Sam Claflin Tweets Reaction to Finnick Casting Announcement

This morning, Sam Claflin tweeted his excitement about taking on the role of Finnick Odair in ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ and thanked several fansites for the support. Back in London after a vacation in Cuba, it’s unclear at the moment how soon he’ll be needed in Atlanta for filming. It’s likely that they’ll be filming Jennifer Lawrence (who recently departed for Georgia just a couple of days ago) and Josh Hutcherson during the Victory Tour first, leaving Sam with some time to begin training at home before reporting to set. Be sure to follow @SamClaflin on Twitter!

Sweet! I’ve been checking his Twitter all day to see his reax. Good for him.
he’s so sweet! AWWW. :3
random: does the fact that he’s apparently back to london mean that other project he was supposed to be filming in “late summer” has been kicked to the curb? *curious*
Seems like such a nice guy. And lol he’s so “trilled” to be part of it he’s misspelling xD well anyone would be.
Liam Hemsworth is finishing up filming on Paranoia next Monday so he can travel to Georgia to film Catching Fire so they might not be filming the victory tour first.
I honestly don’t think they’ll need Sam until around early October or later as there’s a ton of scenes with Josh and Jen without him. Even the Capitol stuff, he’s probably only 3 or 4 scenes. How lucky that the most filming he’ll do will be in Hawaii.
I can see Liam finishing up in just a few weeks.
UNLESS of course, they are showing Gale’s role in the end in which case he’d be needed much longer, but I am kind of really hoping they DON’T do it because I want the CF book ending to be a massive movie twist.
He seems like such a sweetheart. I love how excited he is and uses the hashtag ‘dreaming.’ Can’t wait to see him onscreen!
@Crystal – how would you end it? Showing the devastation in 12? Revealing Peeta’s capture? Both/neither?
@SPM I’m not sure. It’s more that I don’t want them to show Gale doing the evacuation. I want that part to remain in Katniss’ perspective and she only finds out when she wakes up to find a dirty, injured Gale and then he tells her. I mean, it’d be really nice if Gale closed out the movie exactly how they closed out the book, but I think that might be too drastic for a movie. You know what would be totally sweet though… They end with Haymitch vowing they’ll get Peeta back no matter what it takes and then they have an after the credits appearance with Coin kind of like how they did it with Nick Fury in Iron Man 1. THAT WOULD ROCK MY WORLD!
Hope Sam is needed for a lot of scenes… could do with Finnick popping up occasionally during the whole movie
Aw he’s so cute saying #TeamFinnick. I believe he’ll play Finnick brilliantly.
@bailey – LOL, I wouldn’t mind that either. And I agree, I think he’s going to be great.
Sam’s such a sweetheart!
Aww bless him. I just can’t wait to get ANY news from the set. I can’t believe we have to wait over a year for the film, i’m in agony here!
Great idea – that Coin thing would be so money. (
Ahem. Pardon the pun.)
And that last line from Gale could work, provided they do it as a voiceover while showing the smoldering ruins of D12. Or so goes the picture in my head.
Ack, stupid spacing.
In general, movies aren’t filmed in chronological order. They’d probably film the few Finnick scenes together, but no idea when in the process.
an evacuation scene would be a great way to fill in a canon gap which necessarily comes about from strict 1st person Katniss POV. Maybe it would be great for a post-credits scene.
Is it weird that I now have myself a collection of like 100 pictures of Sam claflin on my phone?? Lol every day I like him more!
I just can’t wait to see him with bronze hair and green eyes! At least the hair, I hate to say this, but if his eyes stay blue I’d get mad but eventually get over it. Break a leg Sam!
Awww I love him! He grew on me when the rumors came out. So when the announcement was made I was happy that it had been him. AWWWWW FINNICK!
I love this guy so much ever since the rumors started back in june <3 one of his biggest fans here!
I am very happy for him, and I think that is really nice of him to address the fans like that. Good show Sam!
@Crystal – I love your idea, I mean really love it. Having it end like that with Haymitch vowing that to Katniss will certainly tie into MJ1 nicely. The idea of Coin making an appearance after the credits would be cool too.
@Crystal I do like that idea with coin. I also thought it would be cool to see District 12 being bombed or the aftermath of the bombing, and showing the remains of District 12. Even though that is in Mockingjay but would be a nice transition. I also thought it could be cool if they even changed the ending entirely and it should Katniss being dropped off in District 12 and seeing the ruble of her old house and see Snows rose lying on the floor and just end it there.
re: the ending of the CF movie–
personally, i hope we get to see the bombing of D12, but i think it’d be interesting if they didn’t show us gale & co getting out, and instead left it hanging. i think that could be an almost bigger cliffhanger than “katniss, there is no district twelve,” especially considering katniss has just found out peeta was captured. and leaving us (well, the people who haven’t read the books) thinking she might’ve lost her family and gale on top of that, it would be like twisting the knife in a sense. ehhh, i’m thinking like a writer instead of as a fan here; i tend to be a fan of evil cliffhangers. xD
i’m also, like many of you, really hoping we can get a glimpse of coin at the end of CF, but i’d rather it be the very last scene before the credits instead– after-credits scenes are just very “marvel” to me and i think that can be a little cheesy. if the scene happened directly before the credits, though, it could parallel the last scene of the first movie (with donald sutherland evilly watching K&P at D12) really well, and give the audience a hint for the mockingjay movies.
@carla LOL! The very first after-the-credits bit I can remember is way back in the 1980s at the end of the Masters of the Universe movie, when Skeletor pops up out of the water and says, “I’LL BE BACK!!”
@carla ya I agree on having Coin show up before the credits. I imagined it would be like this:
Gale says “Katniss there is no District 12″
Then it would show like a POV of Katniss view from her lying on the bed and be blurry and show Coin walking toward her and introduce District 13 and then get a clear shot of her face, when Katniss comes to her senses of whats going on. Then go on from there.
@crystal– funnily enough, i was just re-watching that movie a few days ago, actually! it was on syfy. i was momentarily reminded that dolph lundgren was in the expendables 2 and i was all “whoa… that’s an awkward connection with THG right there.”
and yeah, i know marvel was not the first to come up with the post-credits scene, not by far, but my brain associates the two because it seems like all their movies do it nowadays (except the bryan singer/matthew vaughn movies but that’s because BS/MV are classy fellas that way.
). i just don’t want them to use it on CF and have it come across as a gimmick. i don’t think it goes with the tone the film should have.
@knightlock– yeah, i was thinking of something along those lines. or, rather than her interacting with katniss, it could be someone else (plutarch?) coming to talk with coin about katniss’s state or something like that.
re: ending of CF movie
In my head, I thought that after the credits they can show a scene where Peeta is still stuck in the arena. He wakes up looking for Katniss and he sees her. As he reaches out for her, she turns into the mutt Katniss then a struggle ensues. The camera pans to the side and we see Snow (like Ceasar in the first movie) smirking.
re: D12 and Gale
I actually don’t want to see D12 bombed directly and Gale doing the evacuation. They can cut to it in pieces but I don’t want the whole thing. I think its more tragic when Gale says there is no more D12. Then at the start of Mockingjay, they can have Katniss look at the smoldering remains of D12.
Back to Sam!
I stalked his Twitter when he was still rumored to be Finnick and he seems like such a nice guy. Had lots of laughs reading this tweets from the Olympics.
I think that in the tracker jacker scene when katniss is having a hallucination and she sees her house getting blown up was a sense of foreshadowing. So I personally wouldn’t want to see any of D12 at the end of catching
fire. I think it would be cool for the opening scene of mockingjay to be the hallucination she had minus the mine blowing up and then it could pan out to katniss walking through D12 and like the pieces of the houses are floating in the air like they did during the hallucination.
@D.odair – yeah, in general, when the rest of a story is already written, there’s lots of opportunities for foreshadowing. The District 11 riot would be another example of that in the THG movie.
@ D.odair – Oh, right! Just Gale telling that and… ta-daaaa end! Major killer cliffhanger.
Hmm.. after Katniss do that, something happen in District 12. I want it to feel is real, like heart-wrecking scene.
He gets more likeable by the day. You go Sam!
Meanwhile, I love the discussions you all are having about the ending of CF. I haaven’t thought about it enough to come up with a creative idea, but I love all your theories.
I don’t think they’ll show the D12 bombing in Catching Fire, but I was thinking it would be cool if it was the opening scene of Mockingjay part 1. They show the bombing and the evacuation, and then cut instantly to Katniss standing in the ruins.
I would LOVE to see coin at the end of the credits kinda like what The Amazing Spider-man and the Avengers did. I dont know how they are going to end it but I dont want it to be a cliff hanger! I liked how they did it in The Hunger Games.
@Khanster I agree with you on opening it with the bombing evacuation, then go to Katniss standing in the ruins.
