is perfect for Mags, along with Ellen Albertazi, she is a great actress, so I’m rooting for her (Cicely).
