Liam Hemsworth Talks Action and Set Injury in “Catching Fire”

In an article with USA Today, Liam Hemsworth talks about his “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” character, Gale, and how his increased screentime and action stunts led to a slight injury onset this time around.
During a stunt last week on the Atlanta set, Hemsworth reports that he took a spill, but gutted through it.
“I twisted my knee,” Hemsworth says. “I try to just fight through it. There’s so many people standing around waiting for you to do your thing. You feel sort of obligated not to let everyone down.”
In fact, Hemsworth reports that his character, Gale, sidelined from the action in the first Hunger Games, really gets into the swing of things in Catching Fire.
“There’s a bunch of action in this one,” he vows. “All of the characters have much more action than they did in the first one.”
The crew have been shooting in locations around Atlanta since September. While Josh Hutcherson vowed an even buffer Peeta in the new film, Hemsworth says his studly Gale is about the same as the original film. He did take some time before shooting started to “lose some weight” to get the proper look.
“It’s The Hunger Games,” he says. “My character needs to look hungry. A little bit.”
What kind of action do you think Gale will have in “Catching Fire”? I think we’re all looking forward to the whipping scene (in a good way– not because we want to actually see that happen to Gale, but because it’s such an emotional part of the book) but do you think they’re filming the escape from D12? Or was his injury from light stunt work in the woods or an entirely new scene written just for the movie?

i’m thinking it’ll be the escape from D12, but i would love to see some sort of skirmish scene before that, maybe while katniss and peeta are already in the arena– it could add to the feeling that law enforcement presence in D12 was increased as a result of katniss’s actions. if there was any sort of confrontation between the people and the peacekeepers, gale would definitely be there.
sad to hear about his ankle, i know how much twisting your ankle sucks– but hey, at least he didn’t get kicked in the head by one of his co-stars.
Carla-very funny! Remembering the Hunger Games injury to Josh from Jenn(she is going to feel awful again!)
Liam’s comments here made me a little nervous – more action? More screentime for Gale? I love Gale tons, but both these peeks at the film are leading me to believe that Catching Fire won’t be nearly as close to the books as The Hunger Games was. I’m all about being creative with an adaptation, but I’m worried they might be taking it too far? But who knows, it’s certainly too early to make realistic predictions about the quality of the Catching Fire movie.
@tdouglas. Remember though, Gale’s role is bigger in Catching Fire. In The Hunger Games, you only see him at the very beginning. In CF, the Games don’t start till almost half-way through. You’ve got the whipping scene, the woods scene, the scenes at her house. And of course, the scene at the very end. So I think it makes sense that Liam would say Gale has more screentime.
Good job, Liam!! Just push through! I hope it was the whipping scene!
Maybe it was the whipping scene? I hope he gets better soon, though.
I am really hoping they including the bombing or District 12 and showing the escape and gale fighting off the peacekeepers.
Oww, as someone who has twisted her ankle pretty severely a couple of days ago I know how much that hurts!! I can only imagine the knee would be as painful.. Go the Aussie battler spirit though lol
As for the scene it happened in, it could be just about anything – but its pretty exciting to think we’ll get to see the escape from D12.
He’s a Capricorn, i’m a Capricorn.
My ankle is injured and his leg is injured… coincidence? I think not.
Vijeta – It must be destiny!
I think we’ll see the escape from D12 just like we saw the uprising in D8 in the first movie. After all, the movies are not from Katniss’ perspective, so it would be quite strange to leave something as important as that out. Might not be a very long scene, but they have to put it in there somewhere.
oh my word! i cant stop thinking about what scene it is! i hope it is the whipping scene, but probably not as he doesnt have to do except pass out! and that doesnt involve too much action! so excited about that scene!
thats bad hope liam okay
i cant wait to see the whipping scene! il ove gale, dont get me wrong, but i think that they’re right- it is an extremely emotional part of the book/ movie. As for more action, Im fine with that, i felt the Hunger Games had a little bit to less action, but I hope they throw in their the scene where Gale kisses Katniss! that plays a huge part in the whole love-triangle aspect of the movie. Honestly, I care more about them getting that right than the action. I hope Lawrence has a romantic side!
OMG I CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE MOVIE! Im going crazy. And the trailer doesnt even come out untill like July!! I really want to know wha scene it is. I dont think he would twist his knee during the whipping, and im not sure they would show bombing of district 12! I have no idea. Im making up own scenes in my head of how i would imagine the bombing, and that would be the best way someone would twist thier knee….
