District 14 Ponders Possible Splitting Points for ‘Mockingjay’ Movies
Amanda Bell of the District 14 column over at NextMovie has written up a list of possible points in which the Mockingjay movies could be split. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Peeta, the Messenger
There’s a moment in “Mockingjay” when the Capitol presents their new prisoner Peeta Mellark to plea for the rebels to discontinue their dangerous revolutions. They’ve been holed up in District 13 and filming anti-Capitol propaganda videos in the districts, and they’ve already experienced the fallout from one ill-fated trip to District 8.
When Peeta’s first appearance on Capitol TV doesn’t work, the government tries again, this time with a Peeta shown to be savagely beaten. Peeta — obviously scripted — nixes the diplomacy and addresses Katniss directly in the interview. Katniss rightly interprets this as a direct warning to District 13 that an attack is imminent. The group dives lower into the holding and the attack indeed begins. The sound of those bombs dropping upon the rebels’ stronghold sure would leave us trembling and ravenous for resolve.
Deadly Rescue Mission
Katniss takes a hit on one of her propos missions for District 13, and when she wakes up in the hospital, she gets some troubling news: Gale and others have been sent on a rescue mission to retrieve Peeta and Finnick Odair’s love Annie. It’s a dangerous ordeal. Katniss faces the reality that she may lose not one but both of the boys she cares about, and there’s nothing she can do to stop it … Scary, scary!

I like “Peta Runs… Sort Of”
I agree with most people that they should split right when he starts to strangle Katniss, then have her black out and that be the end. Lol I’m trying to imagine the fangirls’ reactions who haven’t read the books.
I think the last one the best ‘ A Wayward Peeta Joins The Team’ my only issue with that would be if there was enough events after that to make a whole other movie I mean I suppose there is but it just have to be drug out a little longer maybe I’m not remembering right…..its been awhile since i’ve reread Mockingjay……I’ll think I’ll reread it pretty soon.
Well, I actually like the “Take a Bullet” Part, that would definetely leave every moviegoer who hasn’t read the books open-mouthed. Another possible for me is the new Peeta, when he tries to strangle her…
The other options, in my oppinion, are either too soon or too late in the book.
wouldnt it be awesome if when peeta is being saved, he asks where Katniss is? Then, people will be like,”O.K. lovers reunion. Its gonna get mushy.” Then, when he attacks her, people would think back and say,”Whoah! So thats why he wanted to know where she was.”
I think the best scene for the movie to end is when they finally rescue Peeta and he wraps his hands around Katniss’s throat. I think that would be a upper interesting place to stop the movie! People who have read the book will know what will happen, but for the few that haven’t they would be left utterly and completely shocked!
I think we all can agree the best place to end it would be when Peeta is strangling Katniss. It would definetly provide the best hook and supply a generous amount of shock and awe.
I’ve heard some people say that they should split it when Plutarch is explaining the pods and Finnick and Katniss say “Let the 76th Hunger Games begin.” I think that would be pretty cool.
I actually quite like all of the suggested splits, but most of them occur quite late in the book, and I’m not sure they could pad out a second film that much.
I would like to see it ending somewhere around Peeta’s return from the rescue, my thought is that we wouldn’t need to see her being choked it could just end (as I commented on the other article) with Gale walking in from the rescue all bandaged up and Katniss looking at him like “Well, where is he!?”
That would still give you a cliffhanger of if the mission succeeded or failed, and you could begin MJ part 2 with the choking instead, really setting the film running for the rest of the events that happen.
That is also, of course, assuming they don’t change it for the film so that Katniss goes on the rescue as well.
I think they should split it when peeta is strangling Katniss!!!!! Also, does anyone else think Liam Payne would make a good Finnick…lol?????
I’d say neither of those, because Peeta’s message wouldn’t leave enough stuff for the first movie, and splitting it right at the announcement of the rescue would gut the following scene, where Finnick and Katniss talk on camera to create a distraction. It’s such a powerful scene, I couldn’t imagine them wrecking it.
Katniss Takes a Bullet is my bet from those five
I think the strangle scene would be an epic ending for part one because I dont think it is very predictable because while reading the book you seriously dont know who she will pick and if Katniss’ life will be safe with Peeta there and if he will recover. The bullet scene seems a little to predictable because I mean seriously did we think she would die there were like 100 pages left in the book and she is the main character. I think it is similar in the movies because there is still a part 2 so we know she wouldnt die. Maybe it might fool some people who havent heard of the book, but the strangle scene seems better in my opinion
The scene where peeta comes in while they are attacking the capitol is too close to the end. And the scene with the bombs is good to but the strangle scene is like the ultimate cliff hanger!
I also think Tash has a good idea with gale coming in and katniss asking where he is and then there is like silence and the movie ends.
I still think the strangle scene will make everyone want to come watch part 2 even if they were mad from the long 1 year cliff hanger wait. lol
I think the strangle scene would be great! (: sooo suspensful and scary!! The scene where Katniss wakes up and haymitch tells her Gale left to rescue Peeta would be cool, but Im not sure if people would realize like how dangerous it would be for him to go there and like she could lose both of them, like she would have to say something to make it more meaningful if you know what i mean,or i sound crazy

I like the first idea where it cuts off at Peeta telling D13 about the attack, but it wouldn’t leave enough for the 1st movie. Sounds like it will have to cut off at the choking scene. Although it would be cool if they used Kiara’s idea and focus MJ 2 on the Capitol siege. Suzanne Collins could write some awesome sub plots into the movie that are not in the books
I completely agree on splitting mockingjay into two parts will be a great idea, But I dont like that lionsgate is rushing into the series so quickly. I think it would be better if mockingjay part 1 would be released in 2015 so they can have a whole year after catching fire to plan out the whole movie instead of just rushing into making it. And then release part 2 in 2016. Just my thoughts
I totally agree, although I think catching fire should also be split into 2 parts:). I don’t like the fact that MockinGjay is coming out so soon. It gives me the impression that they just want to rush through everything, just like what Suzanne Collins did in the book. I think that they should postpone Catching Fire because it has a lot of details and shouldn’t be rushed, like HG. I was very disappointed with HG as they cut out people like Madge Undersee whom I feel is a very important part of the whole trilogy. HG also cut out a lot of parts. WAS SUZANNE COLLINS IN HER RIGHT MIND WHEN SHE AGREED TO CUT THOSE PARTS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

MJ Part1 should definitely end when Peeta strangles Katniss, then she passes out. Then MJ Part2 starts with her in the woods of District 2 having a flashback (with Plutarch, Haymitch and Beetee explaining to her what happened to Peeta). While she touches her still red-ish neck! Come on, picture it!!!
My favorite on the list is when Peeta is rescued and reacts to Katniss. Personally, I’d rather the split be a little after that, when Katniss is watching Delly Cartwright talk to the hijacked Peeta. When Peeta starts screaming that Katniss is a mutt, Katniss decide to go to (nearly impossible to win) District 2. I think “Send me to Two” would be a great spot to end the movie. It looks like she’s given up on Peeta and she is ready to throw herself full force into the rebellion. Starting Part 2 in District 2 could be cool, too. Clips of hijacked Peeta trying to recover in District 13 could be thrown in for good measure.
Out of that list, it has to be Deadly Rescue Mission or Peeta returns. The first one (Peeta the Messaenger) happens to soon in the book, so there wouldn’t be enough in movie 1. The last two happen too late in the book, so there wouldn’t be enough for movie 2.
Katy Bug, I totally agree! While I think that Peeta’s Return is a good splitting point, I would HATE for it to be a fade-to-black type of thing while he’s strangling her. And I don’t think they would do that, anyway. I think it would be more along the lines of you suggested, there’d be an additional scene tacked on at the end where Katniss is reflecting on what happened, watching Peeta as he’s going crazy/calling her a mutt and seeing her reaction.
I think it should end after Peeta and Katniss’s reunion. After Katniss wakes up from being strangled, she should have a conversation with Haymitch about Peeta, with Haymitch saying how uncertain he is that he can even be saved. Then Katniss goes to the area Peeta’s being held and watches him from the glass window in the book. After that, cut to the credits.
I think that Part One should end when Peeta comes to the Capitol to be part of the Star Squad. The Star Squad would be talking and then Peeta just walks off of the hovercraft (or whatever brings him there) and just nonchalantly walks off.
I feel like they are going to cut it where Peeta starts choking Katniss. That will leave everyone who hasn’t read the books crying.XD I’ve been saying this since I knew Mockingjay was going to be split into two books. I actually just mentioned it last night to my friends.

I definitely think it should be right after Peeta strangles Katniss. I’ve always thought that would be a good place to split it. Even though I’m still upset that they’re splitting it in the first place.
District 14? They should be splitting Catching Fire…in my opinion…but eh, whatever. I think they are splitting Mockingjay to get in some information they skipped in the earlier movies. They did that with Harry Potter, remember? I liked Harry Potter until I saw the Hunger Games. I’m a Potter Tribute…lol
why are they splitting it? I don’t mind sitting in a theater for 5 hours, as long as it’s a good movie. I wonder if when they are done with all the movies a theater will do a special where you can pay 4x the price and watch one right after the other, I think one did it once, but I’m not sure. But, trust me I would pay that price for good movies, wouldn’t you?
