Video: Josh Hutcherson Reveals His Favorite Scene and How He Split His Pants While Filming

Last week, we posted a Josh Hutcherson interview with MTV, but here’s another video, which looks like it was taken during the same interview.

Warning: Video contains a “Catching Fire” plot spoiler

You can read an excerpt from the clip after the cut.

Among the many moments fans are surely craving is Peeta’s proposal to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in front of the bright lights of Caesar Flickerman’s cameras. But for Hutcherson, the highly anticipated scene didn’t quite go as planned.

“I have proposed to Katniss,” Hutcherson confirmed. “It was good. Actually, funny story: When we shot it, the actual proposal itself is done where you don’t hear what we’re saying, so I was just saying gibberish while I was proposing to her on one knee. Actually, the very first time I went to get down on one knee my pants ripped right down the crotch. The worst thing that could happen when you’re proposing to somebody is that your pants rip right down the crotch, and that’s what happened to Peeta. So… he’s doomed. He’s doomed. Poor guy, he just can’t catch a break.”

Thankfully, the pants predicament seems to be the worst the actor has weathered while filming. In fact, when asked which scenes were his favorite to film so far, Hutcherson was quick with one pivotal moment in particular:

“The Reaping stuff was really great. The Reaping stuff we did was really powerful, really well written,” he recalled. “The extras were so awesome. Like, literally, every extra was a very, very talented actor, and so in the really emotional scenes, all the background really brought their A-game. It really added a lot. That was really cool to see that all come together.”

I love each and every interview that Josh gives and now I’m looking forward to watching the Reaping more than ever! And the engagement scene, I can just imagine it as the end of a Victory Tour montage with epic music playing so we can’t hear their words.

I’m relieved the moment will be in silence. Its not a real moment for either of them, he may love her but he doesn’t want that so its really sad and uncomfortable it happens. I wouldn’t have wanted to them try and create the moment with words, because it isn’t in the book, so i’m pleased they are doing it this way instead.

I can see a montage of sorts too…it’d have some kind of powerful music playing while they briefly show them doing each district, and then have it ending with a shot of the proposal in front of the Capitol crowd…it’ll be SO good. ;)

I can see that it would save time to just have like a montage with all the victory tours then peeta proposing to katniss and the wedding dresses comming to her home with music in the backround. Then maybe they could stop when she try’s the dresses? But I like the montage idea it saves time and I always found the starting of catching fire slow so they can just do this then get to the quarter quell quicker :)

There are three more video clips from the interview on the MTV site (Josh talking about Francis Lawrence, Sam Claflin and the set, respectively), is there any chance of seeing them soon without the MTV area restriction?

  16.

Hahahah, oh please, please Francis Lawrence, let there be a blooper reel on the DVD release!!

I like the sounds of the proposal scene too, can’t wait to see it for real.

@Ivana – I usually get around MTV videos through Google, I go and find out the title, and then use the Video tab down the side. Usually someone else has recorded it and I can watch it :)

When ever the proposal scene happens I’m just going to imagine his pants ripping and bust out laughing:D. Josh is so lovely, I appreciate his existence!

LOL, nice one. He’s a good sport.

I too am disappointed we won’t get dialogue in that scene. I thought it should’ve been included in the book and I was hoping they’d amend that part in the movie – partly for dramatic reasons but mostly because man oh man, Hutch would’ve NAILED that dialogue. But it’s all good. He’ll still nail it with his epic facial expressions.

I agree with SPM. Josh would have nailed those lines. He,s such a great public speaker! (Both in the movie, and out!).

I actually LIKE the fact that the proposal will not be heard, just seen. It is very true to the book, and I think shows that CF (unlike the THG movie) will make it quite obvious that the Victory Tour “showmance” is NOT REAL.

Also, while many people have jumped to the conclusion that the lack of audio in this scene means it will only show up as the end of a Victory Tour montage with a soundtrack, I actually doubt that. Well, it’s more that I hope it won’t be the case, because then we won’t get the scene in which Katniss suggests Peeta propose, he gets upset, and Haymitch tells her that “he wanted it to be real”.
I also think that the D11 scenes will get a more in-depth treatment, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they tweak the timing of the D8 riot, so that it occurs WHILE K and P are passing through. Though I can see some of the other District scenes being shot as a montage.
