Hunter Parrish ‘has been in talks’ with producers for Catching Fire

In an interview with MTV a couple of weeks back Hunter said he had not been actively pursuing the role of Finnick or getting his hopes up, but now an interview with The Daily Beast has emerged where Hunter revealed he has indeed had talks with producers:
His name has been thrown into the mix of potential actors to play the character of Finnick Odair in the sequel Catching Fire. This time, he’s much more cautious about getting his hopes up. He has been in talks with producers but doesn’t want to think about it too much. His eyes light up, however, as he considers the possibility. “It would be fun,” he says, unable to contain himself. “If Lionsgate (the company behind the film) wants to go for it, I’ll be there. I’ll be right there.”
Hunter also revealed how crushed he was to have missed out on the role of Peeta:
“It was pretty hard. I really, really wanted it.” He says he felt like his whole life was leading up to that role and when he didn’t get it, he was crushed. “I think I just wanted it a little too much.” Looking back, he says, it was a hefty and much needed helping of humble pie. “It became a very grounding experience for me.”
Remember this does not necessarily mean that Hunter is a front runner for the role of Finnick. Support was mixed after the MTV interview, has anyone’s opinion changed in the last two weeks?

Oops, that was me. Anyway, it’s kind of discouraging. I want casting done, whomever they pick.
I can see him as Finnick… It’s just that for the casting contest thing I voted for somebody else.
I think he looks a little too young to be Finnick. I know he is around Finnick’s age, but I think it needs to be more obvious that Finnick is 24 and Katniss is 17.
as always, I trust Suzanne Collins’s judgement, so as long as she is the one approving the casting, I am happy.
I think he looks the irresistable part, but I haven’t seen his acting skills so yeah lol
He’s still Peeta when I read the books, but I’ll take him for Finnick. I did want a 6′+ older-looking Finnick, but if they’re casting young for Johanna (ie Zoe), then Hunter would be a good fit for Finnick. He has a great range, which is why I wanted him for Peeta
I’ve already gone on record as saying this casting wouldn’t thrill me, but I can see Hunter Parrish (or someone like him) perhaps being a more likely scenario than many of those suggested previously. Garrett Hedlund (who’s grown to be my personal fave), Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch, Glee cast members, etc. would all seem to have possible scheduling issues due to prior project commitments. With Weeds finishing up, I read he will be promoting a cd, but a brief internet search on my part, didn’t turn up too much acting-wise. So, scheduling and committing to 2-3 more movies wouldn’t seem to be that much of an issue. Also, considering he still looks young for his age and is on the relatively small side, he might often be approached to play younger characters. Playing someone his age, who will no doubt get some scenes of depth, particularly in Mockingjay, might very well be greatly appealing to him. Plus, he seems pretty attached mentally to the project.
I guess I’m beginning to interpret the fact that this is still dragging on, and meetings still being taken, to mean that none of the previously mentioned names will be on board for whatever reasons. And I have spent way too much time thinking about and responding to this topic!
you guys know finnick is only 24
If everyone could go watch the first few minutes of Weeds season 7 premire episode, you would all see how perfect Hunter is for Finnick. My parents watched Weeds and my mom got excited just seeing that scene in Copenhagen how perfect Hunter would be for Finn. His personality in that scene is absolutetly perfect!
I love Hunter as Finn and would be thrilled if he got the part !
Well, if he does get the role, I don’t think age will be an issue. Those make-up artists can do wonders. And remember, they made Jen look 16, and Liam look 17. That’s a 5 year difference with their real ages. They can make whoever gets the part look older.
@Katie thanks.
I saw someone older in my mind, but I think he’d be great. I’m leaving it up to the casting crew…they’ve done so well with the cast so far.
@Emily414 – Yes that was me who put the picture with the article, I can’t take the credit though as that was the picture used by The Daily Beast
I did think it was a very good fit though.
Wow, what a list of comments. As for me, I like that he is passionate but I’m still not entirely sold. Probably because I am in the Finnick-as-a-man camp (GarrettHedlund), and Hunter still looks a bit boyish to me. But, Finnick does have that boyish charm, hmmm…
I am also concerned about these announcements, kaleiney put it very well, how many more of the “I’m interested too” meetings are there going to be? I am hoping maybe that this interview is a little dated and Hunter talked with producers some days ago, I’d really like to think that Lionsgate are pretty far into the process and just about ready to make some announcements.
Aren’t they supposed to start filming in September anyway? They’ve really got to make some decisions, because the new cast will definitly have some training to do, especially the tributes.
He’s not attractive at all. I’ll be so disapointed if they cast him. I NEED Garriet Hedlund to be Finnick.
so glad josh got peeta instead of him. i don’t think he’d make a good finnick either.
but even though he isnt ideal, im sure if he does get the part of finnick, he’ll probably do a great job.
@Tash, this is what I think, I think they know exactly who their going to cast and could possibly be cast already just not it going public yet. That vid can be indeed dated a bit or the context of “in talks with” could mean anything ranging from little to nothing. I find it suspicious Finnick casting speculation and rumors died out significantly and then now this vid of Hunter mentioning Finnick ummmmm…..very weird. I really do think they have the jump on Finnick already and we just don’t know yet. Praying its Garrett, that would be everything for me.
Garrett Hedlund!
@Tash – yeah, you’d think “Finnick-as-a-man” would go without saying. Regardless of how he may look – and reasonable people can differ on that point – his experiences have given him the soul of someone much older than his chronological age. Over time, that usually comes to be reflected in someone’s physical appearance, which is why – wait for it, folks – Finnick should look like a man.

An argument for the general public’s consideration that has links to some of the best of Hunter’s performances.
Definitely worth a browse.
@Destined – I hope you’re right there
Have to agree that it is very suspicious, the focus switched very quickly to Johanna and then now it seems back again, but unlike previous weeks there haven’t been any follow up stories/different names mentioned the day after.
@SPM – Exactly, very well put
Its like they want Finnick to be the big reveal, keeping everyone on pins and needles but effectively shushing rumors by spilling the tea about Johanna, while still making sure its on everyone’s mind by bringing it up ever so often with mentioning Finnick just cause. I def wouldn’t be surprised if Johanna was announced before him. That seems like the angle they’re playing from. And we’re just tweedling our thumbs in the meantime…..le sighs.
@Peetaferlife. I would be jumping up and down if he got the part. He’s got the looks, got the acting, I think he’d be perfect!!!!
I remember before people were saying that passion is not enough to get a role; like the case with Kristen Bell. While I appreciate his passion, and I wish there could have been a role for Peeta’s brothers…I cannot see him as Finnick. I believe there is a reason why Finnick and Johanna should be played by older actors (or at least look older than Jennifer Lawrence). We can see the scope of the Hunger Games in the quell since it the tributes are from different ages. Having principal characters like Finnick and Johanna look like they are characters from high school makes the appeal of the quell and the gravity to the games less IMHO.
I don’t think he physically matches the part (I epxceted them to go taller and older), but I’d be cautiously optimistic if he was cast for two reasons:
1. All the reasons I thought he would make a wonderful Peeta would make him a fabulous Finnick. He can do subtle, he’s charismatic (more goofy than suave, but I’m sure he could pull it off), and he’s good looking.
2. I doubt the producers would invite him to read for Finnick if they didn’t think he was good, since they have already seen him in action. It makes me wonder if his age didn’t count against him for the role of Peeta- not that it cost him the part completely, just that it was a consideration.
@anvilgate– completely agreed. i’ve always felt the idea of finnick and johanna being older than katniss and peeta shouldn’t be just because the book says they are, but also because it’s an important psychological component in katniss’s fears about the quell. these aren’t just 22 new kids they’re going to be fighting against, not just a bunch of children who are probably just as scared as they are; these are people who have been where katniss has been, but have had years to come to terms with it, while katniss and peeta are still struggling with their situation. so in my head at least, it makes sense for finnick and johanna to be older in the sense that they have more experience, more of an intimidating presence, are (as far as katniss knows) more stable about their condition as victors, are used to the pressure and the crowds and the lifestyle, and feel more confident than katniss feels about going back into the quell. the fact that her and peeta are literally two against the world is a very important component to her state of mind going into the quell, one that doesn’t even have to be explained in words in the movie so long as you choose the right actors for finnick, johanna and some of the others.
so while i wouldn’t mind if they cast hunter parrish so long as he accurately portrays finnick’s personality (same with zoe aggeliki as johanna), i would have preferred slightly older actors just so they would have that obvious disparity right off the bat. being older isn’t just about the actor’s age or about them LOOKING older; make-up can fix that, but that’s not all it takes. it’s a question of on-screen presence. i trust the casting people are taking that into account, as they did for the first movie.
NO
@Christine Hahahaha! But I think his face is good for it otherwise, yeah, he’s a little small for FInnick!
I remember when Hunter’s name was bandied about for being cast at Peeta the main complaint was that he was too old to play Peeta, yet he’s too young to play Finnick, even though he’s the same age as finnick.
I think Parrish would make a great Finnick, he’s very attractive and he’s a pretty good actor.
I think he’d make a pretty good Finnick!
For how I imagined him while reading, this guy looks closest of my minds Finnick! =) Good luck to him!
I haven’t seen him in anything, so i don’t know about his acting ability, but he definatly fits my mental image of Finnick.
