By the Book: Catching Fire Predictions for Chapter 10

Hard to believe but we’re up to Chapter 10 of our series By the Book, where the Mockingjay.net staff predicts what parts of ‘Catching Fire’ will make it from the book and into the film, what scenes we’re afraid might get cut, and what quotes we hope to hear included in the script.
By the Book contains spoilers for Catching Fire, so if you haven’t read the book and don’t want to ruin any surprises, stop reading right now!
Chapter 10 begins with Katniss heading to the woods to try and clear her head, where she runs into Bonnie and Twill, who have escaped from District 8. They hold out a piece of bread with the Mockingjay symbol and proceed to tell Katniss that they’re on her side. Katniss questions what this means and discovers from Bonnie and Twill that there was an attempted uprising in District 8, where Katniss had helped spark the movement. Bonnie and Twill then tell Katniss they are on their way to District Thirteen, where they suspect residents are secretly living underground. Katniss leaves the girls in the woods to return home, her head swimming with information, and she only just manages to stop herself before running into a fence now buzzing with electricity..

I think the part with Bonnie and Twill will be in the movie. It’s important for Katniss to know about District 13, so she’ll probably meet them in the woods. I don’t think they’ll explain everything about Bonnie stealing the Peacekeepers uniforms, and their travel to district 12, though the rebellion in District 8 will probably be explained. So I think they’ll meet in the woods by the lake, and talk about that. I really can’t wait to see how the lake and the house will be!
Lines I Hope Make It
“It means we’re on your side” (Bonnie) because the mockingjay symbol is very important in both Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

Since I predicted that Bonnie and Twill would be in, but not by so much, I think most of this chapter will be condensed into five minutes of conversation. Katniss won’t teach them anything or spend the entire day with them, but I don’t see why she wouldn’t load them up with supplies, so I think that makes it in. This is one of the chapters I think they have the most opportunity to condense, so they’ll meet, Katniss will hear about the uprising and their theory about District 13, and then they part ways. I don’t know if the electrified fence will make it in because of continuity because the D12 fence in the first movie was just ridiculous. It looked like fencing to keep cattle out and Katniss didn’t have to put out any effort to get through it. If they keep to continuity, I think Katniss will simply go home and find the Peacekeepers waiting.
Lines I Hope Make It
“She doesn’t know,” says Bonnie softly. “Maybe not about any of it.” – I absolutely LOVE this line and I hope it makes it in!

I see no reason why Bonnie and Twill have to be cut out of the storyline, although I suppose the same argument could be applied to Madge. Even if Katniss finds out about the uprising in District 8 through other means (i.e. on a television in Snow’s mansion as suggested in a previous By the Book) she still doesn’t know how it went or about the possibility of District 13. The characters (who potentially may not be Bonnie and Twill but someone else) provide an easy way to pass on this information, rather than adding an extra scene or two and getting someone like Haymitch to explain it to Katniss. Given in recent days and weeks we have seen Francis Lawrence go to lengths to film the reapings of other districts, I am fairly confident this sequence will make it into the script as it can easily be played out in just a couple of minutes screen time. I do, however, expect their appearance to be drastically shortened and altered. I don’t expect that we’re going to get a whole day out in the woods but I do think Katniss will still head there seeking an escape and bump into them. Instead of being injured or camping they may be passing through at the time, quickly chat with Katniss and leave. This way important facts are exchanged and Katniss begins to think about D13 and whether it may exist. She also then knows that at least one district and possibly others have tried to rebel or are ready to rebel against the Capitol, which sets the stage for later events. Importantly though, this exchange means she is outside and will be ‘trapped’ in the woods, which leads to one of my favourite scenes in the next chapter.
Lines I Hope Make It
Bonnie: “It means we’re on your side”
Katniss: “What do you expect to find in District Thirteen?”

Bonnie and Twill haven’t been cast, and I don’t think they will be in the movie. They will probably show the District 8 rebellion instead. Characters providing exposition is really not a cinematic device – in a movie, you have to avoid exposition as much as you can, and go with “show, don’t tell”.
They’re not going to announce small roles like this one, tbh. They didn’t even announce all the tributes, so I think there’s still a chance. They never did announce Romulus Thread either.
I hope this scene makes it in the movie. they proabably wont include some the information like Bonnies family and everything, but they need to include it! or how else will Katniss find out about District 13? they also better include the whole mockingjay wing in all the camera shots because that is so relevent! i will be very angry if they cut that!
Pros: This conversation gives us information about the uprising (otherwise how would Katniss know what is happening in other districts?), confirms to us that Katniss is becoming a symbol of a growing rebellion (without her efforts), and it also plants the seed of possibility that District 13 still exists. Cons: Takes time away from our main characters.
I think/hope that Francis Lawrence will include a brief Bonnie and Twill because I think it will up the drama and it gives glimpses of things to come.
Unfortunately, I think Ivana is right. The fact that we haven’t heard about those roles being cast makes me think that we won’t see them.
i hope they do have a bonnie and twill casted i would love to see them make it in the movie
Bonnie and twill won’t be in the movie and think it will be just fine without them too!
I think there will be a brief scene with them probably. Probably getting rid of most of the details and just using the main part. The uprisings in 8 and their belief in 13.
I’m not expecting them to be cast or even named in the credits, but I think they’ll be there. It may be similar to the woman in The Hob from THG, everyone pretty much assumed that was Greasy Sae, so we might get two women in the woods and as book fans we know that they’re Bonnie and Twill.
Would it not be better to have this nearer the top of the newsfeed? A lot of people are going to miss it down here.
I think we’re far enough into the middle of the story that the order of events in the film is less and less likely to remain consistent with the order of events in the book: they’ll probably take a bit of these scene here, mix it with some of this scene here, do it in this order etc.
Nonetheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if this chapter does remain consistent to the book. It’s very straightforward in terms of what happens, yet brings a lot to the story.
I wonder if they’ll replace D8 with D11 – they might feel it would be simpler to keep the rebellious aspect of the story represented by just that district (especially since GR started that ball rolling in THG).
They could add the enlarged fence in the scenes where they show district 12 being garded more. Or maybe not the parts when she got injured and had to stay in bed were long and boring.
@11thHeaven – Lately there hasn’t been so much news to contend with! Once the Halloween contest is over we can pin it for a few days
I tend to think that B+T will be cut, or perhaps morphed into one character. I also have a pet theory that the future President Paylor will actually introduced in CF as a D8 refugee. However, since so far there have been nothing about Annie being cast, and she’s actually shown in the CF book itself, I’m starting to doubt this theory.
The question I have is that, if B+T are left out, will Katniss find out about D13 in some other way, or will the movie keep that under wraps until the very end? While this would be a departure from the books, it might actually cast Katniss in a less clueless light, since in CF, she seems to have no clue, despite everything she learns about the rebellion, that the rebels might have infiltrated the Games, and this would explain the behavior of Finnick and other tributes to actively protect her and Peeta.
Like Madge wasn’t cast, I don’t think they will either. I think they’ll want to spend more time on the other parts of the book and will cut this out. I think they’ll bring in the District 13 theory somehow, Bonne and Twill just won’t be specfic characters.
I think it will likely be cut. There are a few important plot points established by this scene that could come from elsewhere:
* The fence can be shown to be elecrified on Katniss’ way into the forest (rather than on the way out), forcing her to turn back and demonstrating Thread’s new oppressive rule.
* The rebellion (whether in D8 or elsewhere) can, as pointed out above, can be revealed to Katniss in Snow’s mansion.
* Speculation about the existence of D13 could just as easily come about from one of the main characters noticing the recycled background footage on their own.
Lines I hope make it:
Bonnie: It means we’re on your side.
Bonnie: I can’t believe we actually got to meet you. You’re practically all anyone’s talked about since-
Katniss: I know. I know. Since I pulled out those berries.
Katniss: Thirteen? There’s no thirteen. It got blown off the map.
Twill: Seventy-five years ago.
Don’t worry about Bonnie and Twill…Graesy Sae wasn’t cast, but she made it.
