UPDATE: Liam Hemsworth Wins a Total Film 2012 Hotlist Award

You may remember a couple of months back that The Hunger Games was nominated in 5 categories at the Total Film Hotlist Awards 2012 (hot as in what’s heating up Hollywood as opposed to attractiveness!). Unfortunately our fav movie of the year was beaten in a number of categories by Joss Whedon’s Avengers, Hottest Book went to The Hobbit and Hottest Actress went to Kristen Stewart. But Gale himself, Liam Hemsworth, picked up the award for Hottest Newcomer (Male) and had this to say in the UK magazine:
“A huge thank you to all the people out there who voted for me. I feel very fortunate to receive this award. I’ll keep it under my pillow!”
All the winners are listed here and you can pick up a copy of Total Film on UK news stands to see the special editorial of the winners and their comments.
Update: Liam also spoke in a short interview with Total Film about Gale and Catching Fire:
Why do you think Gale made such an impression on audiences?
“Gale is a good person trying to find a way to stop bad people. And for the most part he has other people’s wellbeing before his own which I think makes him likeable.”
What scenes/moments are you looking forward to filming in Catching Fire? What can fans expect of Gale?
“I think just watching the different relationships become more complex will be great to see. I’m really looking forward to the part of the stories where Gale gets to fight back.”
You can read the rest of the interview at Total Film

Omg he looks alot more thin than he did in the first movie he looked like gale before but now I think he has more of the starved look down so excited for catching fire!
Haha congrats, he seems excited.
no one could have been better!
He looks…. happy….
OT (sorry) but are the forums completely fixed now?
@Anonymous – The forums are a bit touch and go, you seem to be able to post at the moment which is great
We are looking into migrating to some new software though.
While the comments are short, it does seem that Liam’s opinion of Gale as a “good person trying to find a way to stop bad people”, seems to a tad more positive a take on him, than the average fan’s perception of the character (especially after MJ!) This is assuming Liam’s read all three books, of course. But I guess maybe that’s one reason they casted him, that he really understood the reasons for Gale’s actions, that in his mind, he was fighting back. Even if that wound up taking him to very dark places. I also wonder, if Liam’s comment means that CF will show Gale start to fight back, and show his actions during the D12 bombing that saved so many people, or if he was talking more about the MJ movies?
“…and for the most part he has other people’s well being before his own.”
I like the way he said “for the most part.” Usually he puts others lives before himself but in MJ he’s willing to sacrifice others for what he sees as the greater good
Thanks for pointing that out, Ciara, showing us that while Liam may have an overall positive take on Gale, it’s not totally rose-colored, either. I also think that some of the Gale-hate I’ve seen from some in the fandom is a little too harsh. I don’t think SC meant for him to be a villian, just perhaps a shade darker than some other MCs. And I think that Gale, much like another famous character in children’s/YA lit, is also willing to sacrifice *himself* for the greater good, and in a way you could argue that he does wind up sacrificing a measure of personal happiness.
@Tash – thanks, that was me (no idea why I appeard as Anonymous…). Just wondering if there’s a way to let more people know that the forums sometimes work nowadays, because it’s a shame how little activity there is.
Really looking forward to seeing more of Gale in CF. I wonder if they’re going to put any Peeta/Gale interaction into the movie, I know there’s nearly none in the books but it’s possible that they’ll take some creative license here.
