Scott Feinberg, The Hollywood Reporter’s lead awards analyst, writes the “Feinberg Forecast” each year – predicting the front runners, major threats and possibilities for the upcoming Oscar season. Whilst ‘The Hunger Games’ does not feature in his front runner or major threats list, Feinberg has listed the film as a possibility under a host of categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence)
  • Best Adapted Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Costume Designer
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Makeup
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Sound Editing
  • Best Sound Mixing

The list is updated each Sunday leading up to the Oscars, so it looks a little like Feinberg is hedging his bets at the moment! How wonderful would it be though for ‘The Hunger Games’ to receive an Academy Award nomination, or win one? I don’t know about you but I am pretty excited about the possibility :D

The wonderful and extremely talented Jennifer Lawrence is listed a front runner for Best Actress for her work in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, and several other critics agree. Best of luck Jennifer!

Do you think ‘The Hunger Games’ will take home an Oscar next year?

You can read the whole list at The Hollywood Reporter.

Ooh! I’ve been hoping for this to happen! It would just take us one step further from the Twilight references and show that the movie is really an amazing film in itself!

I don’t want to be overenthusiastic because I liked it, and I don’t get worked up about awards shows in general. It isn’t artsy-fartsy Oscar bait. Maybe technical awards are more likely than artistic ones. I remember another viewer saying that the characters and acting were good, but not that good.

I wouldn’t hold my breath except perhaps a nomination for sound and score. Silver Linings Playbook on the other hand I can almost guarantee several nominations. It’s got Harvey Weinstein behind it after all

though i love that the movie’s getting some kind of buzz, i doubt THG will get nominated in any of the major categories. i could maybe see something in the technical categories, but even then it would be tough competition. i would LOVE to see a nomination for jennifer because her portrayal of katniss was fantastic and basically carried the entire movie, but i’m thinking if she does get a nom this year, it’ll be for SLP. either way it’ll be a big boost for the franchise. :)

i would really love to see them actually hit the big categories with the mockingjay films, though. i think that book had the most oscar potential. i hope lionsgate’s choice of director for MJ goes accord to that, because that could be the game-changer, not only for the franchise but for YA films as a whole.

Hunger Games won’t be getting anything except technical nominations. Silver Linings Playbook could very well clean house, especially since it’s got the Weinstein Oscar Machine to back it up.

Josh needs to step up in Catching fire. Although none can compare to JLaw

If Harry Potter could barely pull in a few nom’s I don’t like THG’s chances

Best Picture- Not a snowball’s chance in a firestorm. Just no. Would be cool, but no.
Best Director-Nope. Shaky fight scenes and cheap CGI are his responsibility and it will hurt his chances.
Best Actress- Probably not, though she’ll have a nom lined up for “Playbook” no doubt she did great (especially in the hallucination Katniss/Mother scene) but in fairness, her performance before reaching the Capitol was stale. I understand she was conveying a stunned and jaded teenage girl, but the Academy won’t be moved.
Best Adapted Screenplay-Nope. Too much left out.
    Best Cinematography-Maybe a nom
Best Costume Designer-I think it has a good chance for a nomination, deserves a win, but Harry Potter couldn’t even pull a win for this one, so I don’t think the odds are in THG’s favor so to speak.
Best Film Editing-Nope. Not even a nom. The only standout moment was the tracker jacker hallucination scene.
    Best Makeup-Maybe a nom. Maybe a win.
Best Original Score-Nothing too fantastic so probably nothing here.
Best Production Design-Maybe the design of the Capitol will be enough, but consideration is held back by a pretty unoriginal looking arena.
Best Sound Editing-Could pull a nomination.
    Best Sound Mixing-Nope

@Alex I do agree with you on some points. Especially when Harry Potter never won an oscar wouldn’t surprise me if the Hunger Games didn’t win one (but hopefully that will change with Catching Fire or Mockingjay.) But if the Hunger Games is even nominated for one oscar, that would be amazing and would be at least to be recognized by the Academy Awards.

I have a love hate relationship with the academy awards. Even if something I like wins, I just can’t trust them. There have been too many instances when I thought they were bias. Cool if this happens, but I wouldn’t count on it. There is a lot of competition out there. Especially when it comes to foreign films.

    I HAVE A QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok i dont wanna sound dumb but who picks which nomination wins at the oscars? i dont think they do voting on websites, do they??? i really have no clue. if they get nominated it will be my first time watching it though!

    @addy
The movies are nominated by members in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who will vote for movies in the category they have worked in such as people who worked with special affects would nominate movies with the best special affects. They are basically “critics” who “know” there stuff with movies, but they can be very biased. Like what happend last year to Harry Potter being nominated for best special effects but lost to Hugo whether or not Hugo had better special effects than Harry Potter they still wanted the awards to go to Hugo. And the the oscars are a very hight class pristine event that is nothing compare to other movie events like MTV movie awards. Any movie that even gets nominated and not wins an award is still a great achievement and means a lot.
