Sam-Claflin

In his first full interview since landing the part of Finnick Odair in Catching Fire, actor Sam Claflin talked with Teen Vogue about landing the part of the Hunger Games fan favorite and confirms that they did film him carrying Lynn Cohen (Mags) around while filming Arena scenes in Hawaii.

TV: Do you like your blonde hair?
SC: It’s definitely taking some getting used to. I have a tan and a six-pack now after four months of hard work. I feel slowly but surely like I am Finnick Odair.
TV: Your training sounds intense!
SC: From the moment I set foot in Atlanta, they had me at the gym, working out twice a day. And then stunt training, it’s nonstop. To be fair, I spend a lot of the film carrying an old lady on my back, as Finnick carries Mags for the majority of the arena scenes. I feel like every day of filming is a workout, running around Hawaii with little old Lynn Cohen on my back. As for my diet, I think I’ve eaten more chickens than there are in the world. [Laughs] I would eat chicken and asparagus for lunch and dinner, and for breakfast I’d have an omelet and oatmeal. And I had that every day for four months. I’ve talked to my friends and said, “Oh my God, I’m so depressed, I just want a burger.” And they’re like, “You don’t know how lucky you are to be doing what you are doing.”

oh my god, i’d rather have an average body on Finnick than knowing he had to suffer through that diet.. i’m thinking back to my wedding diet and you really can get depressed when you have no flexibility like that. and for four months! poor guy.

so he has truly earned my respect on another level.

The dieting sounds horrific. But glad to hear that it payed off. At least he’s in good physical shape now xD for his health more than for his role.

Well atleast everyone knows he talk the physical attributes just as seriously as the emotinal ones. I think he is going to portray Finnick very well. Going to be exciting seeing him carry Mags around the arena <3. I would like to hear from Malone about her role/experiences soon!

Lol, yeah guys, where in the world is Malone? Are they keeping her character a secret or something? Or is she just good at hiding from the press?

well, i guess this more or less confirms our previous speculation that the fog would be poisonous but not necessarily corrosive.

“I wanted to play Katniss, but they refused.” — LOL. guess that’s another thing he and josh have in common. :D i think my favorite part of this interview is just hearing him speak about josh and jen, and all the hijinks they get up to on set… i’m already getting that “big happy family” feel from them and i love that, because that’s definitely something that stuck with me from the cast of the first movie and i’m very glad it’s happening again.

but i also like his more serious comments, as well. the complexities of finnick’s peresonality and his relationship with katniss are something very important to the role. and that bit about how he’s an actor because he’ll never be able to be perfect is pretty deep yet makes a lot of sense to me. good interview, and also a good introduction for those hunger games fans who don’t know much about him as an actor.

They call that “blonde” hair? His hair doesn’t look blonde in any of the pictures or videos, and Finnick is not supposed to be blond, but “bronze-haired”. His current hair color looks reddish.

true that it doesn’t look blond (at least it doesn’t to me), but from experience i know in order to get reddish hair from really dark hair, you have to use a blond dye with orange-y undertones. i’m gonna guess the color they used on him is still labeled as a shade of blond. most of the lighter hair colors do, even though they’re sometimes more brownish or coppery.

it’s not really incorrect, but barely by a technicality.

Ivana, if you read the original article, it’s actually Sam who states that his hair was dyed blonde. Just before the interviewer asks “did you like your blonde hair”, he said: “I didn’t know what it was for before I went in, and I hadn’t read the books. Looking at the page with a character named Finnick, I was like, Who the heck is Finnick? And then I saw Katniss on the page, and I was like, Ahh, OK, maybe this is The Hunger Games. Then they decided they would dye my hair blonde, and presto, there’s your Finnick Odair!”

I guess Sam isn’t a hair-color expert, and the interviewer just went along with what Sam himself said.

As for the rest of the interview, it was pretty fun, I can see how he and Josh got along, they both seem to have that self-deprecating sense of humor. ;) This makes me look forward to their interactions not just in CF, but in MJ as well.

Ironically Sam Claflin made the most coherent remark of all that has been said about Catching Fire so far: “Finnick isn’t Peeta or Katniss” – THANK YOU SAM! In other words: Finnick is not as important as Peeta! Apparently this is what Lionsgate and Fracis Lawrence didn’t realize until now! This lack of information or publicity for Peeta/Josh makes no sense!

Lionsgate and Francis Lawrence didn’t make Teen Vogue or any other magazine do an interview with Sam.

I didn’t say anything about Teen Vogue interviewing Sam Claflin! They should interview whoever they want. I just found it interesting that Sam was the one saying the obvius: Peeta is more important than Finnick! And since Peeta is more important than Finnick (and Gale), Lionsgate and Francis Lawrence should be more concerned with Peeta than they appear to be (after all Francis Lawrence spoke just about Katniss and Gale in two different interviews and Lionsgate is misleadingly selling Finnick as some sort of leading man)…

I don’t get how Lionsgate is “selling” Finnick as a leading man? How have they done that? All that Lawrence has said about Finnick was about his casting, which makes sense since it was the biggest hype and controversy of casting Catching Fire. And if they did not talk about casting Finnick, they would have to talk about casting Johanna or some other new character, not casting Peeta, which is a news old two years. Or do you think that Lionsgate tells Entertainment Weekly what and who to put on their cover? Magazines decide that for themselves. When Lionsgate starts releasing posters, trailers and teasers, then you can talk about who they are “selling” in what capacity.

And Lawrence spoke about one and the same thing in both interviews, that he liked how they did one specific scene with Katniss and Gale. He’s not allowed to?

I’m pretty sure EW’s article (and cover) is a direct result of Lionsgate’s PR “influence”. That’s how these things work.

And yes, I do think it’s weird that the director mentioned TWICE “Gale-Katniss” and didn’t even mentioned Peeta/Josh, who IS the leading male and also Katniss’s real deal in romance.

Sorry, but IMO the lack of information or publicity for Peeta/Josh by now is at least weird.

To be fair to Luna, LG DID choose which film stills to release to EW, so I do see the EW article as closer to an “official” promo than Teen Vogue choosing to interview Sam Claflin. But note that those photos included (1) Katniss and Peeta, (2) Katniss and Finnick, (3) Gale with some faceless Peacekeepers, and (4) a candid shot of Jen, Liam, and Francis. Seemed pretty balanced to me.

Also, there is a big difference between “what is emphasized in pre-movie marketing” and “what is actually in the movie”. The pre-movie marketing and publicity for the THG movie, emphasized Gale and the “love triangle” a lot more than the movie did.

However, I don’t rank articles in magazines like Teen Vogue to be equivalent to official LG publicity. And why does no one ever complain about the literally DOZENS of magazine cover stories that have been released so far that feature Jennifer Lawrence? Many of which focus on her role in “Silver Linings Playbook”, and barely mention THG?

But we really want to know…..does Finnick kiss Peeta and if yes …how many takes to get it just right? LOL
