Toby Jones: Catching Fire Will Bring “A Whole Different Visual Sense”

MTV’s Josh Horowitz caught up with Toby Jones at the Golden Globes last night, and took a moment to chat with him about Catching Fire. When asked how different things are now that the franchise has changed directors from Gary Ross to Francis Lawrence, Toby gives us some hints about what’s to come in the first Hunger Games sequel:

”It’s a very different rhythm he works at. A whole different visual sense that people will be excited about,” Jones told MTV. “There’s a whole different way of showing the film that I can’t really talk about. There’s a very interesting way that they’re going to dramatize the Games themselves.”

Jones also talks about his reason to pursue the role of Claudius Templesmith even though it’s so small, having the chance to work more directly with Jennifer Lawrence in Serena, and his possible appearance in the Captain America sequel.

The actor also told AP that Catching Fire is “obviously bigger and a different kind of film this time, more centered on the games themselves.”

What do you think this “different visual sense” might involve? Are you looking forward to Catching Fire being different from the first film? Be sure to let us know in a comment!

I’m a huge fan of Toby Jones, primarily his work in HG, Captain America, and Amazing Grace. For him to say what he just did excites me a lot about Catching Fire.

I’m excited for the different “visual sense”! I just hope he does not screw it, because I believe he’s signed on for all the movies now…
Personally, I think he will do great! I heard before that he(Francis) said, “Not everything has to be grey..”, I agree! I have a good trust in him! :)

“I’m there because my kids love the book. There’s no huge revelation about my character. My kids are happy that I’m in the film. It means they get to go touch the hem of Jennifer Lawrence’s garment. That’s why I’m there!”

^ That’s so cute! Either way, I’m sure it can’t hurt his career to be part of a successful film franchise. :)

I don’t really get why the CF would be any more focused on the Games than HG was. I mean I think that the games sections in both books are about equal. I’m much more optimistic about Lawrence’s vision vs. Ross. Ross’s previous movies failed to grab me ie Pleasantville and Seabiscuit emotionally as did the HG. But Lawrence’s films seem more organic in an emotional sense.

This Toby Jones guy seems so sweet lol. He must make a great dad.

Not sure exactly what Toby Jones is getting at, but I do know all the arena scenes will be shot in IMAX. I also get a feeling that the shaky-cam technique will NOT be coming back for the CF movie.

I reckon Lawrence will make some of the games from the point of view of the spectators – like what they’d see on the T.V screen, such as a ‘DAY 4′ in the corner or something, to make it more like how the citizens of Panem would see the Games!i!i!i!i ^_^
Makes me more excited now!!!! ^_^

@Bethany I was thinking the same.

That’s where Gary dropped the ball for me. One of the main points behind the Games is that its a sick TV show. Other than Gale’s reaction to Peeta/Katniss kissing and D11′s reaction to Rue’s death, you really didn’t get the feel that it was. Some of the scenes should have been viewed from a TV lens or he could have thrown in a “LIVE” image in the corner of the screen every now and then.

From reading the books, I get the impression that the Hunger Games are televised the way we, today, televise the Olympics. Gary should have showed it like that.
