Grant Gustin Confirms He Auditioned for Finnick

I like him for the role.

He looks too young. Yes I know he’s older than Jennifer Lawrence, but he looks way too young for the part. Imagine how he would look like next to Jena Malone? While he is good looking – he’s not striking enough to be Finnick Odair.

@SPM perhaps he hasn’t admitted being out yet to boost his popularity. THG is now a huge franchise, any actor that gets on board will have a boost in their resume.

I’m sure he’s super nice, and I’ll be the first to say that he was fantastic on Glee, but he’s not my Finnick. I’m favoring Garrett Hedlund right now
And as for Johanna.. I think Naya Rivera would kill it (in a good way!), but I’m open to all possibilities! I didn’t imagine Johanna as vividly as Finnick.

@paige– i’m pretty sure half the fandom would DIE. literally. and quite possibly more than one person would try to kill the casting director/nina jacobson/francis lawrence while at it. good god, that would give a whole new definition to the word “backlash.” the anarchist in me kinda wants it to happen just because it would be so hilarious to watch.

@tash– it could be, but for once i won’t be that cynical. i think it’s very possible the reason these rumors are leaking is because these guys are fan favorites, but i don’t think that’s why the casting people “let” them audition in the first place. i remember that liam has said in interviews that he wanted the role so badly, he told his representation that he’d burn down their house if they didn’t get him an audition. he was kidding, obviously, but i figure it’s the same kind of pressure from these guys who are such vocal fans of the trilogy– their agents would basically be hounding lionsgate relentlessly until their clients got an audition. i’m thinking the casting team had a very basic checklist of characteristics all finnick hopefuls had to have, and anyone who complied with it got an audition. (except possibly twilight cast members). so it’s no surprise all of these “super fans” would at least get a chance.

@AnvilGate– that’s definitely possible. it’s why it was so class act of trevor donovan to let everybody know he was out of the running. he didn’t milk it for everything it could give, like other actors might. good chap there.

@Tash – I’m absolutely that cynical. These people are about money first, which is a double-edged sword for the fans.

@AnvilGate – I’d buy it. There was some dude who tried to do that on the Victor’s Village blog, RTing things from his fans who wanted him for Finnick and just coming off like an arse. He must’ve known all along he had no shot, but he played it as long as he could for the publicity.

@carla Haha me too! Although in the very unlikely event that one of One Direction was cast, I would probably be plotting my revenge as well. I feel protective over Finnick, even if he’s not real . If they cast someone from One Direction, I would probably explode. I don’t even think they are good singers, lol. I’m probably the only 14 year old girl that thinks that though.

@Tash What you said makes sense! I feel like Hunter Parrish just wants to get into this fandom no matter which role. As someone else said it would definitely boast your resume.

@JJ: Thank you for realizing the true point of my rant when others were too thick and caught up by their own anger to see it.
My rant was only in spite of those who “voiced their opinion” which seems to be the same amongst everyone, so in technicallity, theres only like, three opinions out there: Those who think Grant Gustin, which this entire post is actually about, those who still think Garret Hedlund, who has not been mentioned once in this, and those who think someone else, who like Hedlund, are not mentioned at all in this post. Then there is MY opinion, which yes, IS in fact an opinion, about those who do not see that it is entirly pointless to say who you want to play Finnick. This post was about confirming that Gustin has aditioned and who poor saps all turned it into your own selfish way of displaying something that Lionsgate will not even take into consideration. They will, however take into consideration those who have actually confirmed auditioning. It is still unconfirmed whether Hedlund has auditioned. Yes, I know that Celeb Gossiper Lainey has said that he has, but Celebrity gossip is not always reliable.
On a side note: Those of you who try to contradict me are just as worse as I am. Thank you.

@paige– well, you’re certainly the only 14-year-old i’ve talked to who doesn’t like them. i’m way out of their demographic, though, as is a big portion of the HG fandom, so i doubt such an announcement would go over well.

@heather– (not trying to stir things further or anything, just want to understand your point, if that’s okay). so what you’re saying is: you have no problem with people who comment along the lines of “i don’t think grant gustin would be good for the role because of these reasons,” but instead your earlier comment was directed at people who dislike gustin simply because he’s not garrett hedlund (or some other actor they favor)? did i get that right? it’s just that beginning your comment by saying “who cares if he isn’t your perfect finnick” makes it sound like your rant is directed at gustin-detractors in general, or anyone who has a “mental picture” of finnick, or at least that’s what it read like to me. so i can understand why some people reacted like you were telling them they can’t have an opinion, but it may have just been an issue of miscommunication…

@carla – I think you’re right there with fan favourites and we can weave that into my crazy theory I guess it’s always true that we are going to hear more about the fan favourites than “the other guys”.

I suppose we could also consider the fact that seemingly everyone in Hollywood wants a piece of the franchise to be a form of flattery Very very grateful to have Nina Jacobson at the helm of all this, steadying the ship so to speak.

Well, my Finnick is still James Gaisford, but he would be way better than Robert Pattinson or Zac Efron! But he is a little too young for Finnick.

Surely the casting people are on the same page with us fans? I’m getting worried. How did Grant get an audition? Why are they even considering people who look like they’re 16???

His looks can fit for Finnick…if Finnick was at the same age as Katniss, which is not said in the books. Finnick is older than Katniss. Grant just looks too young.

@Heather – I promise you, you’re a lot angrier than I am. Besides, you do yourself and your arguments a great disservice by making such blanket assumptions about other people’s thought processes on who they want for these roles. Saying I’m too “thick” to understand that I only want Garrett for Finnick because someone told me to like him – and that I could therefore never consider anyone else – is a convenient way to dismiss opinions you don’t like. Some of us actually form opinions by – wait for it – thinking over various considerations and deciding on a conclusion that makes sense to us.

Just something to think about.

It seems like casting Finnick is a lot harder than casting Katniss or Peeta. I wasn’t here last year when the storm over the casting happened; all I know was that some people were extremely upset.

I suppose, more so with Finnick since he’s described to be something extraordinary. While we all have our preferences in men, we really have to take into context what the ‘Capitol’ considers to be extraordinary. Finnick is not about being good looking or HOT — he’s about being extremely extraordinary. I don’t know Grant Gustin — Glee isn’t my thing (yes I’m over 25 and I think I’ve passed the appeal of Glee). Sure he’s pleasing to the eyes but my over 25 eyes (and experience) doesn’t exactly qualify him as extraordinary.

Most of the over 25 crowd have certain actors in mind for Finnick and while we do not always agree on our top pick; one thing is certain we are looking for MEN to play the part. Our Finnick is not a senior in highschool He is accomplished — he’s someone who can probably be the guy in Fifty Shades of Gray or Magic Mike. While the over 25 crowd isn’t the only percentage of the THG fandom; most critics attribute the success of the movie because the over 25 crowd actually supported it. To ignore this crowd now would be detrimental to the overall success of the franchise.

So there…Justin Beiber can audition and that’s fine. But realistically, does he have a chance that’s something else all together.

@SPM I’m actually going to go ahead and agree with you on this one… Because @Heather pretty much goes and says that anyone who actually voices their opinion ON A PUBLIC FORUM is really dense… or at least that’s what I got from it… Personally, I find @Heather’s posts very confusing to read… maybe I am dense Anyway, I think it became fairly evident that she needs to proofread her comments when she said

@AnvilGate – from another over-25-er, word and thank you. I would add that not only is our Finnick not a senior in high school, he also cannot look like a senior in high school (a la Grant). As you say, Capitol citizens certainly wouldn’t find that endearing.

I’m sticking to my theory that Finnick’s world-weariness has begun to take a toll on his physical appearance, such that even though he’s still strikingly handsome, you can see some lines on his face and some sadness in his eyes if you look closely enough. That rules out the pretty boys.

THIS. He should be jaw-dropping for all fans, including the 25+ set. He was the hottest male celebrity in the Capitol, and adult women were willing to pay a lot for him, so it’s fitting for him to be undeniably gorgeous. As long as the actor has the ability to convincingly portray vulnerability, I’m fine with whatever adult adonis they choose.

@rose– that’s exactly what paige and i were discussing earlier! i don’t know which of the one direction kids this liam is, but grant definitely looks like he could be one of them, at least to me.

No. No. NO!!! He doesn’t look like Finnick, I can’t imagine this boy playing my favourite character, sorry. I imagine him more like Hunter Parrish, Colton Haynes or Garrett Hedlund. But not Grant.

Exactly marion I don’t picture him doing my absolute favorite character (except for Peeta Mellark) and I also think it is more like Hunter Parrish and I sure hope they continue with the idea of using Hunter Parish because he is seriously almost perfect to do him!!!

Finnick is in his early to mid twenties. So is this actor. I, personally, don’t think he is too young. From the work of his I have seen, he can play the capitol’s finnick as well as the Finnick we see in Mockingjay. I don’t necessarily think he’ll be picked but he is a strong candidate.
