Fansites Weigh in on the “Catching Fire Mystery Woman”

A few days ago, Crystal posted an editorial about her theory on who the Mystery Woman on the “Catching Fire” casting page is. This proved to be a very popular topic with the casting-starved fandom, and today Movies.com asked the big Hunger Games fansites to weigh in with their thoughts.
See Crystal’s abbreviated theory, as well as what the other fansite admins have to say, after the break.

From what I’ve seen online, everyone seems to think the Mystery Woman is either Annie Cresta, Madge Undersee, or Alma Coin. And these are all great guesses, as I think each of these characters would elicit an excited response from fans. Imagine how cool it would be for Catching Fire to end with a quick glimpse of Coin looking all authoritative in her District 13 bunker! I’d also love to see Madge re-incorporated into the pin storyline (and I do think it’s possible). All that being said, however, my money’s on Annie. Annie is a pretty important figure in Mockingjay, so it would make sense for them to go ahead and introduce her in Catching Fire, even though we only get a brief glimpse of her in the book.Crystal of Mockingjay.net
I’m very much convinced at this point that the Mystery Woman will mark the return of Madge Undersee. She’s the only person that I think Lionsgate has sufficient reason to hide like that. Anyone else would simply be a reveal and are too small as-is to be on the casting page. Mrs. Everdeen is a named part, presumably in all four movies, but she’s not even on the page. To me this leaves out people like Hazelle Hawthorne, Greasy Sae, Bonnie, Twill, Maysilee Donner, Alma Coin, and even Annie Cresta. Because people made such a huge deal out of Madge being cut from the first movie, I think hiding her name is the perfect way to lead up to a crazy unveiling of her appearance in Catching Fire. I’ll certainly be disappointed if it’s anyone but her. (Read more of Crystal’s thoughts on the mystery woman casting right here.)Jacqui of My Hunger Games
I’d like to think that the mystery person is Alma Coin. While we don’t meet her until Mockingjay, it would make for an interesting cliffhanger to see the woman that is essentially the lynch pin to the future of Panem make an appearance. The film could end with Coin playing a crucial role in the rescue of Katniss from the Arena. As those that have read Mockingjay know, Coin presents an ever-present danger to Katniss. She is more than willing to let Katniss die once she’s fulfilled her duties as the mockingjay. An actress that could capture the very ruthlessness and duplicity of Coin would be someone like Sigourney Weaver. She manages to play women with great presence and tenacity.
Who do you think this “Mystery Woman” is?
Personally, I was a big President Coin supporter until Crystal swayed me. Now I’m 92% sure it’s Madge, 5% sure it’s Coin, 2% sure it’s Annie, and 1% sure it’s someone we’ll all shake our heads at and be “like, really?”

i’m still hoping it’s coin, wishing it could be madge, yet almost convinced it’ll be annie. but whoever it is i almost wish they WOULDN’T tell us and could instead leave it a surprise to shock us when we actually watch the movie. that would be amazing.
@carla Half of me says YES to that idea, the other is like PLEASE NOOOO! lol
I really wish it could be Annie even though Annie has few parts in Catching Frie she is a huge character in Mockingjay. Im 70 percent sure its her 20 percent sure its mad, which I would absolutely love if they brought in to the movie. Im 10 percent sures it Coin. Cant wait to figure out who
@carla – I reckon you’ve got a fair chance of getting your wish there, especially if it does turn out to be Coin, wouldn’t want that revealed before the movie!
twill? they mentioned bonnie being cut out but not twill.
I think that Sigourney Weaver would be an awesome Coin! I haven’t really heard many fancasting for Annie or Madge (if they are in it). Maybe I’m just out of it , but my choices for Annie would be Anne Hatheway or the girl who plays Annie in the Finnick and Annie series. I have no idea who should play Madge.
I think it will be either Maysilee, Annie, or Coin. Personally, I want Angelica Housten for Coin, Natalie Portman for Annie, and Evanna Lynch for Maysilee.
I think it is Annie, but I want it to be President Coin. (I’d still like to see Annie, though!)
I would love to see coin at the end of the movie!!!!!
I don’t know…I think the story can continue slightly changed without Madge, so Annie or Coin for me. I like the idea of introducing Coin at the end as suggested…sooooo excited!
While I know everyone likes Annie, I don’t think she has enough of a presence in CF to warrant a box. She’s hysterical at the reaping and they use her voice against Finnick during the Quell. That’s it unless they expand her role for the film. I personally think that Bonnie and Twill deserve at least as much recognition as the District 8 tributes given they actually have something to say. This leads me to think that Bonnie/Twill are out. I’m leaning towards one actress who will portray both Madge and Maysilee except for the fact that they don’t also seem to casting a young Haymitch (unless I’veissed something). So Madge or Coin – I’m 50/50 – I’d rather see a silhouette and a voice giving a command than the actor. There would have to be a lot more info given for it to register with the casual movie audience.
I really don’t think they’re going to add Madge back in this late in the game. The screenwriters probably thought of way to have catching fire without her when they made the decision to cut her character from the first movie. My money’s on either Coin, Annie, or a totally new character.
Maybe it could be Buttercup!? :0 Seriously, though, I believe its either Coin or Annie, like most people. Though I would be excited if it was Maysilee, and they were doing a few flash back scenes.
@crystal– haha, i know, right? like, i say that now, but if lionsgate actually doesn’t tell us who she is i’m sure i’ll be the first one to go: “TROLLSGATEEEEEEE.”
@tash– yep, exactly. if it’s annie or madge i wouldn’t mind too much if they do reveal her, but if it’s coin then i would definitely prefer not to know beforehand. coin’s appearance, if it happens, HAS to be the big surprise at the end.

When thinking liberally, it can be any one of those characters or more. Some are much, much more likely than others (PERSONALLY, I think it’s Annie, Madge/Delly or Coin), but there is still room for possibility. Remember that a movie adaption isn’t obligated to remain 100% consistent with the source material. All of those names I listed above either had a small role to play in the novels or were mentioned in passing. Lionsgate may choose to cut them out altogether, exaggerate practically non-existent roles (i.e. Katniss’ neighbour, Leevy) or even throw a whole new cameo character into the mix. While that last suggestion may seem a little controversial, I really don’t think it would be all that significant if the film makers were still consistent in conveying the essence of the story. Really, it could be anyone. The fact that they’ve chosen to keep the character’s name hidden is indicative of either:
a) an attempt to keep fans satiated with speculation until another formal casting announcement is forthcoming;
or
b) They have a plan to put an alternate spin on either a new ‘combined’ character (as Marya suggested with Madge and Delly in Crystal’s article) or a more detailed plot for a minor book character to keep things fresh. Both of those would be creative decisions with the potential to elicit controversy for any stickler novel fans.
So for all we know, the filmmakers could give Peeta a sister rather than just two brothers and she could be the one who he meets in District 13. After all, if someone skim-read ‘The Hunger Games’ trilogy, they might not even remember those miniscule details about Peeta’s male siblings (since their role is all but non-existent).
Lionsgate has purchased all creative rights to the franchise, so they have the ability to make any and all alterations to the story they see fit. Personally, I’m not adverse to such modifications of the script. I think it could be interesting to see any new perspectives on the original idea and if it keeps with the essence of the trilogy, I’m all for it
I don’t understand why they would want to hide Annie. I mean, I don’t think she would add to any mystery following the Mockingjay movies. I am more than willing to bet it’s Alma Coin. It would be a complete money grabber for the next movie to show that there could be potential danger or secret lurking around (to non-readers of course). I think it would also be the most predictable move as far as movies go.
Personally I think there is too much unknown to know why there has been the mystery as to who it is but in my opinion that means it can’t be Annie as there would be no reason to keep that a secret as much as I want to see her in the film. I also dont think they will now cast a Madge unless they were to combine her with the Delly character as there just isnt enought time to have all her scenes in the film and therefore would play such a minor part which would not impact the story (giving the medicine). I am not sure who it could be but think Coin would be intressting, as would Maysilee.
@Kara I actually really like the idea of Peeta having a sister (and that character taking the place of Delly). I have not heard that idea yet, so kudos to you for coming up with it!
Sigourney Weaver as Coin, Please!! I cant think of a more perfect casting.
people are tossing around a bunch but I personally think it’ll be Annie. I hope Atrid Berges Frisbey plays her. She and Sam had great chemestry and how cool would that be if they were reunited in this movie? They were both “lovers” in Pirates 4 and honestly I think Madge is gone. However, she would give some back story about Maysalee but I think chances are it’s going to be Annie and I really hope it is!
@antonia, kate–
i don’t think they’re trying to HIDE her, per se. it’s more like any non-tribute character doesn’t get a name until that actor is cast. for example, plutarch’s spot didn’t have his name there until philip seymour hoffman’s picture was moved into the grid. and all the other non-tribute characters are already there, so it just so happens that there’s this one left that’s still a mystery, but they simply can’t tell us who she is until they announce the actress who will be playing her.
i honestly think all the anticipation created by this “mystery woman” wasn’t something lionsgate was going for, but now that it’s happened, they’re milking it for all it’s worth by keeping that reveal for last. because think about it: if it’s annie or madge (or any of the other minor females who appear in catching fire), it’s not that big a reveal because they were both in the book in some shape or form; and if it’s coin, it’d be better for them to not reveal her at all, so why add that space in the grid in the first place? i don’t think it was meant to be a tease, but it became one and now they’re using it to keep people on their toes.
and now that kara mentioned this, if i could make a little poll: how many of you think bristel is female? ’cause i’ve always thought bristel was a guy, but then i looked it up in the books and realized suzanne collins never really specified his/her gender, and i’m wondering if i’m the only one who imagined bristel was male. (it would be just my luck if i was wrong and mystery woman turned out to be bristel, LOL. like blaise zabini all over again).
@Kara– Love your list!
Annie
Hope its Annie Cresta… hers is the casting I am probably most looking fowards to right n
Hope its Annie Cresta… hers is the casting I am probably most looking fowards to right now
I hope its Annie, and I wonder if she will be played by someone well known and that is why they are hiding her. I don’t think that its Coin because i hope the 2nd movie, much like the first, will remain as close to Katniss’ POV as possible and I think introducing Coin would reveal too much too soon. I feel like Madge would be anti-climatic unless they plan on doing some kind of love triangle (square?) between Katniss, Gale, Madge.
its the one of the potential guesses whos got the most famous actor. and in that case id bet my money on coin.
I figure that it will be Annie because she does play a part in the arena, etc so people will be totally confused if Finnick is yelling “Annie” and people are like who is she (that havent read the books that is). I think it will be a “major” character like her, they can always add Coin at the end but it wouldn’t be considered the “mystery character” because she has such a smaller part in CF.just my opinion!
I want it to be Annie. But common sense is telling me no…. it’s someone else.
I don’t mind so much who it is unless it’s Madge: for some reason I’m quite bothered by the idea of reintroducing her at this stage into the films.
I think it’s definitely Madge. It would be the most dramatic reveal for the fans. They would only do this with Coin if it were a big big actress like Meryl Streep or something.
I think there are a lot of good reasons for having Madge in Catching Fire after omitting her from THG.
In the first story, her role is too small to spend time introducing her (and to stay true to the book’s way of giving Katniss the pin, she would have to have been introduced with quite some detail – otherwise it would not make sense that she would visit Katniss after the Reaping). Having the pin be some cheap trinket given to Katniss by some unnamed Hob character (who I guess we all assume is Greasy Sae) was a much simpler way of doing it.
In the second book, though, Madge does have a complete character arc. She’s introduced as Katniss’ friend (something barely touched on in THG). She plays her role in helping Gale with the medicine and helping K/P train for the QQ. And most importantly, she DIES when D12 is bombed. Having her in the movie would provide an impact death for the audience – other than Madge, everyone Katniss seems to know in D12 survives – the Everdeens, the Hawthornes, Greasy Sae, even Delly Cartwright.
So I’m really hoping Mystery Girl is Madge.
I like savanna’s idea about coin the best!!!!!
mostly i think its Madge undersee!
President coin doesn’t come in until mockingjay so y introduce her?
Really i think theres no need to introduce coin early, it just doesn’t make sense plot-wise. Anyone who hadn’t read the books would be really confused. Personally I hope its Annie but I dont really see how that would fit in.. Unless it’s some sort of flashback. Which makes me pretty sure that it would be Madge, it seems the obvious choice because she is actually in the book and also she fits in with the main plot.The only thing that would make me unsure about this is the fact that they probably had a good reason to leave her out of the first movie so that same reason(s) could be holding them back now. That said, there IS a new director so basically… ANYTHING is possible
personally i cant wait to see what they do! x
itll be coin, trust me
