UPDATE: @LionsgateNews has just tweeted confirmation that Francis Lawrence will return as director of Mockingjay 1 and 2.
Collider has the exclusive that Francis Lawrence, director for ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, will be returning to film the final two films in ‘The Hunger Games’ movie franchise.
We have just learned that Francis Lawrence, who was hired to direct The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has now been tapped to helm the remainder of the series. While author Suzanne Collins‘ The Hunger Games books amount to a trilogy, Lionsgate has split the final novel, Mockingjay into two parts, as is now the custom for major adaptation of best-selling book series.

i’m not surprised– the current director generally gets first dibs on the next installment unless he bows out, like gary ross did. still, i hope this also means the lionsgate execs are seeing good things from catching fire so far. guess we’ll have to wait until the movie premieres to judge whether we support this decision or not.
With the amount of money Lionsgate has riding on the next 3 films, this is definitely a ringing endorsement for the job FL is doing. I’m excited!
YAY!
maybe that means they like how he is doing so far!
also that means CONSISTENCY THROUGHT THE 3 FILMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, thumbs up to Francis Lawrence the work horse, he is certainly going to be busy!
I really cant be the judge of this until I see catching fire first, but Lionsgate must really like what he is doing so far with catching fire to bring him back for the mockingjay and if thats the case then I take that as a good sign that Catching Fire is good enough to bring him back again. Which makes me happy
Yay! It can only be good news, the way I see it.
Very happy for Francis. I hope this means he’s doing a great job with CF. This might also mean that Newton Howard will return to score the Mockingjay films, which would be great. It would be a shame to see Katniss become the Mockingjay without hearing James’ Mockingjay theme.
I don’t like this, simply because I’d love to see variety and thats actually what I thought they were gonna do.
I always thought the whole Gary Ross saying he didn’t have time its cause they told him they wanted different directors for each sequel (except Mockingjay)
Oh well…
Gary Ross’ statement and everything we’ve heard from people who talked to him about it seemed nothing but sincere. I didn’t doubt that at all.
However, whether they intended to keep directors or change them I’m really surprised that it was confirmed so early in the process of Catching Fire.. I guess I was also surprised when they announced the release dates, so this may be a pattern we will see a lot of.
I’m happy there will be continuity, but at the same time this makes me more nervous for Catching Fire. I’ll just avoid thinking about it for now lol.
Glad to see they learned their lesson from Ross’s departure – snag ‘em early and lock ‘em in.
I remember that the earlier assumption was that Lawrence would not be retained for the MJ movies because the turnaround time between movies was too short, that it just wasn’t practical for Lawrence to finish up the CF post-production and marketing, then jump into the MJ movies. So, it seems that he must have impressed LG execs not just with the quality of his CF work so far, but his efficiency. Hopefully the fandom will be happy with the CF movie, because otherwise, the wait for the MJ movies could be very depressing around here…
On one hand I’m happy because the next three movies will be consistent. On the other hand…
. You’ve got me figured out, Lionsgate.
HE BETTER BE PRETTY DARNED GOOD OR ELSE THIS FANGIRL’S GONNA—-continue to be a fan of the series no matter what happens
As much as I like him, he better not mess it up. We are a fandom well trained in knife-throwing, axe-whielding and arrow shooting.
