Naya Rivera: “I would love to play Johanna Mason”

A few weeks ago we covered Naya Rivera in an edition of Casting Fire. Now Radar Online have caught up with Naya, asking her if she’s read the trilogy and what she thinks about being fancast in the role of Johanna Mason:
Did you enjoy The Hunger Games?
I started reading the books before I even knew they were making it into a movie. I’m just a huge fan. I would love to play Johanna Mason. She’s the axe-wielding ex-tribute and former winner. She’s a grade-A badass!Are you surprised by the outpouring from fans?
It’s so exciting. I get tweets every day, and it feels good that they get behind something I’m passionate about.
Would you like to see Naya as Johanna? Or is there another name that hasn’t come up yet? Either way hopefully Lionsgate will start making some announcements soon!

@Saber, etc.
Seriously, you’re going to assume she doesn’t get the character based on one sentence? Yeah, of course she’s a multi-faceted character, but if I really had to use just one word to describe her, like Naya seemed limited to, I’d probably use badass as well. She’s vulnerable and broken, but she’s pushing through that brokenness and is still a very strong and sometimes funny character. That is badass.
And oh my god of course she understands a character whose “abrasiveness and sharpness is a front, but it’s a front that’s become so deeply ingrained with loathing and dread that is has become part of her.” Um, that IS Santana, the character she plays. She could totally play this, guys, if she was given the chance.
I’ve seen Naya on Glee and she can play the bad girl but also she does have her moments and can be very emotional in some episodes. Unfortunately she is known for her role in Glee and in my opinion since she has such a big role in that show it would be odd to see her in the Hunger Games.
I say Leighton Meester or Minka Kelly! More so for Leighton Meester, she’s pretty and have that bwitchy look I pictured Johanna Mason to have.
I personally think it should be Naya more than anyone, I pictured Johanna like Naya, but with short, chin-length spiky hair, but with streaks of red hair, if Naya would be willing to cut her hair for the role I think she should win. I personally like Glee, but even for the people who don’t I think Naya has great acting potential, Katelyn is right! Look up when her character on Glee comes out of the closet to her grandmother, she can portray emotional, but also very mean. I think Naya would be perfect!!
Okay, I could see her, but I stil am caught up on the girl who played Malina Birch from Soul Surfer. The actress is Sonya Balmores Chung. She would be perfect to me. She is a pro surfer as well, so she already has the perfect body. I would love to see sonya play Johanna. Real life Sonya: http://youtu.be/98TROP9CQAc
On screen as Melina Birch; http://youtu.be/CZc8rXpBAXg
Thats all I can find, but the one scene whereshe comes in and is like “Why are you here?” is good.
With upcoming Glee tight schedule, I can’t think she would. Unless.. it got cancelled!
Audition is already open, right? Let’s see if she participate in.
she is my fav glee actor
@sharkz!anon
Her character graduated this year, so I don’t think she will be on the show as much as she use to, if at all.
Santana on Glee wasn’t a one dimensional character. She got pretty serious in the last season. Naya’s my pick.
She looks too nice. But this is just one pic, and I haven’t watched Glee, so maybe she could do it. I don’t know. But I know they’ll choose the right person, so whoever they do choose, I’ll be happy with.
Kristen Bell is a good actress, but lets face it, Johanna isn’t described as light skinned, blonde hair, and blue eyes. she’s tanned with dark eyes! i also doubt Kristen would be able to pull off the attitude Naya has mastered over her time spent on Glee. Naya is just absolutely PERFECT for Johanna! she also doesn’t seem like she’d mind smacking Jennifer Lawrence for a perfect performance, Kristen seems like she’ll hold back. even if she doesn’t, she runs off Suzanne’s discription of Johanna, we do want to keep as close to the book as possible don’t we?
I couldn’t agree more with Eivanna.
Hey cool!!!
Hope u get the part
people who are saying johanna ia blonde i dont think she is and if they make her blonde in the movie im gonna be mad! i pictured her brown hair and tanned since she does live in the lumber district.
YES YES YES! Naya is a PERFECT Johanna! I watch Glee and Naya has mastered the skill of being a badass. When I first read Catching Fire, I imagined Naya as Johanna. Naya can definitely pull off Johanna’s attitude. I can totally see her as Johanna. I hope I see Naya as Johanna!!
@satsuma: you have a good point but i think she knows that. She read the books before she knew there was a movie and seems to be a true fan. She does look good for it but i havnt seen that season of glee.
NAYA IS AMAZING SHE WILL ALWAYS BE MY JOHANNA. SHE’S– I CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN IT. SHE WOULD BE THE PERFECT JOHANNA! SERIOUSLY. Thank you for your consideration. (lol THG joke)
i want her to be johanna so bad she would be perfect (except for the looks but who cares) she is like my fav. actress and i really want her to play johanna instead of that jena chick. i’m gonna be so pissed if she doesn’t get’s it, i might not even see it except i will cause like i LOVE the hunger games so much!!!
