Rumor: Sam Claflin Offered the Role of Finnick Odair

Sam would be fine, way better than many choices here. He’s attractive and has pretty decent acting. My only issue would be that I expect whoever plays Finnick to steal the show, since he overshadowed everyone in the books for me. I saw Snow White, and he was good in it, but he paled in comparison to Hemsworth. I think that would probably happen again.

@she– i remember when i was watching the fourth pirates movie (very reluctantly, because i thought they were stretching the franchise too far, and i don’t like penelope cruz)… when he took off his shirt, i’m pretty sure the audience (myself included) screamed louder than they had with any of the jokes. if that’s not a finnick reaction, i don’t know what is. at least he’s got that part of the character down.

sigh, i just wish they’d confirm something soon. if they’re really planning to wait a week until the next casting announcement i might just go crazy– especially since i’m now fretting about scheduling conflicts! ugh, i can’t take all this back-and-forth we’re getting.

@She-I think maybe we can agree to disagree on Josh H. (as is bound to happen when beloved book characters make their way to the big screen With Peeta/Josh, it wasn’t so much what he had to say, but how he delivered the performance. Again, I do realize that I may not have a popular opinion, but I cannot reconcile his performance with how I imagined that character to be. It didn’t ruin the movie for me (shaky-cam did that) but I have sort of lost some of my enthusiasm for the whole franchise as a result.

Regarding Finnick, I haven’t seen Sam Claflin in anything other that Snow White and the Huntsman, but I am cautiously optimistic that he will do justice to the role. Here’s hoping!

@Ellen – that’s an interesting note re: Snow White. Do you mean his looks, or his acting, or general physical presence…? Because looks-wise, I’ll concede it’s Hemsworth FTW. But acting-wise, I think Sam brings it home.

@SPM, ellen– granted, in SWATH chris hemsworth was SUPPOSED to have the greater presence. that was the whole point of it, the movie was written for it to happen that way. his name was in the title after all. personally, i think sam (and his relationship with the mermaid) was easily the heart of the pirates movie, though, and that’s saying something; it’s not just anyone who can be in a movie with johnny depp and still stand out.

I wish Finnick would be played by MITCH HEWER, he’s not very well known so it would be his breakthrough, he’s a good actor, he’s extremely hot!!! Check out his newest pics.

What I liked about Sam in Pirates was that he brought a lot of layers to a stereotypical religious character. Stuff like that, plus how easily he pulled off the romantic scenes with Astrid, makes me think he’ll do very well with all the aspects of Finnick.

But honestly, Johnny Depp – or at least Jack Sparrow – is not the formidable presence he once was. I felt like he was phoning it in for Pirates.

@SPM, Carla- I agree, Sam did a fine job acting, just his general presence wasn’t as strong as I would expect for a Finnick. Hemsworth (who is definitely the more attractive) is supposed to be the stronger presence obviously, but while reading CF, Katniss/Peeta are supposed to be the stronger presence as well, and reading it, Finnick stole it for me and for sounds like a large quantity of others. And for the first HG movie, I think Effie stole it by a long shot, so it matters not about who is supposed to be the focus based on the script, but who really carries their character home. That was Banks, and I’m concerned it may not be Claflin.

I would not be upset if it was Sam because I know he can act unlike many other choices, and he is attractive, I’m just looking for an actor that I think has something more to say.

No. Garrett just IS Finnick. It’s so hard to describe, but I just can’t picture anyone but Garrett playing Finnick.

i really hope this is not true he looks to old and not anything like i imagined Finnick i mean so far they have done a great job with casting but Finnick is really important in the story so i expected the best casting ever and i have like a few people in mind that would be an ok to perfect Finnick Odair so please let this not be true!

I’m all for whoever they pick. Casting for the first movie was to the T perfect. Besides regardless of what anyone says now we all know everyones gonna fall in love with whoever they pick to play our Finnick.

Girls, remember that they’re not casting based off of which guy is the sexiest. Yes looks is a huge part of it, but so is acting and age. If Garrett Hedlund didn’t understand the character as much as Sam I would much rather have Sam.

Okay I’ve thought about it, and I’ll be able to live with Sam Claflin as Finnick Odair.

Sam can always drop out of Overdrive to do Catching Fire like Jennifer did with Savages to do The Hunger Games,which by the way was a great choice.I like him.He is really nice watch his interviews,but remember it’s just a rumor.

I doubt this is true. Sam Claflin is scheduled to start filming overdrive later this summer and I dont think he would drop out of the film just so suddenly right before filming. Also it was confirmed that Melissa Leo is not going to be playing mags. So as always dont take these rumors seriously.

@Ellen – I think that most of us are feeling that way, happy to have the actor prove us as ‘wrong’. If this does turn out to be true I won’t be disappointed, I would much prefer Sam (who for me still fits into the Finnick-as-a-man camp) over actors such as Pettyfer, Parrish and Gustin.

Either way not everyone is going to be pleased, and I’m glad to read the comments here putting across reasoned thoughts and mature POV’s, not just trashing each other over which actor is better and why. And that’s just one of many reasons I think the HG fandom overall is great.

I hope that for whoever is cast as Finnick (and Johanna etc) we can come on board to support for the rest of the franchise, and not spend the next year and a bit before CF comes out complaining about them. That’s certainly the approach that I’ll be adopting, I want to stay positive about whoever is cast.

never seen him act before, but i’ve heard good things. he isn’t my jaw dropping, gorgeos finnick, but his smile is quite charming.. i might just LOVE him as finnick, and they can alway dye his hair!

Like many have said on this thread, many of us (yes, myself included) were initially skeptical of unhappy about the first film’s casting. I love to be proven wrong. So, I’m willing to give this guy a chance and see what he could do, I’d of course this all even works out at all.

Besides, like Hunter Parrish said in that last interview, there is such a thing as wanting something just too much in life, and I’ve cone to the point where I want Garret for the role just too much. I need to let myself down slowly so that when he doesn’t get cast, I won’t be heartbroken. I pray and hope that Sam can do the job. I don’t see why he couldn’t.

YES! I loved him in Snow White and the Huntsman and really, it doesn’t matter how he looks because they can change that easily. remember Josh Hutcherson has dark hair and brown eyes yeah? and peeta has blonde hair and blue eyes? but josh is still amazing and perfect as peeta So PLEASE let this be true!!

Yeah, I have to see I’m not exactly thrilled with this rumor. I can’t exactly figure out what it is that I don’t like about him, but there’s something. I mean, the physical things (eye color, hair color) can easily be changed. We’ve already seen that with Jen, Liam, and Josh. But, with Finnick it’s not just his eyes and hair. I feel like we all have a very detailed vision of Finnick and we know when we see someone that will work in the role. Of course, we can’t always be pleased and I’m sure the casting directors are doing all they can to not let us down. I just feel like most of us were rooting for Garrett because he had that specific look – I know I was.
I don’t know, guys. I think they rumors may be getting out of hand and the anticipation is just getting to us. I’m not gonna give up hope on the casting directors yet because they’ve been so spot on with the others who’ve been cast.
I have two theories on the situation: they’re either pushing back the release of the actors who have been chosen as Johanna and Finnick to increase anticipation OR they’re truly still looking for the perfect choice because they know how much these specific characters mean to us.

I have to add one more thing: I feel that, although he’s not the ideal choice for most of us, he’s one of the more decent ones. And, hey, if he can act then that’s great. I agree that acting comes before the look. But the look is still very important because Finnick’s story almost completely revolves around his looks.
But, anyway, I don’t LOVE this guy but I don’t hate him either. I guess we’ll see. If he is the choice, maybe he’ll look more like Finnick with seafoam-green contacts, bronze hair, and no facial hair.
With that said, I’m willing to give him a chance.

Holy cow, all you guys want are these Like seriously hot guys. Well you are not gunna get these little young looking guys who seriously are just NOT Finnick. While Finnick is supposed to be “Drop dead georgeous” Everyones opinion of that is SO VARIED.

Also, The Way this guys treated Serena, reminded me of Finnick and Annie.

If he is a great actor, and will do Finnick justice, then I’m all for him. =)I do admit, he is not how I pictured Finnick, but they can get the prep teams to make him into our perfect Finnick! =P I mean, look how Josh, Jennifer, and Liam all turned out? They look very much like how the were described in the books, and their acting is amazing. I’m just going to trust whoever they cast , because they have not let us down so far. Plus, this is just a rumor.

I’m a little underwhelmed by this. I imagined Finnick as some uber hot sex god. Don’t get me wrong, he IS attractive. But he’s not “Finnick” to me.

Ok, to me Sam is not drop-dead gorgeous but I DO think he’s a good-looking guy and, as someone else said, he was really good in White Heat. In that he portrayed a cocky player (sound like the public image of a certain HG character?) and his confidence made him very attractive. I pictured someone like Armie Hammer in the role but on the back of WH I have confidence that he can pull Finnick’s sexiness off.

Also, he was clearly not meant to be the star of Snow White but that doesn’t mean he can’t steal the show in CF. And for those that say he’s too old, he’s 26! Finnick is meant to be 24! Anyone younger just wouldn’t look right next to Jennifer and Liam (not Josh so much haha).

Personally I think Sam has just the right level of experience and fame for the role. He knows how to handle himself in a big film but he’s not so well-known that this part will be overshadowed by his previous work (as it would be with someone like Rob Pattinson or Zac Efron)…exactly the same position JL, JH and LH were in before THG! Good luck to him or whoever else is cast…

I think it’s a nice suggestion but I think we need someone younger like Garrett or the guy from TROn…don’t you agree? Plus I think they totally have the hair for it. But I won’t be devastated if it is him.
