Jena Malone Officially Cast as Johanna Mason in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’
Tributes, it looks like we have our Johanna Mason!! Lionsgate has just announced via CatchingFireCasting.com that Jena Malone will be playing the feisty District 7 Tribute Johanna Mason in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’!
About the Character:
Johanna Mason, a female victor from a past Games still in her early twenties, is one of the youngest, but also one of the most psychologically scarred Hunger Games participants.Jena Malone:
As a rising actress distinguished by her versatility and multidimensional roles, Jena Malone continues to evolve with each new project. Malone recently starred opposite Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton in the History Channel’s mini-series Hatfields & McCoys which is based on a true story, and chronicles the bloody hostilities between two clans that escalated to the point of near war between two states. Sony Pictures Television debuted the three part mini-series on May 28th, with the second and third parts airing on the History Channel May 29th and 30th, respectively. The mini-series broke cable records and become the new most-watched entertainment telecast of all time on cable.Malone will soon begin production on The Go Getters. The film is an LA noir thriller about a struggling actress (Malone) who gets caught up in a heist planned by two underworld brothers. Malone will next be seen in the independent feature In Our Nature opposite John Slattery and Zach Gilford about an estranged father and son who are forced to share a vacation home with their respective girlfriends after a scheduling mistake. The film premiered at SXSW as well as the Sarasota Film Festival and is scheduled to be released this fall.

UPDATE: Those of you that follow Jena on Instagram may be a little confused about her schedule with ‘The Go Getters’, but apparently this is the former title of ‘Ten Cent Pistol’, which Jena is filming now.

Not excited about this. Very disappointed actually. I don’t think she can do it. But hey, you never know. I was not particularly impressed with Liam Hemsworth, but he turned out to be great. Still, I don’t think she can do it, really.

I’m not familiar with Jena Malone’s acting but them again I didn’t know Jennifer or Liam.

Anyways she fits my image of Johanna, with the looks. Jena just needs to be….more….muscular. I think that’s the word. O_o I just can’t wait for the movie to come out!!!! Also can’t wait for the casting announcements!!!!!

@Randi Why not? She’s actually a really good actress if you’ve seen Hatfields and McCoys and any of her earlier works. Sucker Punch was god awful but everyone in it was horrible. There are pictures of her bulking up for SP and she gets very committed to her roles. She’s not an amateur actress. She has been acting professionally since she was a child and she displayed huge talent even then. Makeup will probably get her to cut her hair short and trainers will get her physicality up to where it needs to be. I think she’ll do perfectly fine.

I’ve never seen her in anything, so jugding by her looks, she isn’t exactly how i pictured Johanna, but she comes close enough. If she can act it (which it seems like she can, given what everyone is saying) then i think she could make a great Johnna!!!!!
never heard of her. Johanna is my favorite ‘person’ in the whole series. so if she doesnt do justice to this role, ill rip her throat out! (haha get it. my favorite Johanna quote hehe)

I think she looks the part. I can’t find the exact quotes, but it says Johanna has dark hair, so I don’t know what you all are talking about.
I really hoped that Zoe aggeliki would play the role but not for the way she acts but for the way she looks because she looks just like the Johanna I pictured. However, I do think that Jena Malone would act like a good Johanna Mason because I saw her act in Hatfields & McCoys (Jena Malone plays Nancy McCoy) and she does have the ability to act mean like Johanna…..

@Aelia – I always believed Johanna had dark hair as well, I haven’t read Mockingjay again recently but the only description of Johanna’s hair in Catching Fire is that it’s short and spiky, no colour reference at all.
I can’t remember off the top of my head whether a colour ever got mentioned in Mockingjay. For me though that’s a minor detail, I’m much more interested in her nailing all of the facets of Johanna, not whether she ends up being blonde, brunette, red hair etc

hey,hey,hey, no cussing! I have to admit I don’t know who she is and I haven’t seen the movies. Also, the only people I knew of before the Hunger Games came out that were in the movie were Isabelle Furman (clove, also the orphan) Stanley Tucci, (A lot of Places) Liam Hensworth (The last song) Josh Hutcherson (Journey 2) and Leven Rambin (wizards of waverly place) I didn’t even know Jennifer Lawrence even though she was nominated. But the good thing is I know who the cast is now.

But I agree that her *acting* not her looks is more important…I confess that J-Hutch still doesn’t fit my mental picture of Peeta, but in every interview I catch of him, I can see his Peeta-ness shining through.

Not how I imagined her look wise at first. But now I’m excited. I saw her in the Hatfields and McCoys. She was amaazing. Glad she got it.(:
