Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Silver Linings Playbook is making ripples through Hollywood and the buzz she’s getting is growing stronger each day as we head toward awards season. The film recently received five nominations to the Independent Spirit Awards, sweeping through all the major categories, including a nom for Jennifer in the Best Female Lead category for her role as Tiffany.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival also announced this Monday that they will be honoring Jennifer with their Outstanding Performer of the Year award, for her work in both Silver Linings Playbook and The Hunger Games:

“Ms. Lawrence impressed us earlier this year in The Hunger Games, but has now left us moonstruck with her career-defining performance in Silver Linings Playbook – recalling classic turns by Lombard, Stanwyck and Colbert,” SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said in a statement. “Naming her our Outstanding Performer of the Year is an understatement.”

We’re very happy to see our talented leading lady getting the recognition she deserves. Keeping our fingers crossed for that Oscar nom!

This is very important for Jennifer. Starting with the “Poker House” she has always played characters that were slightly younger than she was and done a great job. This proves she can give an award winning performance playing an older character and should open up new roles.

@hansen – “open up new roles”? It’s not like she’s a starving actress struggling to gain entree into Holllywood’s inner circle. She’s already being called the next Meryl Streep. From Winter’s Bone to THG to SLP to Selena, she’s long been getting some of the choicest roles out there.

Saw this movie over the weekend! She was so great in this role and deserves all of the praise! Enjoyed the movie so much–the show I went to was sold out and everyone clapped at the end of it!

@SPM I misspoke: I should have said that it will open up new types of roles. Jennifer is extremely successful and would have had no problem finding work regardless. However any actor who has been successful in one kind of role runs the danger of being type cast. As evidence I would point out that David O. Russel has said that at first he thought she was too young for the role of Tiffany and auditioned her only as a courtesy. In fact apparently he auditioned her by Skype partially because he did not think it was worth their while to fly her out. The producer of the movie has said that before the Skype audition she was not being seriously considered but after the audition she was the front runner. An academy award nomination for SLP and no one will ever again say that Jennifer cannot play an older character – that should open up new types of roles.
I saw SLP last weekend and she is amazing – one more piece of evidence that she has the potential to be the greatest film actor of her generation.

@hansen – I gotcha. I don’t necessarily think Jen is Streep’s second coming, but I do admire the versatility of her work even at such a young age, which portends very well for her future career.

That audition story is amazing, though. Obviously she’s just blowing away casting agents/directors left and right.
