Breaking Dawn – Part 2 Pushes Lionsgate Past $1B Domestic Box Office
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 opened in theaters this past weekend, making over $140M in the USA. This means Lionsgate, having recently acquired Twilight‘s parent studio Summit Entertainment, has reached a milestone with this release: crossing the billion-dollar mark in domestic box office revenue for the first time ever. This achievement was also helped greatly by the release of The Hunger Games back in March, which made over $400M in North American theaters.
Since there will be no more Twilight movies, it’s more likely that the rest of the projects in Lionsgate’s portfolio will reap the benefits of this success– let’s hope this means good things for Catching Fire and the two Mockingjay films!

I think we beat TBD2 in the USA for opening weekend, didn’t we (150ish million?)? Woo!
@donna– yes, THG made around $155M on its opening weekend. of course, this is only taking into account domestic box office… BD2 already took almost $200M in foreign markets, while THG made around $280M in its entire run outside the USA. i’d say they’re not really comparable, one being the last movie in an established franchise and the other one being just the first– though it is nice to say that twilight couldn’t beat our “3rd highest opening weekend ever” record.
lionsgate is also filming DIVERGENT the movie, which I’m sure is gonna be a success like THG and Twilight since it has a big book fan following.
