Mockingjay 1 and 2 to Be Filmed Back to Back

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the films Mockingjay 1 and 2 will be filmed back to back, which will cut down on costs enough to boost the profitability of both films up from what they anticipate to be a lower gross for ‘Catching Fire’ due to higher production costs.

Although no director has been selected for the two planned films to be adapted from “Mockingjay,” the third book in the “Hunger Games” trilogy, Wachsberger said that the two movies, to be released in November 2014 and 2015, will be shot together.

Because of that, Wachsberger said, “we expect the average budget [for the 'Mockingjay' movies] to be slightly lower than ‘Catching Fire.’” And with lower costs, he added, “profitability should come up with the final two installments.”

Well it would suck if they WEREN’T going to film them back-to-back, that’d create a lack of continuity. xD But I’m glad they think so and that they’ve confirmed it~

I always assumed this. I don’t thik it would make sense to film them seperately, considering how busy the cast is. Shooting it back to back, just gets it out of the way. It would give them extra time for post-production on MJ2 as well.

well, i believe they’re in for a (pleasant) surprise with catching fire, but i always assumed they’d film MJ this way. if it means the same director for both films, the same screenwriter for both films, and the sense of continuity that is not only expected but NEEDED, then i’m all up for it.

@carla – even if Catching Fire grossed the same as The Hunger Games, it’d still be lower profit, cause it supposedly has an undisclosed much higher budget, so there’s that.

When they say the Mockingjay budget will be lower than Catching Fire, I’m hoping Catching Fire’s budget is much higher than The Hunger Games because of the arena and everything, so I hope Mockingjay has an appropiate budget for a 4/5 hour film split in two. I don’t want things needing cutdowns because of budget.

And the back-to-back thing was basically expected because of continuity and stuff. So no big news here, but great that they’re doing it.

I’ve been curious as to when they will be filming MJ. Fall 2013 will involve promotion for CF, so is it likely that they will film before, during and/or after CF premieres? I’d assume that with twice the material, this would be a quite an extended shoot.

Good, but why release them a year apart? I understand post-production on Part 2 would make that take longer to be ready, but a year?

I think they mean lower per-film budget, rather than lower budget overall.

This doesn’t surprise me! I DO think part of it has to do with the cast getting older. In MockingJay they are all about 17, right? They aren’t going to look 17 forever (infact Jen/Liam don’t look 17 to begin with.) If they filmed them too far apart they’d look different.

I have been wondering how they will film mockingjay with such a tight schedule. It just seems like they are rushing things in to it real quickly, and if it will have a lower budget than catching fire is also a little concerning. But I do think it is best for them to shoot back to back. So I do have hope that the movie will be awesome and wont worry to much and will just have to wait and see.

@abel– yes, i know that’s what they meant. i just think catching fire will make a lot more than THG did, and even with the higher budget they’ll have about the same (or even larger) profit. they always seem to keep their expectations low, which i think isn’t a bad idea– the same thing happened with THG: when they started filming they were just hoping it would make more than $100M, and it’s grossed six times that. i think something like that will happen with CF, because after THG, the word is out for international markets. that’s why i said i think they’re in for a pleasant surprise.

now that you guys mention it, i AM kind of worried about the shooting schedule. but when i think about it, it shouldn’t be too hard either– so long as they keep an airtight hold on the actors’ schedules. no time to go off and film other movies, they’ll have to stay dedicated entirely to this franchise for the better part of the year.

I wonder how they are going to film the epilogue because they are 20 years older in that.

@ OdairShe.is – makeup? Digitally modifying their onscreen appearance? I don’t think they’ll have too much of a problem with it. Or they might set the epilogue only 10 years after the end.

  12.

We have to wait 20 years to get Mockingjay part 2. They want to do the epilogue right. J/K :P

  13.

@Abel Toy my God, that would be awful :)

@Odair, they’ll use the usual trick: change the hairstyles. It’s how they show characters during different times and what they did at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 when they gave Bonnie that awful Betty Rubble hairdo because they thought it made Ginny look older. But it just made her look like a dowdy housefrau. XD

Seriously though, I would rather they did nothing and have the characters look just as they were; maybe have them change clothes. 20 years isn’t that long a time and not everyone looks significantly different at 40 than they do from 20 or 30. They may have a few more fine lines and be a bit out of shape but they’re not going to suddenly have wrinkles or crows feet on their face or whatever.

I like how they are filming it back to back because then the characters don’t look older and all, (as some of you said), but the lower budget thing is pretty concerning to me. I hope they don’t cost the film any cheap special affects or props and such.

Also, its actually pretty heartbreaking:( They will be done filming earier so THG cast won’t really see much of each other until a year later for Mall tours and interviews:( And then, after that, its all over. Nothing more to look forward to:( BUT ITS OKAY thats like a far ways away and I’m sure they will keep in touch like Jen and Josh and yeah. Yay for filming back-to-back

  16.

@reese– gah, let’s not even think about that yet, please. i’m still crying over harry potter. :(

I hope Lionsgate’s already looking for a screenwriter, a year is a short time to write two movies.

  18.

@OdairShe.is – I figured they’d get older actors for the scenes in the far future – look like older versions of the original actors, maybe dub in the original actors’ voices.

Haha they want to do the last page of chapter 27 and the epilogue !!! :)

By a lower budget they mean they might spend 175 to 200 million to make both mj 1 and 2, making it a lower average cost to film the movie because they are filming at the same time

Makes sense to do both together. The insurance and permits need only bought once. Set and clothing storage having to have if spaced apart.

O.k so no problem if they want to split the last book in two parts just as long as they respect the ending and Peeta and Katniss end up together.
