Variety is reporting that Emmy award-winning Danny Strong has been approached to write the script for the two ‘Mockingjay’ movies.

“Mockingjay” isn’t the first time Strong has been tapped to adapt a bestselling book finale, as he was also hired to rewrite “The Lost Symbol” for Sony, Imagine Entertainment and director Mark Romanek. Book is a sequel to Dan Brown’s hit thrillers “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons.” Scribe recently wrote “The Butler” for Lee Daniels, and he’s also co-producing that historical drama. Additionally, Strong is writing a legal drama series inspired by a famous father-daughter lawyer duo for CBS, Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Prods. and director David O. Russell. He started his career in front of the camera, with recurring roles on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Gilmore Girls” and most recently, AMC’s “Mad Men.”

UPDATE: THR is reporting that two other writers are on the shortlist for ‘Mockingjay’.

Other writers on the shortlist for the gig included The Cabin in the Woods and Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard and Vanessa Taylor, a writer and co-exec producer on Game of Thrones.

I don’t wanna talk about mockingjay :( it’s the last movie I know there’s gonna be two parts but still

  2.

    Is he good?

The writers for the Catching Fire script are absolutely brilliant, and everyone is saying the script is so good.

I want something as good as, if not best, than Catching Fire script. Mockingjay is my favourite book, and they need to do the book justice, because it talks about so many themes with a darker approach. And character development galore… hoping it’s perfect.

Ok so now there are three more contenders added to the list for script writers according to the hollywood reporter

    Chris Terrio – Argo
Vanessa Taylor – Game of Thrones
Drew Goddard – cloverfield, cabin in the woods, and LOST

      Thanks Knightlock!

I know this is random but Suzanne Collins is still committed to the movies right?

Yes, Watertribe tribute, Suzanne Collins is still committed. She is still an Executive Producer and will stay that way if she and Nina Jacobson have their way.

Please dear god, Drew Goddard. That would make my life so nerdtastic.

@woodster haha I know me to, I love Cloverfield and just saw Cabin in the woods and that was also great. I think he is perfect for handeling the scifi action (and lizard muts haha) part of the story.

I’d love to see what a female writer could do with it, especially one involved with Game of Thrones.

  9.

I do love David O’Russell. Not that that means anything for Strong, but at least he’s working with a great, ya know? I think Strong seems fine. Don’t really know enough to judge.

So happy they are already looking for writers, they’ve got less than a year now to finish the scripts. :)

Ok this will sound sooooooooooooo stupid but has it been confirmed that ‘Mockingjay’ will be in two parts?

  12.

@Curl-Girl- yes, it has been confirmed. They will be released November 2014 and November 2015.

I’m personally okay with any of these choices as long as they treat the source material respectfully. I do have to say though… We have two directors listed with close ties to Joss Whedon… Could we maybe just get Joss Whedon?? I know, he’s probably insanely busy and there’s little to no chance… but it couldn’t go without saying. :)

i’ve always loved danny strong as an actor, though admittedly i haven’t seen anything he’s written– he seems to have done more television stuff than films, which might be a completely different experience. but he’s won at least a couple emmys for his writing, so that at least scores some points… the others sound good as well, i’ve heard many good things about their respective works, so i guess at this point i could get on board with any of them.

that said, i’m just happy we’re hearing rumors about writers for mockingjay. there may be some truth to the idea that lionsgate is already looking, which makes me feel a lot better– they really need to hit the ground running with the MJ movies, there’s no time to wait around. the sooner they get the script solidified, the better.

@Jas – if we could get Joss Whedon, I think I’d have a Geekgasm and flat out die on the spot from geeking-out overload.

Drew Goddard is also a good choice.

I know nothing of Danny Strong’s writing ability, but I do remember him as Jonathan on Buffy. Interesting.

Joss Whedon himself would likely get the general mood of MJ down right, but considering how pretty much every romantic relationship he featured wound up with the lovers being separated and/or dead, I’d be concerned that his approach to the Katniss-Peeta relationship will emphasize the tragic aspects of it, and remove one of the few positive, hopeful aspects of the story. I do NOT want Katniss and Peeta to be portrayed in the end as lost souls merely hanging on to each other for comfort, both too damaged by the war to really be capable of love, and I can definitely see Whedon interpreting their relationship that way.

Danny Strong being mostly a TV writer may be helpful if he does write both halves of the script, since in TV series, the stories develop over a much longer time period than the typical movie. He also wrote “Game Change” which is about the Obama-McCain presidential race, but obviously also featured Clinton and Palin as female politicians, and I could see him creating more scenes from Coin to develop a little more as a character, the way Ross and Sutherland did for Snow.

Vanessa Taylor would also be an interesting choice, since Game of Thrones also deals with a lot of political intrigue that involves both men and women, and I could also see her expanding beyond Katniss’s POV and providing us more of what’s happening in the Capitol and D13 war rooms.

    @satsuma
I always see you posts on fan websites and they are always really long and smart. I don’t know if its cause I’m a 8th grader and I don’t read stuff like that every day but I’m just saying your smart cause every time I’m confused about something or don’t know who the person they are talking about is and I see your posts I get it. Anyway yeah that’s probably so random but every time someone helps me (even if they don’t know it) I like to thank them soooo thanks!

Yeah I know right! This is such a serious job (at least to me) and if they don’t do the book justice I’m gonna have a fit. But remember we always have Suzanne Collins! She won’t let them do that!

@Satsuma: I don’t agree with your view of Whedon – I am a big fan of Whedon (I don’t know if you are) and what you describe seems more like a popular misconception about him than about his actual work. Whedon can, like nobody else, portray damaged people finding love in the strangest of circumstances, against all odds, and rebuilding their relationship from ashes. He’s never portrayed any of his protagonists as incapable of love – not in my opinion, anyway. I know that some people had different interpretations of some of his romantic storylines, but I believe that was missing the point just as the people who think Katniss and Peeta didn’t love each other in the end are missing the point.

Also, regarding Joss Whedon *SPOILERS FOR DOLLHOUSE, SERENITY AND BUFFY SEASON 6*

    ——————–
    —————-
    —————–
    ——————

    ————–

Let’s not forget that in Dollhouse epilogue, Victor/Sierra (aka Anthony/Priya) ended up happy together and had children, their love surviving all the crap that they had been put through. Joss also let Simon and Kaylee finally consummate their relationship and end up together at the end of Serenity, which also ended hopefully for Mal/Inara. Joss has also said that he regretted killing Tara on BtVS, even though this had to be done to make Willow go dark, and that he never would have split Wash and Zoe if Firefly had gone on for more than one season; his decision in Serenity was because he needed to show how high the stakes were (pretty much the same as Suzanne Collins killing Finnick in Mockingjay, isn’t it? Zoe is even shown in the canon comics to be pregnant with Wash’s child after his death, just like Annie.) Zoe/Wash are the proof that Joss can convincingly portray a perfect, loving marriage (and with two characters who both defy traditional gender expectations), he seems exactly the kind of person who would get Katniss/Peeta.
