MTV Shares Their Hopes, Dreams and Fears for ‘Catching Fire’

MTV often runs articles on ‘The Hunger Games’, with their attention now turning to the sequel ‘Catching Fire’. This week they’re sharing their hopes, dreams and fears for the film:

Our Hopes
Director Gary Ross proved himself exceptionally loyal to “The Hunger Games” source material when he gave us the series’ first film — going so far as to collaborate with author Suzanne Collins — and we hope Francis Lawrence will be similarly true to the books as he brings “Catching Fire” to life. But Ross also knew when the cinema offered important, useful opportunities to deviate from his source material, and this movie needs the same touch: namely, by forgoing the extended flashbacks to book one and dishing up more character development in its place. The relationship between Katniss and Gale, for instance, got short shrift in the first movie and needs more attention on this go-round in order to spotlight and encapsulate the heroine’s conflict — not between this guy or that guy, but between the safety of her past and the uncertainty of a revolutionary future. Also: more behind-the-scenes glimpses of President Snow at his evil best will make him a more compelling villain.

Our Dreams
Knowing more or less what will happen in “Catching Fire,” the only place for unfounded speculation is all about the how of bringing it to life. And without giving away too much, it’s the settings where we’re pinning our most no-holds-barred fantasies: the arena for the 75th Hunger Games, and its peculiar traps and tricks, could be an extravaganza that blows its predecessor out of the water. And if there’s one thing we know about Lawrence, it’s that his background in music videos shows that he has the artistic vision to make this movie heart-stoppingly, jaw-droppingly awesome from a visual standpoint.

Our Fears
Like anyone who loved the books, we are seriously scurred [sic] of seeing a favorite scene get lost in translation or a favorite character get chopped. And when it comes to the latter, the risk of a movie-ruining mistake is bigger than ever before; the alliances that form in the Quarter Quell arena are vital to both the emotional core of this story, as well as the larger themes of the franchise. Or, in other words, if the other tributes don’t get enough screen time, “Catching Fire” risks being nothing more than another flat action flick with no soul instead of the portrait of a nascent revolution that we all know it could be.

I have to say that I’m very glad they didn’t use the phrase “love triangle” when referring to Katniss and Gale’s relationship. Do you share any of MTV’s hopes, dreams or fears? Have any of your own?

i never thought i’d say this, but: MTV UNDERSTANDS ME. D’:

yes, basically everything they said. all of it. particularly the gale thing and the focus on the tributes that form katniss’s alliance.

one thing i’m looking for, is not only behind-the scenes glimpses of president snow, but mostly scenes of the districts actually rebelling and THEN seeing snow’s reaction to that. such potential to be creepy as heck.

One thing I didn’t like at the end of THG was that the did not show how Katniss was questioning what she did and how it was going the feel back or act back in 12/Peeta’s lack of hurt and awareness that what he thinks is real was a ploy for survival. And given that they showed to rebellion in 8 already, it might negate their first-hand understanding that there is something brewing in the districts that has nothing to do with their winning the games, but the berries became a catalyst for many (and since they under-emphasized the pin (hey – it’s why Rue trusted Karniss) they need to figure out a way to show Katniss that people are on her side (how did it become a fashion statement? Why would Bonnie/Twill have it stamped into bread? )

Whoa. An article that I actually like from MTV. I’m shocked.

But I agree with everything that they are saying. I think that character development needs to be focused on in Catching Fire. I also think that the arena has to look REAL and DEADLY. If it looks fake, it won’t be believable.

I agree with almost everything they wrote. This sentence confused me: “The relationship between Katniss and Gale, for instance, got short shrift in the first movie and needs more attention on this go-round in order to spotlight and encapsulate the heroine’s conflict — not between this guy or that guy, but between the safety of her past and the uncertainty of a revolutionary future.” I don’t think it fits, because Gale represents both Katniss’s past AND the revolutionary future. Of Katniss, Peeta and Gale, GALE is the rebel and represents revolution more than any other character.

My other hopes and fears are tied to the casting of Finnick. I fear it’s a dreadful mistake, but hope I’m wrong.

Yea, they need to let all the new characters shine as well as the old, and we have to feel the shock and emotion of everything, like the old victors taking a stand. And, yes, the arena has to have a balance of feeling real and yet being a game, like the first one. My biggest fears are that it might come off as just a repeat of the first one, and that the writing wont be as brilliant as Gary’s.

Haha im also glad they didnt say “love triangle” either.

I’m still holding out for the “It was all for the games?” scene that we missed out on in the first film. I am dying to see that, and I think it would be great somewhere near the beginning to intensify a conflict that is not related to rebellion (directly). It would not only be great for us book fans, who missed it, but also for non book fans. I had a lot of people ask me if Katniss was faking her love for Peeta or not, because they never really say it outright.

I think it is very difficult to find that emotional part in films. Many films have it and some don’t ,even movies that are drama!
I think the connection between character and moviegoer is what brings that emotional part out. for even though Rue death was very sad. I thought the most emotional part in the movie was with Cato. The whole he is horrible, but the ending before he dies you see a different side very volunerable and you empathize with, at least I did. This stupid games is all he knows and that is what he is going to die doing.

Wow. MTV share most of my hopes, dreams & fears.

I believe Francis needs to focus on the alliances and focus more on other tributes on the 75th games for it to make more impact.

One scene I am PRAYING to be included is when Peeta talks to the morphling tribute dying and trying to comfort her. That always made me sad and love Peeta even more.

I’d also like to see Peeta and Katniss watching previous hunger games to know more about the other victors, and I especially hope they show Haymitch’s hunger games (2nd quarter quell)….

@Pete, I TOTALLY agree with you. That part of CF absolutely kills me. The connection between the morphling and Peeta is based on their ability to find and appreciate beauty. They’re trapped in the most horrifying circumstances – she’s dying and he’s planning to die – and they still hold on to that ability. I think it’s the part that ties most directly to Peeta’s “I wanna still be me” speech. The scene is not really important to the plot, but it’s important for the character, so I will be thrilled to see it.

I’m shocked that I’m saying this, but…. wow, MTV has alot of the same thoughts as I do. Ok, I was kinda upset at the end of the first movie because they didn’t give enough emphasis on Katniss leading Peeta on, and then having to choose between Gale. I hope that in Catching Fire, it is made clear to everyone watching, KATNISS IS INDESCISIVE… LOL jking.

Seriously though, if I hadn’t read the book, and I went to see the movie, I would be very confused at the end. “Like, why is Katniss being like this. It ain’t right to lead that boy on like that.” :P

I agree with @Pete and @haolelady. They better have that scene, because I think everyone reading it, felt their hearts melt, and it killed me and all my friends.

    NutsForBeetee (Wiress)

I agree with what alot of you are saying, and I hope to see the Peeta and Morphling(Who I nicknamed Sunflower) I think the first movie was a bit of a fail, but they did an okay job on it.

I have many fears for things in CF as for me, It’s the best out of the three books.

    My Fears
1)They won’t put in Beetee and Wiress’s meeting Katniss scene, I think that would be a great loss if they didn’t, as it shows how Katniss wants the nerds as her allies, even if the plan showed they already were.
2)The sugar cube scene, I will be very upset if thet cut this part, as it alwas makes me smile and laugh, and one thing to add to that is I hope Sam(I think that’s his name) Can pull off Finnick’s ‘purr’
3)They won’t show Wiress’s death scene, for me, Gloss, Cashmere and Wiress were always some of the best people in the games (Even if we never truly met them) I think it would be a great loss if they took this scene out of the movie.

    My Dreams
1)We get to know them a little better, maybe add in a few more lines about something that happened in their lives.
2)Back to Wiress and Beetee again, I found a website, and I’ve heard so many people saying this, but I hope in the movie they show Beetee and Wiress as married, as I think they would be lovely together.
3)Finnick’s voice, if he can’t pull off the ‘purr’ then I will be very upset.

    My Hopes
1)We get to see more of the tour then we did in the books.
2)More history, background of some of the others.
3)Katniss working out what Wiress means by ‘tick tock’

    Tick tock
