Mockingjay.net Staff on Lynn Cohen’s Casting as Mags

Just a few days ago Lionsgate officially announced that Lynn Cohen would be playing Mags in ‘Catching Fire’, and it’s another decision the Mockingjay.net staff couldn’t be happier with! Read on for our reactions
Ciara
I’ve seen ‘Sex and the City’ but thankfully I remember very little of that movie (it only comes back in little parts sometimes during my nightmares *shudder*) but my friend informs me that she was good: “tough but soft.” I’ve actually seen her in quite a few things according to imdb like ‘Munich’ and ‘Syndoche, New York’ but I’m drawing a blank to her performance. Need to get Munich on the DVD player again! Going by looks, she’s just perfect… it’s times like this that I just want to hug Nina Jacobson for another completely perfect choice! Also after watching the video Crystal posted I fell in love with Lynn Cohen, so warm and lovely. Can’t wait to see her as Mags!

Having seen pretty much every single Law & Order and SVU episode, I actually do remember some of the characters Lynn Cohen has played. She seems like such a natural actor and has such an adorable smile. Although Mags isn’t a very big role, I’m still happy to see such great casting for it. Watching videos of her and recalling her past performances, I’m totally convinced she’ll take this little role and simply become Mags, making our Catching Fire experience more heartbreaking that it already will be.

Totally out of left field considering the other names that have been thrown out there, but I am in love with this choice. As Ciara said, Nina Jacobson and crew are knocking these castings out of the park so far
Lynn was terrific as Magda in ‘Sex and the City’, appearing in many episodes as Miranda’s housekeeper. I can see a bit of Mags in that character too, there was a tough layer there but also a real soft and generous side underneath. I think Lynn also really looks the part, she has a great smile and I can’t wait to see her babbling away.

now that crystal mentioned it, i can just imagine how big of a mess i’m going to be when mags’ time comes in the movie. i know a lot of people in fandom make a very big deal about cinna, or finnick, or prim, but for me it was mags. that was about the one time when i felt the urge to swing the book straight at my bedroom wall and just take a breather. and knowing an adorable lady such as lynn cohen is going to be playing mags, oh, i’m already tearing up and they haven’t even filmed it… :S
She’s going to own this role
hopefully her immediate death is as shocking of a moment as it was in the book and Finnick and Johanna’s reactions later on are just as heartbreaking.
@carla – I know exactly what you mean
When I read Catching Fire for the first time and Mags walked into the fog I was like “What, wait, did I read that right!?” and I actually had to go back and read that section about 2-3 times and try to process what had just happened. I think you’re right and it’s definitely going to be a teary moment
@Khanster – Judging on who has been cast so far I reckon you’ll get your ‘wish’, I have actually surprised myself with how much I am looking forward to seeing Johanna. I think Lynn is great, she will have that real fragile and sweet facade and then the awesome strength underneath.
I think it sounds like fantastic casting yet again! I’m so excited, I really hope she gets more scenes than Mags did in the books and her death is done both faithfully and creatively! So excited to see her take on Mags!
Am I the only one thinking that she’s too young? I imagined Mags as a very old lady with a hunched back.
@Maria She can put on makeup and hunch over. If they got someone THAT old to film in the heat here I’m pretty sure they’d end up with either a hospitalization for dehydration or a wrongful death suit on their hands. lol
@Tash I know what you mean, I’m really excited to see how Jena is going to bring Johanna to life.
