Watch the latest Hunger Games short by Mainstay Productions called “The Hanging Tree” following a young Katniss and her father in the woods outside District 12. Be sure to follow them on Facebook!
The script was written by our good friend Shylah over at Down with the Capitol. Our compliments to Shylah, John Lyde, the actors, and everyone at Mainstay on a job well done!
Okay so I had to post it before I could watch it and WOW! Everything looks better! The music was amazing and loved Bailee. Made me tear up. ;(

This is what I expected to see at the beggining of the THG movie (probably not as long, though).
Katniss and her father – Katniss learning how to hunt and learning what mockingjays are – Katniss losing her father – Mrs Everdeen being clinically depressed and finally Katniss being saved by Peeta as kids and then meeting Gale ‘Did you say Catnip?’ (probably 25 minutes total?)
AND then a ’5 years later…’ kind of thing showing what they showed in the movie
It would have made a great way to meet her and her story and why she is able to pull off being the winner of THG 74th and eventually the Mockingjay… oh well!
The valley song Katniss sings for the mockingjays is actually a real song, but she doesn’t sing the real tune to it. I like the new tune, but I think that if she was to sing a real song, she should have sung the real tune of it.
This.. was insanely well done. The acting was marvelous, and the guy was a really good singer.

This is amazing! Both actors are incredible, plus the screenplay, plus the director.

When she starts singing the valley song I was thinking: that’s how a little boy called Peeta fell in love…
I was thinking about haw the mockingjays stop to listen to the both of them, and that led to Peeta talking about that.
It was so good! They did to do more background stories.like Peeta and Katniss. Or gale and Katniss
in my opinion, cinematography and music were fantastic. the father’s acting was pretty bad.
I think that the Hanging Tree should be a bit slower in and in a minor key. For the most part he sang it slowly but every once in a while he would sing a few eighth notes and get higher pitch and I feel that this is a sad and mysterious song so it should sound sad and mysterious.
That said, I liked this video and think that they should do more little background stories like this.
I’m a musician and I can tell you that the song was written in a minor key (probably in a minor mode, actually). Whether or not something is fast or slow or sung high or sung low has nothing to do with whether it is minor or major.
I thought the song was fantastic – haunting, compelling, everything that would stick in a young girl’s mind. And the acting and writing throughout was absolutely top notch!
MainStayPro actually didn’t come up with the song’s melody. It’s from Adriana Figueroa, who’s version is actually, without a doubt, my favorite of The Hanging Tree. Her voice is absolutely stunning. MainStay just made the song a little slower in this video.

When I read The Hanging Tree song for the first time, and still don’t know how that song will be, I feel chills.
Like, this song has very sad mysterious feeling.
After watching this, it still gives me chills, as always.
it was so good. I loved it.
They should make a short like this for when Katniss and Gale meet and how they start helping each other. Or even better a series like they did with Finnick and Annie but with Katniss. It could start with katniss’s dad dieing and her family slowly starving to death, to Peeta saving her life and then meeting Gale.
ikr maybe even a series about district 13 or the dark ages and the war

In order to do full service to the books, a full tv series akin to this would be required. Including all the back stories and thoughts going on in Katniss’ head, side- stories of other characters from the districts, and past winners/ mentors it would be epic to undertake.
The official movie did such a good job, but there’s only so much you can fit into 2 and 1/2 hrs.
the dad doesn’t know it is illegal to sing the song until katniss’s mom tells him when he comes back from the woods with katniss & I think they also take prim Into the woods I think, it was a good video I liked it though (:
