Target to Sell High End ‘The Hunger Games’ Merchandise
Have you been scouring the internet for a jacket similar to the one Katniss wears back in District 12? If you’ve got the money (I sure don’t…), Target has plans to release high end merchandise for ‘The Hunger Games’, including Katniss’ leather jacket for a cool $349.
To sell more DVDs and Blu-rays, retailers long have lured customers into their stores with exclusives. But for the homevideo launch of “The Hunger Games,” Target hopes to hit the bullseye by going high end.
It will sell a 14-carat gold reproduction of Katniss Everdeen’s Mockingjay pin for $999, a replica of her leather hunting jacket for $349 and a lithograph signed by pic’s cast, including Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, for $699.
All three will only be available on Target’s website, beginning midnight Aug. 18, with only 100 of the pins and lithographs, and 50 jackets available over three days.
In stores, the company will sell more traditional movie merchandise — from backpacks and lunchboxes to jewelry, pillow cases and life-size cardboard cut-outs of the film’s characters — with prices starting at a more manageable $7.
You may end up seeing TV spots for this high end merchandise as Target will be launching an advertising campaign for the items.

To me all of this, while very cool, it sounds very anti-hunger games. Whoever goes and buys this, certainly didn’t get what the book is about…

This is stupid. I’m sorry target but what exactly are you hoping to get out of this? It’s the hunger games! About poor people rising up against the rich! And target is a pretty middle class store. If I had $350 to blow, I don’t think I’d spend it at anything in Target even if I’m dying to have a jacket like Katniss. I’d go somewhere else and get a leather jacket like that! Heck, I’d hire a tailor to make one for me! I find this a bit dumb and backwards.
Meanwhile at hot topic there are mockingjay pins for 7 dollars……

It’s not ironic at all. They see an opportunity and they’re capitalizing on it. Who would seriously think big corporations like Target would take any kind of moral lesson from THG?
It’s called high-end merchandise because the people who decided to do this must have been high at the time. Somebody needs to forward this to the Wharton School so they can include it in their textbook’s section of Dumbest Business Decisions Ever Made.
Seriously, I can’t believe they would be so stupid to be that ignorant about their target market, most of which (for a YA novel) is, oh yeah, young girls. And how many young girls can afford a $300 jacket or $1000 pin? So ridiculous. They’re going to spend a fortune producing this stuff but just succeed in putting a bad taste in the mouths of fans who can’t buy any of it.
The idea was great, the execution very poor. All they had to do is scale everything down to an affordable range: make $30 faux leather replica jackets, $20 sterling silver pins, that kind of thing. They would sell tons of those. The lithographs, maybe just a few limited edition which the well-to-do can buy (Disney does this all the time with their movies and they do sell a few of them at least, so it’s worth a shot).
I doubt they’re targeting the typical YA reader. I’m sure they’re well aware that the THG trilogy has a substantial following of older fans, which is where the money is.
Yikes. That’s steep for a jacket. I bought a copy cat from Garage for $19.95 for the midnight premiere…I’m good with that, thanks. Katniss must be worth a lot if her jacket and boots cost about $800 combined! Not quite the poverty stricken D12 girl eh? Whatever. It’s just another ploy to make money off the franchise. I don’t think it will sell too well, TBH.
On the same note, remember when marketing for Twilight released replicas of Bella’s jackets and dresses for under $100 (save the wedding dress)? That was a pretty smart move.
I don’t care about the leather jacket. Just get me one of those nifty Tribute jackets and I’ll be satisfied. =D

Let’s call Target “The Capitol,” and let’s call Hot Topic “District 12.” Mockingjay pins can be found at Hot Topic for near 10 bucks. It’s not 14-carat gold, but I don’t think too many people care.
