Mockingjay Movie Night #3: Sucker Punch

I admit it. I jinxed it. When I posted about Mockingjay Movie Night #2, I mentioned we’d have to wait until August to watch a ‘Finnick’ movie. It’s now August 10th and it’s starting to look like we won’t get a Finnick until the end of this month in a final blazing burst of casting news.

Meanwhile, the show must go on! For this month’s viewing, we’ve chosen a movie starring Jena Malone, who will be playing the feisty Johanna Mason in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’. We’ll host the chatroom on August 25, 2012 at 7 PM Eastern. This means you have just over two weeks to secure a copy to watch along with the staff of Mockingjay.net. Here’s a brief summary of the movie:

Locked away against her will, Babydoll (Emily Browning) has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four fellow captives – outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish) – to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorki (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm).

Sucker Punch is rated PG-13 and is available for sale from Amazon for ~$10, Target for ~$13, or at Walmart for the hands-down best price of $3 (with free store pickup). If you REALLY want to get into it for movie night, you can dress up as Jena’s character Rocket!

    Can’t wait :’D Babydoll<3

Just wondering, why did you do this movie instead of Donnie Darko? Is it because she’s not in that movie long enough?

    •

It’s because her role as Rocket bears quite a few similarities to Johanna Mason.

  3.

@Khanster – That and this is probably a little more accessible to a wider reader base, Donnie Darko is, well, a little dark lol (still a brilliant film though)

Can’t wait, it was actually on sale in a Buy 2 Get 1 free blu-ray promotion at JB Hi Fi so I picked it up today :)

I don’t really like this movie. I like the way that they’re trying to be free from all these horrible men. But it feels so wrong that they’re all wearing these “sexy” outfits in the “fantasy” land (where they have different clothes than in reality). It has a good chance to feel like a girl power movie, but then it instead feels like they are trying to be sexy – wich is totally wrong in the situation where they is being abused by men…

Yeah Nellie, all great points and for me in the end it just didn’t wrap up and was about 10% away from being a great film. But that missing piece made the whole thing flop for me. GREAT soundtrack though!

  5.

@crystal– oh gosh, that soundtrack is absolutely perfect. when i came home from the theater that day, downloading the soundtrack was the first thing i did.

  6.

Argh. I already saw it just for Jena Malone… and apart from her I didn’t really like it. Will probably join you people on IRC, but won’t watch this particular movie (is there still time to change it, though?)

ive seen it but wont mind to watch it with u guys tho I didnt like it that much :P

  8.

Why didn’t you guys just wait until the eighteenth and have The Hunger Games for a movie night? That makes more sense, don’t you think? Plus I’ve already seen Sucker Punch, and honestly I didn’t like it! :)

    •

Because Tash, Ciara, and Sarah don’t get it until September and it didn’t seem fair to them. :(

@Crystal why don’t they get it until september?

  10.

Heheh, just a *slight* correction, I get it before you guys Crystal ;) Only by a day though lol But yes, we are saving a THG viewing party for when everyone has access to the dvd. I have no idea why the UK has to wait until September 3 for it.

Even if you’ve already seen it, please come along! Those who have been before can vouch that the chats are hilarious and a tonne of fun, even if you don’t have the movie on. I haven’t seen it yet (I hadn’t seen Constantine or I am Legend either) so I’m sure my commentary will be stupidly funny lol :D

Ok so I have younger siblings and if me and my cousin decide to watch this they probably will want to watch it to. How old do you think is old enough to watch this movie, because some pg-13 movies aren’t really that bad but then there are some you have to look out for!

Hi Katie, Sucker Punch does have a lot of glorified violence and it also has implied sexual abuse. It also, obviously, has all the girls wearing ridiculously sexy outfits for no real purpose of looking good.

  12.

Crystal: Yeah the ending was a bit confusing. But I love the soundtrack too. :)

  13.

So, we are going to do The Hunger Games in September? Did you guys know they are doing Midnight release parties? Link: http://hungergamesreleaseparty.com/
    lol…party at Walmart :)

Katie, Sucker Punch is one of the very mature type of PG-13 films. Significant sexual content and of course, violence, not to mention some very adult themes.

It’s a decent film, though. Not good, but decent. I cannot wait until all the fanmade trailers start coming with clips of Jena as Rocket…

Aw, Sucker Punch isn’t that bad of a film, if you fully understand the story :]
It can be a bit emotional too. Or maybe that’s just me being so attached to Babydoll… lol

Gotta admit though, Babydoll’s outfit while she’s fighting is so pretty :’] I want her Katana.

BTW, if I’m sounding annoying then I’m sorry. I don’t mean to. It’s just that I’m very passionate about this film :] I try to get as many people as I can to watch it, so I can explain it to them because it’s so confusing.

    :]

Good details, a lot of thanks towards author. It truly is incomprehensible to me now, but in common, the usefulness and significance is overwhelming. Thanks again and excellent luck!
