‘Hunger Games’ Passes ‘Harry Potter’ as Amazon’s Top Seller

As crazy as it sounds, Amazon has announced that ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy has surpasses the entire ‘Harry Potter’ series as their new Top Seller!
Katniss Everdeen has triumphed over the boy wizard, Amazon announced on Friday, as the company’s sales of the “Hunger Games” trilogy have overtaken those of the Harry Potter series.
Sara Nelson, the editorial director of books and Kindle at Amazon, said in a statement that since the debut of “The Hunger Games” in 2008, the series has “taken the world by storm, much as Harry Potter did a decade before.”
“Interestingly, this series is only three books versus Harry Potter’s seven, and to achieve this result in just four years is a great testament to both the popularity of the work and, we think, the growth in reading digitally during that time,” she said.
The sales include print and e-book formats, making the “Hunger Games” trilogy Amazon’s best-selling series.
I’m sure this has largely to do with the sale of e-books, where ‘The Hunger Games’ have been dominating for quite some time, while ‘Harry Potter’ has only been available electronically for a short time.
Either way, hurray for Suzanne Collins and hurray for The Hunger Games!

I read this same article on mugglenet and surprised to see a lot of the commenters are bashing on the hunger games. I also love Harry Potter and of course The Hunger Games. But over there it seems many people hate on The Hunger Games. I thought many HP fans liked the Hunger games but whatever.
I’m thrilled to hear this! But let’s not forget that when Harry Potter first came out in 1997, Amazon wasn’t that big. I’m sure that HP sold many copies outside of Amazon.
This is still an AMAZING accomplishment for THG.I’m thrilled to hear this! But let’s not forget that when Harry Potter first came out in 1997, Amazon wasn’t that big. I’m sure that HP sold many copies outside of Amazon.

I love both series immensely, so I’m not trying to bash either with this comment. But I do want to point out something in this article. You say, “I’m sure this has largely to do with the sale of e-books” with HG dominating there and with HP only available as eBooks recently. But I wanted to point out that, while you’re probably correct that eBooks are a big reason why Hunger Games took the top spot, you can’t buy the Harry Potter eBooks on Amazon. The only way to buy them is from Pottermore, so Potter is already at a disadvantage that is out of its control. So it’s no wonder that Hunger Games took the top spot with both physical and eBooks over Potter with just physical books.
nooooooooooooooo! im sorry but hp is better than the hunger games!
harry poters good?!?!
O.O ?!?!
*sigh* I guess the era has moved on. Oh well. As much as I love THG….I’m forever a Potterhead.
And Knightlock, you’re only going to find Harry Potter fans on Mugglenet because its a HARRY POTTER site. Just like you’ll find Hunger Games fans on here. And not all HP fans like the HG. Some do, like me. But there’s a reason they’re on that site.
Hunger Games Fans are to nice
we are saying “harry potter books are good.” While Harry Potter Fans are saying “These are horrible books and shouldn’t deserve to even exist.”
Why do Potterheads have to be so mean??
I am also a proud Potterhead, but Hunger Games is my number one favorite book.
@radiantasthesun oh ya haha I know I mean we dont have to argue which one is better, Im say that its better to enjoy both if you like them equally and not compare them.
i think harry potter is just stupid !!!
Hell yeah baby! That’s what I’m talking about! For me THG will forever trump HP and Twilight because it is more realistic and relative. I can’t take fantastical stories too seriously, their great escapes but that’s about it. Again my opinion. #thehungergamestrilogy #thatisall
Yea…Harry Potter was never my thing. I missed the age window for me to become truly immersed in it and by the time I read it, it just didn’t impress me. I prefer the THG by far. I may give HP another chance in the distant future though, especially since I would appreciate its Britishness a lot more now. (Though I still think Muggle is one of the silliest, strangely offensive words I’ve seen.)
In any case, it’s nice that THG has sold this much. I doubt it would get actual theme parks though like Harry did though. Heh.
I love The Hunger Games. But I spent ten years of my life as a devout Potterhead, and the rest of my life I shall remain loyal to the series. Sorry, THG is amazing in it’s own right, but Harry Potter wins 10 ways to Sunday in my book. But that’s just me. I’m not bashing anything.
Congrats to HG…however this is not really a fair comparison…most HP books came out in the 90′s we didn’t have e books then or online reading. The HP books are very old fashioned and most HP fans are all grown up and married and are less internet crazy. HP fans go to book stores to buys books. HG fans are still in their teens.
However I don’t think HP fans should feel all that bad, the 7 harry potter books has sold 450 million copies and counting HG books sales including the novel is estimated are 30 million copies.

In reality that is not half the sale of a single harry potter book. The last HP boos deathly hallows has sold more than 50 million copies as for July 2011 which is more than the 3 hunger games books combined.
Agree with most of the comments.
HG is an new, quick, average book, that will be forgotten as soon as movies are over. It’s also new and on-going.
HP is old, good book, that still lives and is an best seller after release in 1997 and end of the movies. Everyone brought Hard back of it, not ebook.
HP is an classy, legend. Hunger Games is an teen chick lit.
@Nat, I’m sorry but you clearly did not get HG if all you’re calling it is a teen chick lit. Like what? Seriously? Just all wrong.
I love both books! And since they didn’t come out together, it’s a little unfair to compare them, like when I was younger, I was crazy abut HP and couldn’t wait for the next book of the series to come out. But after the series ended, I was looking for another series to emerse myself in and when THG came out, I was crazy about it too, especially since the movies are also still ongoing. Though I gotta say, movie-wise, THG is the better adaptation.
to Anna…
Am not so sure about the adaptations…I guess that will be one we can rightfully ague..However if you go by the critical reception, 4 of the 7 HP films are more critically accliamed than the first hunger games films and this is on rotten tomatoes. If you go on Metacritic which is a tougher critic site majority of the HP film are more critically acclaimed than the hunger games film.
I think the hunger games movie benefited from the failure of the twilight films. Many of the movie critics had to mention how awful the twilight film was in their hunger games movie reviews.
The real test for the hunger games movies will be when the part 1 and part 2 movies of mockingjay comes out.
we all know that there is no real or legitimate reason to split mockingjay in 2 parts for the reason that the book is small and unlike deathly hallows the book didn’t received a lot positive reviews like the first 2 books.
Deathly hallows part 2 alone is a 96% fresh and RT and an 87/100 on metacritic
The mockingjay movies will be very had to top that if it is very faithful to the book.
While I do like the hunger games books, this makes me unhappy. Because while they’re good books that do send a message, they are in no way comparable to the brilliance of HP. Not just in terms of writing style, but in content too. It would be hard reading HG for Christian/Alchemist/Hero with a Thousand Faces symbolism, because it’s a lot simpler of a book.
Simple is not a bad thing. But it doesn’t mean it should be outshining Harry Potter
I love both, but HP (slightly) my favorite. I think HG overtaking HP has, as others have mentioned, more to do with the fact that HP is older. I bought all seven of my HP books at old-school brick and mortar bookstores. The first four were because Amazon still wasn’t that big, and the last three were because I wanted to do the midnight party thing. I bought all three of my HG books from Amazon because times had changed. I don’t go to brick and mortar bookstores anymore, and since the series is shorter I missed the midnight parties thing (I didn’t get into reading HP until the first four were already out, but there were still three to go. HG was already “over” by the time I got into it.)
Harry Potter is the most sold book series in HISTORY! It has sold 500 million copies, the Hunger Games is still below 50 million. Also amazon is digital. Most Harry Potter books sold are print, while Hunger Games are digital. Big surprise Hingrr Games can pass Harry Potter on amazon, NOT!
i like harry potter WAY BETTER than hunger games
well hunger games might be more realistic but i like Harry Potter better
HG 4eva never knew potter heads r Sooo mean!:(
About ten years back I noticed an electrical muscle stimulation
contraption for sale in a Self-Care catalog.
