Thanks to our reader silon for pointing out that the Japanese trailer for ‘The Hunger Games’ can be viewed at http://hungergames.jp/. It’s a very different trailer from any we’ve seen before and has lots of scenes from the movie that aren’t available in other trailers and clips! What do you think?

I’m wondering how the Japanese would react to this movie. I hope they won’t be making any controversies out of this.

Judging by the videos, they won’t be dubbed. That’s just my assumptions.

Yay, another a trailer! Considering that I wasn’t able to see the movie in theaters, I’ve been watching any trailer I can get my hands on. Just over a month till its on DVD! *squeals*

Ok, just watched it, and I think I like the other ones better. I like the music from the others better, and I think this one gave too much away. Especially when it gave a quick glimpse of Katniss crying by Rue.

This makes sense and its probably different so people don’t go ‘OMG!L Battle Royale rip-off!’

I liked it, and I like the tiny scenes that are not in the movie and the announcer going ‘Hungah Game!’

I liked the trailer better than the US ones.

    LOL… That was awesome!

I really like this trailer, it was totally different than the other ones.

Imagine what we would have done if this was the first official Hunger Games trailer we had? We’d probably go ballistic saying, “Oh my God, that scene!” and such. I like this trailer than our US ones—I loved how it combined parts from the movie, unlike ours, that showed the same things over again with only bits of new ones.

I liked this trailer better than the US ones, mostly because it showed more and hinted at more of the action in the film.
    Hungah Game! :D lol

I like this better then the US trailers. It just somehwo seems to tell the story and hit emotional cues better, making more books fans excited, and more new comers intrugied.

I like how the narrator guy said “HUnger Game”

This trailer was alot better than the US ones. It made the cruelty of the government Panem more abroad and showed a bit more action scenes then the US ones. I was DYING to see some arena action but was disappointed we didn’t see any of that in the US TV spots/trailers and how they didn’t get the government coldness so more abroad. This had both! Oh and…

“HungAH Game!” lol Loved that. :)

Lol, I’m like the only one who liked the US ones better.

Well, I really liked the first US theatrical trailer, but the ones after that didn’t show me anything new and the music wasn’t really good. I really liked this Japanese trailer.

@Lily I’m with you! I still liked the US ones better, especially the first trailer. It seemed to have more of a story, more of a flow. The images just worked together very well.
The first trailer was just perfect.

Off-topic, but… does anyone have any guesses about how they will market Catching Fire? Especially how they will market it in footage without giving anything major away? They’ll have to get the story across because they don’t want to trick the audience into thinking the movie is something it is not. But the Quell…
I think that they’ll use the propaganda footage for Mockingjay. That would be amazing!

haha! not trying to be mean or anything but when ever he said Hungah Game i laughed my butt off!!!

@Savanah. Yeah, it did seem to have more of a story. The Japanese trailer just seemed to be several clips strung together. That, and I wasn’t a fan of the music at all. The music in the U.S. trailer was more….suspensful, or something like that. More Hunger Gamesish, if that makes any sense.

And I have no idea about how they might market it. They might do the same thing they did with the first HG trailer, showing several scenes from the beginning, but limiting how much of the actual Games is shown.

I watched the trailer on cinema, in Tokyo! I was worried that Hunger Games wouldn’t make it in Japan, but when I saw the posters in the cinema I was happy. Movies arrive quite late in Japan always…

I liked the trailer. I can’t compare between the US one and the Japanese one, because things are managed different in both countries. In Japan they seem to like to explain things in the trailers for the Japanese audience. At least I noticed this in many international trailers. In Hunger Games case, I think it’s okay if they do…

It was kind of refreshing to see that the US one wasn’t used in Japan as the main trailer :)

OMG, I was almost crying by the end because of the emotional buildup and then showing Katniss crying over Rue! I think this one did a good job of capturing all the emotions, which maybe resonates better with a Japanese audience? Also, maybe they showed more of what happens because less people have read the book in Japan. Just a guess.

Interesting differences but overall it was awesome!

I seriously didn’t like this trailer. I mean firstly, someone who hasn’t read the books and watched the trailer, it would make absolutely NO sense to them. And secondly, the background music doesn’t fit at all. So, I definitely prefer the US trailer. This is just my opinion :)
May the odds be ever in your favor :P

Was away from the Net this weekend, but I’m glad I checked out this trailer, which I found very interesting, especially since I have Japanese background myself and I can read and speak the language decently. (My username, satsuma, is a type of Japanese citrus.) So let me try to give you a (very rough) translation.

The announcer’s initial comments, roughly translated, go like this:

“In a future world ruled by a wealthy oligarchy, the people of 12 poor districts are forced to have 24 of their youth be selected to fight to the death until only one remains; the ultimate survival game. The name of this game is…the Hunger Game.”

The subtitles for the trailer are not literal translations, but fairly accurate for the most part. There were some, though, that I can’t say were accurate at all. When Katniss tells Prim about the mockingjay pin protecting her, they translate it as “No matter what, I will protect you.” When Prim screams “Nooo” the translation is “Big Sister!”

For the Caesar interview scenes, they translate Caesar’s “The Girl on Fire!” as “The girl to keep an eye on!” Caesar asking Katniss “What did you tell your sister when you volunteered for her?” is translated accurately, but her answer of “That I’d try to win for her” is translated as “That I wouldn’t leave her alone.”

In the Peeta-Katniss clip, Peeta’s “When I die, I still want to be me” is translated as “I won’t let the madness defeat me.” (Makes me wonder if the translator read Mockingjay!) Katniss’s “I can’t afford to think like that” is translated accurately, though.

The Snow-Crane scene: Snow’s comments about hope and a “spark is fine as long as it’s contained” are actually translated as “That girl is going to give the people hope, she’s not needed in this country.”

There’s another trailer I found on that site that seems to be the Japanese version of the second US trailer, but translating that in this post would likely make it too long. In both trailers, they seem to be playing up Katniss as the protective older sister, which would likely resonate with Japanese audiences since older siblings playing a quasi-parental role with younger ones is certainly part of traditional Japanese “family values”.

As for the Battle Royale COntroversy, I can see the marketers focusing on what makes this movie different from Battle Royale, which the trailer seems to do. The Japanese release date is in September and I wonder if the BR controversy delayed the release in any way? Asian countries do tend to get movies months after the US, but it’s a little odd that the movie was shown in China before Japan.

I never knew Katniss freaked out that much when Rue dies. I know Katniss is known to hold back her feelings but in this trailer then there is a lot of scenes where she isnt

Also at the very end the Japanese guy saying ‘The Hunger Games’ sounds like ‘Hunger Game’ with a blocked nose!!! I would also like to see this movie in English form but with the music from the US one because the music does not go with the trailer no matter what.. but they show more footage of the movie and if the Japanese hasnt read the book they would be confused.

An impressive share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a colleague who was conducting a little research on this. And he in fact ordered me lunch simply because I found it for him… lol. So allow me to reword this…. Thank YOU for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending some time to talk about this subject here on your internet site.
