Jennifer Lawrence Claims ‘Catching Fire’ Will Be ‘Very Real’

In an interview with LA Times, Jennifer Lawrence had some very encouraging things to say about ‘Catching Fire’:

Running through a battle environment killing teens while a global audience watches in glee doesn’t (one hopes) have much in common with the world we live in. But Jennifer Lawrence — who of course plays Katniss Everdeen in said environment’s “Hunger Games” — thinks the film’s sequel will offer a certain verisimilitude.

“The new movie will be very real, which is what I’m excited about,” she told 24 Frames of “Catching Fire,” which Francis Lawrence will direct. “I really like his take, which is a lot of what I liked in Gary Ross,” she added. “It’s the realistic grasp of the story instead of all the details of the imaginary things.”

Lawrence said she’s met with the director and believes that, overall, he’s trying to continue what Ross started with his adaptation of the first book in the Suzanne Collins’ series. “He’s not trying to reinvent anything,” she said.

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited that she’s excited! It’s good to hear such encouraging words coming from our Katniss. :)

I wonder when they’ll release the cast. I still think Jim Parsons (Sheldon from Big Bang) would be an AWESOME Beetee.

well, if you ask me jennifer certainly does NOT say things just for the sake of PR, so i’m VERY encouraged by this. if francis lawrence sticks to the tone gary ross imprinted to the first movie, then there’s a high chance we’ll get a good product– the critics may DESTROY him for “not reinventing anything” (always happens), but it makes ME feel confident, at least, as a fan.

    That makes me HAPPY!!!

Not sure how to take those comments in re Peeta’s character development. If Lawrence is continuing what Ross started, Peeta’s gonna get screwed again…

This is assuring, but I do agree @SPM that things that were under developed in THG should be more expanded in CF such as Peeta’s character among other things. It will def be interesting to see!

“It’s the realistic grasp of the story instead of all the details of the imaginary things.” Not sure what to make of that.

  11.

@SPM, destined– how does her saying lawrence will try to follow ross’s footsteps imply in any way that peeta’s character development will get the shaft? lawrence could intend to emulate ross in a thousand other aspects that have nothing to do with peeta (style, cinematography, non-canon scenes, even his involvement with the different aspects of production…).

and anyway, i think that paragraph makes it pretty clear that what she meant was that francis lawrence wants to root the film in reality instead of focusing on the sci-fi aspects, like gary ross did. and i personally think that was a very good decision to make on ross’s part.

i understand the concerns, but wanting to continue what gary ross did with the first film does not immediately mean lawrence will make the same mistakes. (though i didn’t think peeta’s character “got screwed,” personally. do i wish he had gotten more screentime? sure, but i don’t think he was underdeveloped. not anymore than he was in the book, at least). besides, lawrence isn’t even writing the script. i mean, come on, let’s not freak out over nothing…

@carla – I didn’t say it implies that or anything else. I said I wasn’t sure how to interpret her comments. Uncertainty is not freaking out, it’s just…uncertainty.

  13.

@SPM– LOL, we’ll be uncertain until the day the movie premieres, believe me. but jennifer was first talking about the reality vs sci-fi aspects, and later on she made overall comments. there’s really no need to “interpret” that re: one particular aspect. let’s not MAKE this quote make us even MORE uncertain than we already are, that’s all i’m saying.

@Carla pretty much what @SPM said. And don’t take it literally its just a caution and why I won’t say Peeta got “screwed”, many fans do think his character came across too vague in THG. Notice why in my comment, I say I’m hopeful for expansion and it will be interesting to see. Relax….

@carla – don’t worry, I was already maxed out on uncertainty. I have some concerns about Ross’s approach, which is all I was trying to express.

    Bit of an essay here…

Peeta definitely got more screen time in the book but I think his character showed more development in the film. I suspect that some people are mixing up the two things (character development vs screen time).

We see Peeta move from a terrified, out of his depth kid to someone who calmly stares death in the face by the end. He also moves from someone nervous to even talk to Katniss at the start to somone who can tease her about her bow at the end.

Sure, he wasn’t in a lot of scenes relatively speaking but each one he was in definitely moved his character arc forwards. I’m thinking in particular of the scenes where he’s talking about how is own mother has no faith in him, and when he stands up to the careers.

I never got much of a sense from the book of how he developed, not that I’m faulting the book as it is based soley through Katniss’ POV. Still, I think the Gary Ross et al did a fantastic job of using their extra tools to paint a vivid picture of him.

I think the underlying current here is that we are going to get another faithful adaptation, that’s certainly what I took from Jen’s quote, and that would be fantastic :D

  19.

@SPM (i think that anonymous was you?) & Destiny– don’t worry, guys, i get it. i didn’t mean to jump on you or anything, just really eager to look on the positive side of things for a change. i’m anxious enough about this movie as it is, so i balk at any mention of further uncertainty. sorry ’bout that. :)

for what it’s worth, @tash, i’m totally with you there. and i’m also with @11thHeaven when it comes to movie!peeta.

@carla – oops, forgot to sign in. Yep, that was me. I didn’t mean to hijack the thread w/my Peeta concerns.

@11th – I hope on re-viewing I can see Peeta the same way as you do. :)

What does she mean by imaginary details?????????

I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE PARTS IN THE MOVIE WHERE SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE PREGNANT!!!!!!!! AND IM GOING TO BE IN THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!! YEPPEEEEE!!!!!

    @SPM

My sentiments as well. By being ‘real’ I interpreted what Jennifer was saying as an affirmation that they will show the changes in District 12 and the unrest in other districts.

Like you, I also feel that Peeta needed to have more screentime — not to establish his character but to establish his relationship with Katniss. Quite frankly I feel that Gary Ross stayed away from doing this since fans were so adamant that THG is not Twilight (hence taking out whatever hint of possible romance in the movie.) Since the movie was about he first book, I can accept that the romance is ‘forced’ or ‘fake’, But ‘Catching Fire’ has to establish that there is indeed something between Katniss and Peeta. Peeta’s capture and the events in Mockingjay will not make sense without it.

I’m afraid that Gale’s whipping will have a bigger impact relationship-wise and Peeta will be relegated to the creepy stalker again after he gives the locket to Katniss in the arena.

  23.
    SPM

@AnvilGate – nice to know I’m not the only one. :) Gary and Josh admitted in an interview that they downplayed the romance on purpose, with the result that now the dynamic between Peeta and Katniss is way off balance. Not only will he continue to seem like a stalker, it will seem totally unbelievable that he’s the one who inspires Katniss to speak up in D11 and serves as her emotional rock before and during the Games.

  24.
    Destined

@SPM that is so true. Peeta really is Katniss stronghold and that needs to come across screen somehow. I wish too in THG they would have shown a scene of Haymitch telling or explaining to Katniss or even while their in that cave how he was so willing to die for her and again in CF. Just ugh, they really need to expand that dynamic with them. Being hopeful though for more.
