Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 85th Academy Awards for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. Jennifer goes up against Naomi Watts (The Impossible), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) and Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts Of The Southern Wild). This is Lawrence’s 2nd Oscar nomination.

Also nominated is Philip Seymour Hoffman for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Master alongside Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained), Robert DeNiro (Silver Linings Playbook), Alan Arkin (Argo) and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln). This marks Hoffman’s 4th Oscar nomination, winning once for his performance in Capote.

The nominations were announced this morning by Seth MacFarlane and a very funny Emma Stone. Sadly, there were no nominations for The Hunger Games. Congratulations to both Jennifer and Philip, may the odds be ever in their favor! To see the full list of Nominees, please visit the Oscar site.

She is now the youngest actress ever to receive 2 Best Actress noms all in the span of 2 short years! That is so nuts to me. Anyone who still doubt she’s the next Streep/Hepburn is kidding themselves.

This is great news for Jennifer. This year she has proved that she can be both “the face of heroism” and a comic actress. With two Oscar nominations and a blockbuster to her credit it is likely that she will be seriously considered for almost any role that she wants. However, I doubt if she will win a Oscar this year. One of the reason’s is that the competition is tough but the other reason is Jennifer herself. She is obviously talented and in her off screen appearances is funny, charming and loveable. However she does not appear dignified and I think this will hurt her with the Oscar voters who are generally concerned with the dignity of their “craft”. In particular I don’t see anyone winning an Oscar who can be quoted (even if it is out of context) as saying “Acting is stupid”. I hope I am wrong because I agree with Nicki, as far as raw talent is concerned she has enough of it to become one of the greats.

@hansen – I know you’re right, but that “acting is stupid” comment actually makes me root for her even more. :)

@hansen: She didn’t say “acting is stupid”. That’s a misquote. She said that she shouldn’t be treated as someone incredibly important, more important than people who save lives, like doctors or firemen, and added “I make movies. It’s stupid” which i took to mean that it’s stupid to treat someone who makes movies as such an important person. Then some websites turned that into “Acting is stupid”.

@Ivana I agree – that,s why I said “even if out of context”. In fact in its full context the statement is actually an affirmation of acting since the quote is related it to the story of a badly burned girl who was inspired by Katniss. Jennifer then explains how this story helped her see the value of what she does. However, it was not reported in context and unfortunately the reporting is what will leave the impression.

This is awesome! i’m so proud of the both of them. i have no doubt jen will take the oscar this time, because she’s simply the best, and i truly hope PSH gets it as well because his role in “the master” has been making waves with critics. (i still have a hard time believing how an actor of his caliber and trajectory actually accepted being a part of our cast– it blows my mind!). i love how talented and well-respected the hunger games cast is. best of luck to both of them!

oh, and i forgot to say: i wasn’t really expecing THG to get nominated but the fact that mirror, mirror of all movies managed to get a costume nom when THG got nothing… well, that stings. sigh. maybe next year, i guess.

Good for you, Jen! Knew she’d get the nom. @hansen I agree with you on the stuffiness of the Oscar voters. That’s going to be the second biggest hurdle for Jen, I think. I think the biggest will be the girl from Zero Dark Thirty. Everybody’s talking big about her. Then again, I’m not much of a showbiz expert so who knows. We’re all rooting for you Jen! I might be a little biased, but after seeing SLP I can honestly not believe the award should go to someone else.

If they wanted someone “dignified” try wouldn’t of chosen a 9 year old nominee for best actress? Or given one to a little kid (See Anna Paquin). I actually think Jennifer has a great shot of winning because the contest is basically between her and Jessica Chastain and Zero Dark Thirty has been getting a lot of controversy around it lately with the CIA and the academy won’t deal with controversy. I think the academy is trying to bring in a younger crowd with Jennifer. Honestly, if they wanted dignified, they wouldn’t of ever nominated Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthey, or let Seth Macfarlane host. LOL I’ve taken two filmmaking course and most of it has to do with the academy. Another thing is Harvey Weinstein (producer of SLP) got the movie many nominations because he know how to play with the voters decisions A LOT. If you don’t Bieber me look at past winners.

Jessica Chastain is not THE favorite, actually. Jennifer is the frontrunner with her for the Oscar… As far as critic’s prizes – Chastain and Lawrence are on pretty EQUAL footing – each winning about 12 each so far.
“Acting is stupid” = no incidence on the race. Joaquin Phoenix calls the Oscars “Bullshit” and he is nominated.

@Courtney It sounds like you may have a better handle on how the academy works than I do – most of my direct information about how Hollywood works comes from a friend who makes a living writing screen plays and is not a member of the academy. I hope you are right. I must admit I’m not as pessimistic as I was a few days ago and from what I have read the Weinstein factor is a powerful one in Jennifer’s favor.
