Hunger Games Movie News

There’s still about 500 more days until ‘Catching Fire’ hits the theaters, but ‘Mockingjay’ Part 1 and Part 2 have already received their official release dates.
Lionsgate will release two films based on Mockingjay, the third book in Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will bow worldwide November 21, 2014, followed by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 on November 20th, 2015. The first sequel, Catching Fire, is coming out November 22, 2013.
So I guess November just became our new favorite month!
And, I don’t know aobut you, but I am SO GLAD that we won’t have to wait two years between movies next time around!

OMG!!!!! Shutup!!!!! I think it is a great idea!!!! If it is 2 parts then ill be in Three movies!!!! Catching Fire, Mockingjay 1 and mockingjay 2!!!!
no there a 4 movies
I dont think theres enough in Mockingjay to be split into two movies. It will be like Harry Potter where Part 1 will turn out to be quite dull and Part 2 will be filled with the most exciting parts. I think they should split Catching Fire instead since the book had so many things going on.
I totally disagree Erin. There’s so much in Mockingjay that is HAS to be two movies. We don’t see the majority of the rebellion, we don’t see the rescue operation, we don’t see the end of the rebellion, we don’t see Katniss’ trial. All of this can’t just be explained away in a movie like it is in the book. I don’t even think it should have happened that way in the book. And then they have to wrap up Katniss and Gale and then do the epilogue. You can’t fit all that into one movie.
I Agee catching fire had all the action why draw out the last movie by then it will be getting boring besides mocking jay is the best book
The reason why they are making M
The reason why they are making Mocking Jay into two different movies is because it is becoming more common for the last movie in a series to be two movies.
Wow, SPM — that would be amazing if they showed what Peeta went through, especially the hijacking — it would help to show the depth of Peeta’s love for Katniss that it took mind-altering drugs to shake. I wouldn’t mind at all if CF and Mockingjay stray from the pure Katniss point of view.
I think Tash is right that the whole last scene in Catching Fire will be truncated. We might see the hovercraft coming in to rescue Katniss. It would also be interesting to see how/why they could not rescue Peeta. I had a lot of trouble visualizing the last moments in the arena — that’s one of the things I hope the movie improves on. I think the movie could then end with Katniss forced onto the hovercraft, looking back in time to see Peeta left behind (or perhaps being captured by a genuine Capitol hovercraft), and then seeing Haymitch and Plutarch together.
Would they dare leave it up in the air? Has Katniss been captured or rescued? Are Plutarch and Haymitch the good guys or the bad guys? And where are they going? And what happened to Peeta? It would certainly be a cliff-hanger.
Alternatively, the movie could just end with Katniss blowing up the arena and losing consciousness. Cut to the Districts erupting in outright rebellion. We see the war begin, we know Katniss is the catalyst, but we don’t know if she lives or dies — and the whole hovercraft scene then becomes the opening of Mockingjay 1.
As someone pointed out above, if they choose to escape the limitations of Katniss’s POV they could blow this thing wide open in terms of story content. It would be great to see the story get the respect it deserves. I’ve long thought there should’ve been four books in the series just for that reason. There’s powerful stuff in MJ that is worthy of much longer and deeper treatment than it got.
@Hana – sorry, you were one of the people pointing out the POV thing. And your speculations make me realize I’ll be on the edge of my seat in the theater watching all this crazy exciting stuff play out…which is kind of silly because I already know what’s going to happen.
Gawd, if Katniss sees Peeta getting picked up by the Capitol…ugh, the heartbreak. We better get the freakout scene there that we were denied in THG.
@Paige– you don’t sound dumb at all, don’t worry. it’s a very valid question. well, i think any scenes of her breaking down have the potential to be heart-wrenching, whether it be in 13 or after prim’s death. they could be very, very poignant, especially with the way jennifer doesn’t even need dialogue for her emotions to come across in a scene. personally, though, the one scene that really got to me in the book was when she was filming a propo and couldn’t even get the words out because that’s the moment she realized they were probably torturing peeta to get to HER, and she breaks down crying and haymitch has to console her. just imagining that scene in the film, jennifer’s expression going from “ok, i can do this, i have to do this” to “oh god, i can’t do this, i need peeta back” would be… ahhhh, i’m getting chills again. i can’t wait for this movie to come out.
@crystal– i agree with you, except for one point: i don’t think it HAD to be two movies, i think they could’ve pulled it off in one if they kept to katniss’s PoV. but i definitely agree that two movies gives them the chance to expand on everything we didn’t see in the book, not to mention add even more action to the first half, and that would be fantastic. so i don’t think splitting it in two movies was necessary, but i think it can be genius is they do it right.
@hana– i think straying from katniss’s PoV could be a good thing for mockingjay especially. seeing most events happen through katniss’s eyes was great for THG because that book was meant to emphasize the reality television/cultural desensitizing angle, to define the basis of the series’ meta social commentary which was directed at each one of us, individually. but mockingjay is in its heart a war movie, and more than that a movie about the human condition, and i think seeing glimpses of what’s going on with the other characters could make that theme come across as more universal, which is what war movies usually go for– that’s why they hit so hard. so it’s not only good for us as fans because we’re getting to see new stuff, it’s also good for the critics because they get to see more depth in the characters and themes.
(oh hey, is it obvious yet that i’m one of the few fans out there who actually loved mockingjay?)
Interesting. Not sure how I feel about Mockingjay getting the split treatment, but I’m sure it’s all for the best.
Also…basically, the Hunger Games franchise has officially replaced Twilight. (or it will, come next November) That, or November is just the month for uber-popular YA movies based on books now.
And I’ll be 19 when MJ part 2 comes out.
I know this question might be a little theme changer but…is Jena Malone officially in CF? because in IMDB website she already appears as Johanna Mason…
SPM & Carla, you are so right about the powerful stuff in Mockingjay. The war really is at the center of MJ — it’s not an anti-war novel, but it is extraordinarily open-eyed about the price both soldiers and civilians pay in even the most just wars.
All the comments about ‘I’ll be 22 when….” make me wonder if Lionsgate might decide to forgo the PG-13 rating for Mockingjay 1-2 since most of the fan base should be old enough to handle it. At least they might not try so hard for PG-13 that they soft-pedal the horror and brutality of the story and the suffering that Katniss and Peeta endure.
I would not be at all upset if they opt to pitch the films to more mature audiences. If they do, those Oscars might actually happen.
Well, My birthday is December 11th and now I know what my birthday parties will be for the next three years! Also, I am very glad that they’re splitting Mockingjay. Too much stuff they would have to leave out. Just like Hp1&2 and Breakingdawn 1&2. I read the series in 2010 while I was 12 and the last movie will come out just before I turn 18… O.O I’ll be a Senior everybody! I’m so excited for it all! More time in the Hunger Games Fandom the better!
SPOILER for third book: For Mockingjay Part 1, I predict, will end with Peeta waking up and trying to choke Katniss. maaaayyyybe
@Carla-spoken like a true fan. I completely agree with all of your last points. I don’t even need to say anything because you pretty much covered exactly what I was thinking
(just so you know, I join you in the minority of absolutely LOVING Mockingjay haha)
also @Dan the problem with imdb is that anyone with a pro account can edit actor profiles, so someone probably heard of the role being offered to Jena and edited her profile preemptively. As of right now nothing is confirmed by Lionsgate about Jena Malone.
Thanks @emily414 I was starting to believe that I missed the news….
@carla Thanks for specifying! I think I need to re-read Mockingjay! I hope this doesn’t sound bad, but I’m actually looking forward to Prim’s death scene, to see the look on Jennifer’s face. I really think she will take that scene and run with it! Hopefully that didn’t come off wrong! I also definitely agree with you about the scene filming the propos!
My 21st and 22nd are going to be the best birthdays ever when Part 1 & Part 2 are released! So excited :] ..even though they’re released 10 days after..
I’m still hoping they change it so Prim lives. Prim getting a serious injury from the blast, leaving her life hanging in the balance, would be enough to motivate Katniss to kill Coin and go a little nuts. This is one case where I wouldn’t mind a Hollywood ending.
@Hana – Wow, you took my original idea and came up with an even more spine chilling cliffhanger, that was brilliant
I am even more excited for the possibilities of CF now and the opening of MJ part 1.
@carla – I didn’t dislike Mockingjay persay, but its definitely not my favourite. I think my biggest problem with it, which has been used as a reasoning for two films, is the lack of explanation. I know the book is from Katniss’ POV and I loved it for that, but like someone said above there are so many 1-sentence or short paragraph answers. And well, the ending. I think Katniss (and Peeta) deserved a few more pages. I loved the ending, so hopefully the film will keep it the same and expand on it a little.
@SPM – It certainly would be an interesting change of dynamics if Prim lived, I was horrified when that happened in the book – especially after so much death already. As a few people have commented above also (which does sound terrible, but still), I also look forward to Jen’s scenes after this, killing Coin, her trial etc If she doesn’t get an oscar nod for that then there is something wrong with the system.
Thanks Tash…of course the minute I posted my comment I thought how horrific it would be to sit through either of my two nightmare endings on the big screen….
I agree that the most important thing that will save Mockingjay-2 from being utterly depressing is if both Peeta and Katniss clearly find a kind of salvation for each other and their children at the end. I’m hoping their recovery and re-connection gets enough screen time to pull us all out of post-Mockingjay traumatic distress syndrome.
Even though it’s horrible and traumatic, I think Prim’s death (and Boggs) are important to show since they illustrate the inevitable price of war from civilian and ‘friendly fire’ casualties.
@Hana – Hahah yes, sitting through it would be an entirely different story! I remember the scream at the beginning of THG, man I sat bolt upright in my seat lol I think we’re all going to run through the full gamut of emotions again for the next 3 films
(which is a good thing, because I had the same feelings I had from the book watching the film, and I want that to be re-produced again)
OMG WOW I’ll be almost 24 when the last one comes out (I’ll turn 24 two months after it comes out).
Now I just feel old
24? LOL…kids today.
@SPM: yeah! I just smile when I read posts like: “OMG, I´ll be 18 when MJ2 comes out, so old!”
BTW, how are you?
I’m not very happy that it is being split into two parts. It worked well for Harry Potter because there was no way all that content could be fit into one movie; the running script was 500 pages long! Twilight was pointless, no doubt about it.
But I always felt the Hunger Games series worked better as a trilogy and I think that expanding the worst part of the series is unnecessary and a major money grab. Depsite this, I admit this may give more time to go into what Suzanne glazed over for no reason in Mockingjay, so that might be a positive outcome. But really, Lionsgate isn’t doing this because of the content, it’s a major money grab. I just hope they don’t end the series on a sour note like Suzanne did.
Use what the apparently “need” to do and make it so we couldn’t even imagine what it would be like in one movie; take advantage of it! I would hate to see two dull and stretched out films after the first two films were so great (or hopefully Catching Fire will be).
Well, that’s my rant done. Please, Lionsgate, don’t ruin this series.
the movies will be so good because the directors will leave you wanting to know what happens next or if they add in other scens
@She – very well, thanks.
And you? Were you able to get some good Hunger Games merchandise? I just downloaded the soundtrack from Amazon because it was on sale for $3 and I LOVE IT.
@Tony I agreed with you when I first heard the news about splitting Mockingjay. But if you had taken the time to read the comments, a lot of people are happy about getting another movie. There are so many things we miss because of Katniss’ perspective, so they coypd expand on those scenes we miss. And how do YOU know why Lionsgate decided to split it, unless you are an executive there you have no idea.
I am glad to know the dates and will keep those dates open but I just wish I could see them sooner.
Howdy outstanding website! Does running a blog like this require a massive amount work?
I’ve virtually no knowledge of programming but I was hoping to start my own blog soon. Anyway, if you have any suggestions or techniques for new blog owners please share. I know this is off subject however I just needed to ask. Thanks!
Im not so sure if I like the idea of Mockingjay being split up into two part cause we will have to wait longer for the movie to come out. Besides were will they split it up into two theres really no good place if u want to have a long movie then part 2 be short I just really dont see the point! For all u Hunger Games fanatics out there like me, Happy Hunger Games and May the Odds Be Ever In Your Favor!
Your just going to ruin all of the movies if u split Mockingjay into two parts, total “money grab” just dont worry about the money for one second and have the audience enjoy the movie just like they did for The Hunger Games do what u did for that movie and every thing will be just fine! Trust me! I loved the first movie and if u dont split Mockingjay into two parts I bet u, u will have more people coming to see Mockingjay than u will if u split it into two! Please follow my advise and u will make millions all because u didnt make two movies out of Mockingjay! Follow my advise cuz I’ll be one of those kids!
It will make more work for the actors and will tire them out. Plus it will just waist ur time, u can save one year of ur life if u dont split up the movie. Do u know what I’m saying?
II have read all these comments and i am dissapointed with half of them because i’ve red Mockingjay a thousand time along with the rest of te series and i agree with the publishers that it should be 2 films because I do see alot of ACTION in the book. I know this because I always read books. So its a wonderful idea to make 2 films for the mockingjay especially because of the last chapter.
You already know therefore significantly relating to this subject, made me individually believe it from a lot of numerous angles. Its like women and men are not involved until it is one thing to accomplish with Lady gaga! Your personal stuffs outstanding. All the time care for it up!
Man im alittle pissed i just looked at the release dates for these movies and they are the daty after thanksgiving and our town does midnight showings that we ALWAYS go to but this NOW conflicts with our black friday shopping which is how we buy lots of toys for our son, why that week and not another!!!
i think mockingjay should be 2 parts
they should end the movie when they go 2 save PETA
AWESOME!! i don’t care if it is split or not…I just can’t wait to see it!!!!
